Movie Time …. “Unbroken”!!

~~December 29, 2014~~

Some of you may know that I worked as a physician with the Veterans Administration for almost 28 years. I worked with patients from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the current conflicts. All deserve their merit but the POW’s are way beyond deserving.

Watching this movie, reminded me of all those that I took care of.

A great movie to watch. Excellent directing job by Angelina Jolie and superb acting job by Jack O’Connell, the British actor who played Zamperini.

Louis Silvie “Louie” Zamperini (January 26, 1917 – July 2, 2014) was an American World War II prisoner of war survivor, Christian inspirational speaker, and Olympic distance runner. Zamperini is the subject of two biographies and the 2014 film Unbroken.

The film opens showing Louis “Louie” Zamperini flying as a bombardier of a United States Army Air Forces B-24 Liberator bomber, during an April 1943 bombing mission against the Japanese-held island of Nauru. The plane is badly damaged in combat, with a number of the crew injured. The brakes of the plane are shot away, but the pilot manages to bring it to a stop at the end of the runway thanks to a lucky flat tire.

The movie then flashes back to Louie’s childhood as a young Italian immigrant boy. Louie was a trouble maker, stealing, drinking liquor, and smoking, to the disappointment of his parents. He was picked on by other kids for being Italian.

One day Louie was caught looking up womens’ dresses from under bleachers during a track meet, and runs. His brother Peter sees how fast he runs, and decides to train him to be a runner. Peter trains Louie everyday to become his best. As he grows, Louie becomes an accomplished distance runner, earning him the nickname “The Torrance Tornado” (he grew up in Torrance, California), and eventually qualifies for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Louie does surprisingly well in the Olympics, coming in 8th and setting a record for speed in the final lap in the the 5000 metres race, running it in 56 seconds.

Returning to the present day, Louie and the surviving crew of the previous mission, along with replacement crewmen, are sent on a search and rescue mission with a plane that had previously been used for spare parts. Louie does not believe that the plane is airworthy, but the others tell him that it is suitable.

During the mission, however, both of the plane’s left engines fail, causing them to crash in the ocean. Louie and two other survivors, Mac and Phil, survive and live on two floating safety rafts. After three days a search plane flies over them but does not see them and they are unable to get its attention.

After 45 days, they get the attention of a Japanese plane which strafes the floating rafts but misses them. On the 46th day Mac dies, leaving only Louie and Phil.

On the 47th day, Japanese forces capture Louie and Phil and they become prisoners of war. The Japanese force Louie and Phil to tell them what they know about the Allies. Louie tells them that he doesn’t know anything because he’s been stuck on the boat for more than a month. Their captors do not believe them and send Louie and Phil to a POW. camp.

Louie and Phil are separated into different camps. At the camp in Tokyo where Zamperini is sent, he meets a Japanese guard, Mutsuhiro “Bird” Watanabe, who treats him very cruelly, in part because of Zamperini’s status as a former Olympian. “Bird” is especially tough on Louie out of jealousy, beating him often. Louie is given the opportunity to broadcast a message home saying that he is alive. When he refuses to broadcast a second message that would be anti American he is sent back to camp where Watanabe has all the other prisoners punch him for not showing respect.

After two years, Watanabe gets a promotion and is taken out of the camp where Zamperini is being held. Louie is grateful that he is gone. One night the camp is damaged when Tokyo is bombed by American forces. Louie and the other internees are forced to move to another camp where Zamperini discovers that Watanabe is in charge. The prisoners are now put to work loading coal barges. One day after Louis sprains his ankle and is unable to work, “Bird” tells him to lift a giant piece of wood. Louis successfully lifts and holds the wood, angering Watanabe leading to a harsh beating.

At the end of the war, Zamperini and the other prisoners in the camp are set free to return to their homes.

Back home in America, he kisses the ground and hugs his family.

At the end of the film there is a slideshow showing what happened after the war. Louis was married and had two children. Phil survived and eventually married his sweetheart. Mutsuhiro “Bird” Watanabe went into hiding for several years and successfully evaded prosecution in spite of being listed in the top 40 most-wanted Japanese war criminals by General Douglas MacArthur. Louie forgave his war-time captors and met with many of them. Watanabe, however, refused to meet with Zamperini.

In January of 1998, Louis had an opportunity to revisit his time as an Olympian when he ran a leg of the Olympic Torch relay for the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. He was four days short of his 81st birthday. The site for his leg of the relay was not far from one of the POW camps where he was held during the war.

Zamperini died on July 2, 2014 at age 97.

Watanabe was known as “The Bird,” and had gone into hiding during the American occupation of Japan. However, in 1952, the United States granted amnesty to Japanese war criminals, after which he emerged to become a businessman.

He died in April 2003.

To start the day …. “World Peace Day”!!

~~November 17, 2014~~

World Peace Day is celebrated on November 17, 2014

This is a “state” that should be permanent. Every one talks about “peace”. We all wish that there was peace in our world. We wish that smaller units like family units and communities be peaceful. This would translate exponentially to countries and the world.

PEACE should have one day … PEACE should “be” every day.

Anyone, anywhere can celebrate Peace Day. Millions of people in all countries do. It can be as simple as lighting a candle at noon, or just sitting in silent meditation. Or it can involve getting your friends, family, organization, community or government engaged in a large event. The impact of millions of people in all parts of the world, coming together for one day of peace, is immense. Peace Day is also a Day of Ceasefire – personal or political.

Take this opportunity to make peace in your own relationships as well as impact the larger conflicts of our time. Imagine what a whole Day of Peace would mean to humankind.

“As it appears in … “

What is PEACE?

Peace is an occurrence of harmony characterized by lack of violence, conflict behaviors and the freedom from fear of violence. Commonly understood as the absence of hostility and retribution, peace also suggests sincere attempts at reconciliation, the existence of healthy or newly healed interpersonal or international relationships, prosperity in matters of social or economic welfare, the establishment of equality, and a working political order that serves the true interests of all.

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day … October 15, 2014!!

~~October 16, 2014~~

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

…. a day of remembrance for pregnancy loss and infant death, which includes but is not limited to miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS, or the death of a newborn. It is observed annually in the United States and Canada and, in recent years, in the United Kingdom and in the Australian States of Western Australia and New South Wales, in Italy on behalf of a charity named Piccoli Angeli on October 15.

The day is observed with remembrance ceremonies and candle-lighting vigils, concluding with the International Wave of Light, a worldwide lighting of candles at 7:00 PM.

This post is dedicated to the Harris Family who lost their baby girl DeLainey too soon. She participated in the International Wave of Light in honor of her daughter.

In her own words ….

“The ceremony was very nice. Mommy didn’t get to hear them say your name cause your brother was busy singing happy birthday to you.

But it was nice to be there and light candles for you and all the other little babies that were taken too soon. I never would have thought this would be our life and I still can’t believe it is. I want nothing but to have you here with us. I wish I could make it happen but I am left with the fact that will never happen.

Our lives will forever be changed because you aren’t longer here. I will never understand it and I will live with the pain for the rest of my life. But having you I would never have changed you knew nothing but love and for that I can have a small amount if peace. You never had to suffer or feel the pain of this ugly world. You knew my love, my warmth, my heartbeat and my arms. I held you your entire life. I just wish it would have been different. I love and miss you like crazy and you will always be my baby.”

Total Lunar Eclipse …. October 8, 2014!!

~~October 7, 2014~~

The Moon does not have its own light, but shines because its surface reflects the Sun’s rays. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth’s shadow blocks all the Sun’s light from directly reaching the Moon’s surface.

~The Earth’s shadow can be divided into 3 parts~

Penumbra – the outer part.
Umbra – darker, central part.
Antumbra – a partly shaded area beyond the umbra.

What happens if the Moon passes through the Earth’s penumbra?

~Sun, Earth and Moon aligned~

For a lunar eclipse to occur, the Sun, Earth and Moon must be roughly aligned in a straight line. If the Sun, Earth and Moon do not align, the Earth cannot cast a shadow on the Moon’s surface and an eclipse cannot happen.

When the Sun, Earth and Moon are not perfectly aligned, only the outer part of the Earth’s shadow covers the Moon. Such an eclipse is called a penumbral lunar eclipse. In a total lunar eclipse, the Earth’s umbra completely covers the Moon.

Fun fact: The Earth’s umbra is about 870,000 miles (1.4 million km) wide.

“As it appears in …. “

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra (shadow). This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned (in “syzygy“) exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, a lunar eclipse can only occur the night of a full moon. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon’s location relative to its orbital nodes.

Unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be viewed from a certain relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of the Earth. A lunar eclipse lasts for a few hours, whereas a total solar eclipse lasts for only a few minutes at any given place, due to the smaller size of the moon’s shadow. Also unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to view without any eye protection or special precautions, as they are dimmer than the full moon.

~~Red Moon~~

Even though the Earth completely blocks sunlight from directly reaching the surface of the Moon, the Moon is still visible to the naked eye during a total solar eclipse. This is because the Earth’s atmosphere refracts sunlight and indirectly lights up the Moon’s surface.

~What is Earthshine?~

The Earth’s atmosphere, removes or blocks parts of the sunlight’s spectrum leaving only the longer wavelengths. Because of this, a totally eclipsed Moon usually looks red.

~~Pre-Halloween Lunar Eclipse Will Turn The Moon Blood Red~~

Blood Moon of October 8th 2014

Stargazer Nation™

~~Published on Oct 6, 2014~~

The Blood Moon is back and it’s bigger and better than before!

A pre-Halloween total lunar eclipse on Wednesday, October 8, will turn the moon a burnt reddish orange for about an hour. Skywatchers across much of the world will have the chance to witness the second Blood Moon this year, reports

On the East Coast of the United States, the full eclipse will start at 6:25 am EDT, but people on the West Coast of the US will have an even better chance of seeing the rusty glow of the moon during the total eclipse.

The event will occur between 3:25 am PDT and 4:24 am PDT Wednesday. Observers in Australia and countries along the Pacific Ocean will also have the chance to witness the eclipse.

“It promises to be a stunning sight, even from the most light-polluted cities,” NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak said in a statement. “I encourage everyone, especially families with curious children, to go out and enjoy the event.”

The next total eclipse in the series will occur on April 4, 2015, and the fourth eclipse will rise on 28 September, 2015.

During total lunar eclipses, the moon passes into Earth’s shadow, causing the planet to darken the face of the moon.

Instead of making the moon go completely dark, the moon shines with a rosy hue during a total eclipse because it reflects light from the sun coming through Earth’s atmosphere.

World Animal Day …. October 4, 2014!!

~~October 4, 2014~~

World Animal Day was started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. October 4 was chosen as World Animal Day as it is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

Since then, World Animal Day has become a day for remembering and paying tribute to all animals and the people who love and respect them. It’s celebrated in different ways in every country, with no regard to nationality, religion, faith or political ideology.

Many people feel drawn to advocate for animals because even though they can feel pain and suffer just as we do, they do not have a way to advocate for their own welfare. In fact, animals are viewed by many as nothing more than property to be treated however the owner wishes. This view has created an inhumane situation for billions of animals that share our world.

~many of the world’s 60 billion farm animals are not treated humanely~

~80% of the world’s 1 billion cats and dogs are stray or neglected~

~millions of wild animals are killed or sold illegally on the black market worth $10 billion a year~

~animals suffer greatly and are often forgotten during natural disasters and wars~

World Animal Day is a time to celebrate and appreciate our relationship with the animals that share our planet and the ways in which they enrich our lives. It is also an important opportunity to speak out to ensure the humane treatment of farm animals and to advocate for protection of the habitats that are home to wild animals.
