Adele’s “Hello”

Before going into the actual post, I must confess that I have totally fallen in love with Adele’s new musical project.

I have been listening to her new CD “25” and must say that I’m totally taken by it.

I know I’m not the only one because everything seems to be Adele nowadays. She was on a visit to New York City and hit all the major talk and late night shows. She appeared on Jimmy Fallon and was hilarious.

She also filmed a TV special for NBS which will air December 14 at 10 PM. One show that I will surely record and watch at my leisure.

Ellen DeGeneres made a parody of her “Hello” which was quite entertaining. Heather Rooney, an incredible illustrator, painted a colored pencil picture of Adele.

I found this video, a rendition of Adele’s “Hello” by the Southern University Marching Band and the Dancing Dolls.

Southern University Marching Band’s Outstanding Cover

Southern University, “of Baton Rouge, not New Orleans: this distinction is incredibly important” as noted by USA Today, takes on Grambling State in the Bayou Classic every year, this year having been the 42nd face-off between the teams, according to the Bayou Classic’s website.

Southern University competed in the Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands on November 27, 2015, and they came to impress. With a stacked horns section, the band covered Adele’s chart-topping single ‘Hello’ with unparalleled power as the Dancing Dolls accompanied the band from the field.

Record-breaking ‘Hello,’ which is currently one of the most popular songs in the country (it has been at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 list for five weeks now) was the perfect card for Southern University’s marching band to play.

While Adele’s power-ballad might not be the first thing you think of when considering marching band music, the orchestration of the original track leaves plenty of room for the song to be adapted to a full marching band arrangement. The resulting harmonies are out of this world — just make sure you don’t have the volume turned up too high, these horn players mean serious business.

The resilience of kids is a fact well know.

In the time frame of a couple of weeks, Zaid has gone from a scared, confused child, running away from his war torn country.

Matters made worse by running from the authorities and having that heartless, bigoted woman trip his dad and falling.

I think that his young mind has been able to put this away as a nightmare and now he’s experiencing only good things.

I wish this family the best.

I also wish the same to the many other refugees who are on the run.

The dream of a seven-year-old Syrian boy, who along with his father was tripped up by a Hungarian camerawoman while being pursued by police, has come true. He met his football idol Ronaldo.

Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo decided to make it up for Zaid Mohsen and his father Osama Abdul who were unlucky enough to meet a Hungarian camerawoman who “panicked” and tripped up the two while they fled the police from a refugee camp earlier this month.

Ronaldo invited the boy, his father and his older brother Mohammad, 18, to a Real Madrid game against Granada this weekend. The little one was even given the honor to walk the football pitch next to the famous football player as his personal mascot.

At some point the boy apparently felt so excited that he even tried to perform Ronaldo’s well-known celebration move, almost managing it.

“Little Zaid got to know his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom he was photographed on the pitch,” says a statement on Real Madrid official website accompanied with a photo of the family proudly standing along with Ronaldo and other members of the team.

“The father of the Syrian family, who was tripped by a Hungarian journalist, and his sons met (coach) Rafael Benítez, the technical staff and the squad minutes before the final training session ahead of the game against Granada.”

Baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente became the first Latin American player to collect 3,000 career hits before his death in a plane crash.

~SYNOPSIS~

Born Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker on August 18, 1934, Clemente played with the Brooklyn Dodgers‘ minor league team before making his major league debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955. He led the National League in batting four times during the 1960s, and starred in the 1971 World Series.

He died in a plane crash to deliver goods to Nicaragua in 1972.

~BASEBALL CAREER~

Baseball player Roberto Clemente was born on August 18, 1934, in Carolina, Puerto Rico. The son of a sugarcane worker, Roberto Clemente began his professional baseball career just after finishing high school.

He signed a deal with the Brooklyn Dodgers and played with their minor league team, the Montreal Royals, for a season. The next year he went to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates and made his major league debut in 1955.

As the decade progressed, Clemente established himself as one of the top all-around players in baseball. He won three more batting titles, and twice led the league in hits. Furthermore, he boasted one of the most fearsome arms ever witnessed in the sport, consistently unleashing powerful throws from his post in right field. He enjoyed perhaps his finest season in 1966, batting .317 with a career-best 29 homers and 119 RBIs to win the NL Most Valuable Player Award.

~REPUTATION AND DEATH~

Off the field, Clemente was described as a quiet gentleman.

He was proud of his Puerto Rican heritage and stood up for minority rights. Clemente married Vera Zabala in 1963, and they had three sons.

Renowned for his humanitarian work, he died in a plane crash on December 31, 1972, en route to bringing much needed supplies to survivors of an earthquake in Nicaragua. The next year he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

He became the first Latino inducted into the Hall.

Caitlyn Jenner Gives Poignant Speech at ESPYS

Jenner was this year’s recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, named for the African American tennis star who died of AIDS in 1993.

‘Trans People Deserve Your Respect’

Caitlyn Jenner accepted her first formal award on Wednesday since announcing her transition, receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS and giving an emotional speech in the process.

“The real truth is that before just a few months ago, I had never met anybody else who was trans,” she said. “Now as you saw, I dealt with my situation on my own, in private. It’s been eye-opening, inspiring, but also frightening.”

She went on to talk about trans youth, mentioning late trans teenagers Mercedes Williamson and Sam Taub.

“They’re getting bullied,” Jenner said of trans youth. “They’re getting beaten up. They’re getting murdered.

And they’re committing suicide.”

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS ISSUE

I must truthfully say that I didn’t think that I would be looking for information, reviewing and listening to Jenner’s acceptance speech at the ESPY’s.

I remember, back in 1976, when Jenner was the darling of the media because of his incredible feat in the Olympics and winning the Olympic decathlon men’s event champion.

Throughout all of her journey, even before she announced what she intended to, I never followed her as an American television personality. I did watch the Diane Sawyer interview where Jenner described what he had gone through all his life, her “confusion, her living up to someone she wasn’t’.

It all seemed so phony and fake to me. I wasn’t thrilled like some seemed to be. I wondered what she could bring to the table in the current situation of the trans community, the “T” in LGBTQ. I even thought this may be damaging to the advances that have been made in the acceptance of the LGBTQ community and the monumental decision of SCOTUS in making marriage equality the “law of the land”.

Some of you may be confused, since some may know that I am a proud member of the LGBTQ community, recently married and now recognized as married nationwide, that I’m not offering unconditional support to Jenner.

I watched Caitlyn Jenner’s acceptance speech at the ESPYS last night.  I must say that I’m still somewhat “leery” of her intentions but I must also say that her acceptance speech was powerful, intense, heartwarming and very touching. She’s setting quite an agenda for herself.

For the sake of the LGBTQ community and for Caitlyn Jenner’s sake, I do hope that this is all real, not any kind of publicity stunt or attention seeking action. I don’t think that anyone would go through all of the jeering, abuse, anguish, medical and surgical treatment that she has gone through for publicity’s sake.

I truly got a better glimpse of her and I hope and wish only the best for her at this stage of her life.

Kissing Day aims to make us appreciate a kiss in its own right.   No conventions, no social norms, just a kiss.  Across the globe we embrace the kiss by embracing someone else.

3 Cheers for Abby Wambach and the Kiss Heard Round the World

As the media gleefully reports on the US Women’s National Team‘s incredible 5-2 victory over Japan yesterday in the World Cup final, one news story in particular caught my attention. Upon winning, Abby Wambach did what anyone would do in a moment of triumph: she ran up to her spouse Sarah Huffman for a hug and a kiss. Generally a totally normal occurrence to kiss your spouse, except in this case her spouse is another woman. The moment was heartwarming, and I watched the Vine a few times with a big grin on my face.

But it is a big deal.

It’s a big deal because it’s so rare to see a real moment of love between two married women on TV.

It’s a big deal because 20.3 million Americans tuned in to watch the final (more than the number who watched the average NBA Finals or Stanley Cup Finals game, by the way). It’s a big deal because little kids still cry when they discover that they’re gay. It’s a big deal because our nation just got full marriage equality a mere 10 days ago. It’s a big deal because 39% of the country still opposes marriage equality. It’s a big deal because public reaction to it serves as a benchmark for how far we’ve come.

Can you imagine all the hateful rhetoric that would have been spewed about it if Wambach had had this moment of celebration with her wife 8, 12, 16, etc years ago?

To start the day ….. “DWTS Dance Center”!!

A couple of years ago, Dancing with the Stars tried to inject a little comedy into the dancing competition reality TV show. It created a small set to resemble a sports desk. At the desk sat retired football player Jerry Rice (former DWTS competitor), ESPN journalist and funnyman Kenny Mayne, and DWTS judge Len Goodman. At “Dance Center” they reviewed and delivered light-hearted commentary about the performances of the evening.

Now the funny trio is reuniting on DWTS. The show is reviving “Dance Center” for a special appearance on May 5, 8pm on ABC. It will be Rice’s second appearance on DWTS in the past month. He came back to dance at the 10th anniversary show.

Rumor has it Goodman will soon retire. Is DWTS testing Rice out for Len’s real judging chair? He’d be the first non-professional dancer in a judge’s seat, but Rice did well on the show and is enormously popular with DWTS fans. Rice has said DWTS changed his life.
