JOHN WINSTON LENNON

This day, 35 years ago, marks the passing of English singer
and songwriter and former member of The Beatles, John Lennon.
(Born John Winston Lennon; Oct. 9, 1940 – 8 Dec.19, 80)

John Lennon was an English musician who gained worldwide fame as one of the members of the Beatles, for his subsequent solo career, and for his political activism and pacifism.

He was shot by “a deranged American gunman” (I refuse to use his name) in the archway of the building where he lived, The Dakota, in New York City on 8 December 1980.

Dak

Lennon had just returned from Record Plant Studio with his wife, Yoko Ono.

After sustaining four fatal gunshot wounds, Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at Roosevelt Hospital. He was 40 years old.

At the hospital, it was stated that nobody could have lived for more than a few minutes after sustaining such injuries. Shortly after local news stations reported Lennon’s death, crowds gathered at Roosevelt Hospital and in front of the Dakota.

Lennon was cremated on 10 December 1980 at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. The ashes were given to Ono, who chose not to hold a funeral for him.

SILENCE MAKES YOU AN ACCOMPLICE

Where’s our Martin Niemöller?

This graph, presents a poem, which been shared plenty of times in the blogosphere. Please, allow me the opportunity to present it again.

I want to apply it to our present time.

I’ve seen it many times.

Every time it makes me think.

More so now, in view of the ugly turn in the road where American politics seem to be headed.

To me, the bottom line is that if you don’t speak up for others who are somehow persecuted, eventually your turn will come and there will be no one to stand up for your when you are persecuted.

It’s time to stand up and hold your ground.

~MARTIN NIEMOLLER~

Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.

The quotation stems from Niemöller’s lectures during the early postwar period. Different versions of the quotation exist. These can be attributed to the fact that Niemöller spoke extemporaneously and in a number of settings.

Much controversy surrounds the content of the poem as it has been printed in varying forms, referring to diverse groups such as Catholics, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jews, Trade Unionists, or Communists depending upon the version. Nonetheless his point was that Germans – in particular, he believed, the leaders of the Protestant churches – had been complicit through their silence in the Nazi imprisonment, persecution, and murder of millions of people.

First he came for the Mexicans, then he came for the war heroes, then he came for African Americans, then he came for the immigrants, then he came for the Jews, then he came for the “gays” …. now he’s coming for the Muslims. Maybe you can add someone else or he will continue adding groups.

Is anyone going to stand up to him?

Thoughts for today, #294 .… “Advice from a Tree”!!

TreeAd

~~November 28, 2015~~

ADVICE FROM A TREE

Dear Friend,
Stand Tall and Proud
Sink your roots deeply into the Earth
Reflect the light of a greater source
Think long term
Go out on a limb
Remember your place among all living beings
Embrace with joy the changing seasons
For each yields its own abundance
The Energy and Birth of Spring
The Growth and Contentment of Summer
The Wisdom to let go of leaves in the Fall
The Rest and Quiet Renewal of Winter
Feel the wind and the sun
And delight in their presence
Look up at the moon that shines down upon you
And the mystery of the stars at night.
Seek nourishment from the good things in life
Simple pleasures
Earth, fresh air, light
Be content with your natural beauty
Drink plenty of water
Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes
Be flexible
Remember your roots
Enjoy the view!

~~November 20, 2015~~

WHAT IS A BOOK?

A book is pages, pictures and words
A book is animals, people and birds
A book is stories of queens and kings
Poems and songs-so many things!
Curled in a corner where I can hide
With a book I can journey far and wide
Though it’s only paper from end to end
A book is a very special friend.

Something to think about …. “Innocence Lost …. Sad”!!

~~November 19, 2015~

WAR CHILD

Little girl, trying to sleep in your bed
don’t listen to the sound of the bombs nearby
just close your eyes and try not to cry
and let your brother sing you a lullaby.
And don’t listen to the noise of the guns
as the bullets flash by your door, don’t cry
just think of the peace found in sleep
while your brother sings you a lullaby.
Little girl, as you sleep in your bed
when you dream, try not to dream of the day
when soldiers came with their guns
and took your father away.
And when you wake up to a new day
looking for the sun, through the dust and smoke
try to find some hope in that terrible place
as you and your brother strive to cope.
Little girl, war is the world of grown ups
and there is nothing you can do
even if you tell them of your fear and sorrow
no one will listen to you.
But when the war is over and done
and you no longer hear an exploding shell
maybe your young life will be a better place
more like Heaven and less like Hell.

Sam and the Boneless Man …. Dennis John Ferado!!

DanceRed

~~February 16, 2015~~

SAM AND THE BONELESS MAN

They walked in the place he had a smile on his face
Dressed kind of chummy with his redheaded honey
Strolling ‘cross the room in loose harmony
Holding his arm she had a lock on charm
His hair was slicked back all shiny blue/black and
They sat at the table by the potted palm
They got up to dance and she tossed her head back
He was a boneless man moved like a rubber band
Across the dance floor their steps were true and sure
I heard him call her Sam she said, oh mi amore
As she danced and she danced with the boneless man

He said you can dance among the seven skies
Since seeing is tied to more than the eyes
You can balance on a tightrope that’s who you are
I am just a prancer you are the star
Wise man knows when to step and when to glide
Come on Samantha lets put the world in a jar
Love is all we need to fly to the sky
He was a boneless man moved like a rubber band
Across the dance floor their steps were true and sure
I heard him call her Sam she said, oh mi amore
As she danced and she danced with the boneless man

Melodies filled her soul the moment of her birth
Now the music of her spirit keeps her on the run
She was Sadie Thompson she was Rita Hayworth
Beneath the turning ceiling fans they spun
Anything but loud there was a stunned hushed span
Everybody stared red dress flying everywhere
Tripping the light fantastic with the boneless man
He was a boneless man moved like a rubber band
Across the dance floor their steps were true and sure
I heard him call her Sam she said, oh mi amore
As she danced and she danced with the boneless man

Google Doodle for today …. Langston Hughes 113th birthday!!

Langst

~~February 1, 2015~~

Google has marked what would have been the 113th birthday of pioneering African-American jazz poet and social activist, Langston Mercer Hughes with a Doodle on its homepage.

The animated sequence shows a caricature of Hughes at his typewriter as lines from his poem “I Dream a World” appear.

Lan5

James Mercer Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967) was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist.

He was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form called jazz poetry. Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. He famously wrote about the period that “the negro was in vogue”, which was later paraphrased as “when Harlem was in vogue”.

BlackBor

~Ancestry and childhood~

Both of Hughes’ paternal great-grandmothers were African-American and both of his paternal great-grandfathers were white slave owners of Kentucky. According to Hughes, one of these men was Sam Clay, a Scottish-American whiskey distiller of Henry County and supposedly a relative of Henry Clay, and the other was Silas Cushenberry a Jewish-American slave trader of Clark County. Hughes’s maternal grandmother Mary Patterson was of African-American, French, English and Native American descent. One of the first women to attend Oberlin College, she first married Lewis Sheridan Leary, also of mixed race. Lewis Sheridan Leary subsequently joined John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry in 1859 and died from his wounds.

In 1869 the widow Mary Patterson Leary married again, into the elite, politically active Langston family. Her second husband was Charles Henry Langston, of African-American, Native American, and Euro-American ancestry. He and his younger brother John Mercer Langston worked for the abolitionist cause and helped lead the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society in 1858. Charles Langston later moved to Kansas, where he was active as an educator and activist for voting and rights for African Americans. Charles and Mary’s daughter Caroline was the mother of Langston Hughes.

BlackBor

~Death~

On May 22, 1967, Hughes died from complications after abdominal surgery, related to prostate cancer, at the age of 65. His ashes are interred beneath a floor medallion in the middle of the foyer in the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. It is the entrance to an auditorium named for him. The design on the floor is an African cosmogram entitled Rivers.

The title is taken from his poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers“. Within the center of the cosmogram is the line: “My soul has grown deep like the rivers“.

If We Could Bring You Back Again

If we could bring you back again,
For one more hour or day,
We’d express all our unspoken love;
We’d have countless things to say.

If we could bring you back again,
We’d say we treasured you,
And that your presence in our lives
Meant more than we ever knew.

If we could bring you back again,
To tell you what we should,
You’d know how much we miss you now,
And if we could, we would.

~IN HER OWN WORDS~

IOTD” is image of the day, a concept I came up with. I teach visual meditative therapy – or in easy terms – a mini mental holiday. For some people it is very difficult for them to get their image right. I post an image a day for people to use in their mini mental vacay. Some are serious, some are silly, and some are just beautiful!”
