Great question …. Night Poem: “Which one are you?”

~~April 9, 2015~~

I think I am all of them.

The night, the moon, the rain and lightning …. all inspire me and comfort me.

There is nothing to be afraid of,
it is only the wind
changing to the east, it is only
your father the thunder
your mother the rain

In this country of water
with its beige moon damp as a mushroom,
its drowned stumps and long birds
that swim, where the moss grows
on all sides of the trees
and your shadow is not your shadow
but your reflection,

your true parents disappear
when the curtain covers your door.

We are the others,
the ones from under the lake
who stand silently beside your bed
with our heads of darkness.
We have come to cover you
with red wool,
with our tears and distant whispers.

You rock in the rain’s arms
the chilly ark of your sleep,
while we wait, your night
father and mother
with our cold hands and dead flashlight,
knowing we are only
the wavering shadows thrown
by one candle, in this echo
you will hear twenty years later.

Full Pink Moon, Full Lunar Eclipse …. April 4, 2015!!

~~April 4, 2015~~

This full Moon heralded the appearance of the moss pink, or wild ground phlox — one of the first spring flowers.

It is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon.

Why Native Americans Named the Moons

The early Native Americans did not record time by using the months of the Julian or Gregorian calendar. Many tribes kept track of time by observing the seasons and lunar months, although there was much variability. For some tribes, the year contained 4 seasons and started at a certain season, such as spring or fall. Others counted 5 seasons to a year. Some tribes defined a year as 12 Moons, while others assigned it 13. Certain tribes that used the lunar calendar added an extra Moon every few years, to keep it in sync with the seasons.

Each tribe that did name the full Moons (and/or lunar months) had its own naming preferences. Some would use 12 names for the year while others might use 5, 6, or 7; also, certain names might change the next year. A full Moon name used by one tribe might differ from one used by another tribe for the same time period, or be the same name but represent a different time period. The name itself was often a description relating to a particular activity/event that usually occurred during that time in their location.

Colonial Americans adopted some of the Native American full Moon names and applied them to their own calendar system (primarily Julian, and later, Gregorian). Since the Gregorian calendar is the system that many in North America use today, that is how we have presented the list of Moon names, as a frame of reference. The Native American names have been listed by the month in the Gregorian calendar to which they are most closely associated.

Native American Full Moon Names and Their Meanings

The Full Moon Names we use in the Almanac come from the Algonquin tribes who lived in regions from New England to Lake Superior. They are the names the Colonial Americans adapted most. Note that each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred.

From my friends up north ….. “Please, STOP”!!

~~March 6, 2015~~

US Winter Forecast: Cold, Snow to Seize Northeast; Wintry Blasts to Slick South

After record-shattering temperatures and high snow totals last winter in the Northeast, a similar theme will continue into the 2014-2015 season.

Cold air will surge into the Northeast in late November, but the brunt of the season will hold off until January and February. The polar vortex, the culprit responsible for several days of below-zero temperatures last year, will slip down into the region from time to time, delivering blasts of arctic air.

“I think, primarily, we’ll see that happening in mid-January into February but again, it’s not going to be the same type of situation as we saw last year, not as persistent,” Expert Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok said.

“The cold of last season was extreme because it was so persistent. We saw readings that we haven’t seen in a long time: 15- to 20-below-zero readings.”

In addition to the cold air, a big snow season could be in the offing. Higher-than-normal snow totals are forecast west of the I-95 corridor.

Groundhog day 2015 …. Only in America indeed!!

~~February 2, 2015~~

Groundhog’s Day (Canadian French: Jour de la Marmotte; Pennsylvania German: Grundsaudaag, Murmeltiertag) is a day celebrated on February 2.

According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will persist for six more weeks.

Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns when that change lasts for an extended period of time (i.e., decades to millions of years). Climate change may refer to a change in average weather conditions, or in the time variation of weather around longer-term average conditions (i.e., more or fewer extreme weather events). Climate change is caused by factors such as biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by Earth, plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions. Certain human activities have also been identified as significant causes of recent climate change, often referred to as “global warming“.

Scientists actively work to understand past and future climate by using observations and theoretical models. A climate record — extending deep into the Earth’s past — has been assembled, and continues to be built up, based on geological evidence from borehole temperature profiles, cores removed from deep accumulations of ice, floral and faunal records, glacial and peri-glacial processes, stable-isotope and other analyses of sediment layers, and records of past sea levels.

More recent data are provided by the instrumental record. General circulation models, based on the physical sciences, are often used in theoretical approaches to match past climate data, make future projections, and link causes and effects in climate change.

Thoughts for today …. #42!!

~~November 20, 2014~~

This is the best explanation I’ve seen about this issue. Easy to understand, in real life terms. Here you have it. Now … what say you? Basically, America is being used … again … for the interests of a “few”. No thought about the “many”.

The owners of Koch Industries, Charles and David Koch, will benefit if President Obama allows the Keystone XL Pipeline to be built. In recent years it has been reported that the Kochs hold up to 2 million acres in Alberta, could earn roughly $100 billion in profits from the project, and have spent more than $50 million on Congress and Think Tanks that heavily push for the pipeline.

Keystone Pipeline passed in Congress …. #NOKXL!!

~~November 15, 2014~~

BREAKING: The House of Representatives just approved the Keystone XL pipeline, which scientists warn will mean “game over” for the planet. If Keystone is built, it is expected to make the Koch brothers $100 billion in profits, making them the wealthiest family in human history. Share to spread their shame!

From a friend

My Concerns are
Many think this OIL is for us. Wrong …. 98% is for export ONLY. While using the middle of our finest land. Many land owners and farmers will HAVE no choice on this and THEY have to do the major clean up if a spill. It clearly states that in the agreement.

So while this OIL is NOT for us? I ask you why we would even consider it? We are messing up our waters, so now we want to possibly destroyed our heartland?
Do home owners and land owners have NO rights?

I am pretty upset about this. I hope president Obama vetos this. Can he?

The “SMART Ride” …. Miami to Key West this weekend!!

~~November 13, 2014~~

History of The SMART Ride

Like many things that change us and the world in some way, it starts with a dream, a vision, and an idea. The SMART Ride (Southern Most AIDS/HIV Ride) is no different. It was born out of a dream to make a real and significant difference in the lives of those infected, affected and at risk for HIV/AIDS.

In 2002, the idea was a welcome change to this kind of fundraising, but met much skepticism about the reality of meeting these goals of 100%. The ride became a reality one year later in November of 2003 with less than 100 riders and about 100 crew, miraculously we raised $169,000 and returned it all to AIDS Service Organizations.

A decade later over $5.3 Million has been distributed throughout Florida making SMART Ride the 2nd largest AIDS bicycle ride in the country and the only one of it’s size to give back 100%.

Our participants come from across the State of Florida from as far south as Key West, as far North as Jacksonville, from Tampa to Palm Beach. Nationally from as far as Hawaii to as close as our neighboring state of Georgia, not to mention Internationally. We attract between 400-500 participants with each event, but we touch thousands more on the road as we travel between cities and towns, and with each donation that is made. Last year, close to 10,000 people donated to our efforts – that’s quite an impact!

Riders and crew range in age from 18 to 73.

~They are involved because~

Some are Positive
Some have lost someone to HIV/AIDS
Some know someone living with HIV/AIDS
Everybody believes it is the right thing to do

The “Miracle of Loveteam, leaves this morning for Miami. We have trained hard, and many months for this day. We will be on the road tomorrow morning, by 6:30 AM and ride 104 miles, to Duck Key. Saturday, we ride 64 miles to Key West. Thank you, to my friends and family, for your prayers, love, and donations.

My friends are there now!!

What makes SMART Ride unique?

The ride is fully supported and designed to allow riders of all degrees of experience to participate. This is a ride not a race. Each participant pays an $95 registration fee and riders commit to raise a minimum of $1,250 in donations. Although that amount to fund raise may seem daunting, we are continually amazed by what we see participants accomplish. The average rider raises over $2,020.

My friends Jean Walburn, Maria Tilita Daugherty and Jenniffer Lugo

The Miracle of Love SMART Ride riders and crew just pulled out for Miami! Best of luck, may the wind be at your back .. .and know I am with you all in spirit. Your dedication, hard work, training, fundraising, and time culminate in one of the most exciting experiences! Thank you for all you’ve done and will do this weekend!
