Robert Reich threw out an idea to his nearly 1.7 million Facebook followers this week that has a lot of people asking: How do we make this happen?

In a Facebook post on Sunday, December 18, the former secretary of labor under President Bill Clinton noted the dearth of celebrities and musicians willing to participate in Donald Trump’s inauguration festivities.

Many supported Hillary Clinton.

So Reich is championing the idea that celebrities host an event of their own on Inauguration Day to give the official event, starring Trump, a run for the ratings.

“Someone just suggested to me a televised ‘freedom concert’ to air at the same time as the inauguration – with huge celebrities like Beyoncé and Jay Z, Madonna, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, and so on,” Reich wrote.

“Alec Baldwin MC’s the event, playing Trump as he does on SNL.

“Presto.

The Trump inauguration loses all the TV ratings. Basically, no one watches it.”

Reich also suggested that such a concert could raise money for a variety of progressive causes, including “the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Lambda Legal, NAACP, Common Cause, CAIR, IRAP, SPLC, Environmental Defense Fund, Human Rights Campaign Fund, MoveOn, Economic Policy Institute, Inequality Media, and GLAAD.”

His post inspired a Change.org petition that, as of Wednesday morning, had attracted nearly 44,000 signatures and dozens of supporters on Twitter.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR

This is the time of the year when everything is nice and rosy, supposedly. It’s Christmas time ….

However, we are living in times of over racism, bigotry, discrimination and inequality.

One of the hot topics is religion.

In my humble opinion, religion is a set of spiritual beliefs and rules that each individual adopts be it by family values, education, tradition and many more reasons.

There is no religion better than any other.

Religion should serve as a guide, as moral posts for personal behavior. It should be a “road map”. A very personal guide which shouldn’t be imposed on any other individual. As such, all religions should be respected.

Because, in the end, whether we like it or not, we all are connected.

States fight to push anti-gay bills. But will they pass?

The Supreme Court’s ruling striking down the Defense of Marriage set off a chain reaction of federal judges ruling state bans on same-sex marriage bans as unconstitutional. But at the same time that same-sex marriage rights appear to be advancing, conservative legislators in more than a dozen states have been pushing for exceptions that would allow discrimination against gays and lesbians in the name of religious freedom.

“Religious freedom is a shield, not a sword,” says Nick Worner of the Ohio ACLU, paraphrasing George H.W. Bush appointed federal Judge Carol Jackson. “It’s not religious freedom when you’re using it to hurt someone else.”

~”Religious Liberty” Activists Fight Back~

People across the country banded together last year to protest SB 1062, a law proposed in Arizona, which would have allowed businesses and employees to refuse service to LGBT people or others who offend their religious sensibilities. Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed the bill after receiving immense pressure, but in Mississippi, Gov. Phil Bryant signed a similar one into law in April.

Conservatives have vowed to continue the push for such “religious liberty” laws in other states. So far in 2015, at least five of these bills are on the American Civil Liberties Union’s radar: Texas’s and South Carolina’s legislatures are eyeing bills that would prohibit government employees from recognizing a same-sex couple’s relationship (through marriage licenses, mostly).

Bills in Virginia, Georgia, and Utah would allow individual state employees to decided whether they want to participate in same-sex marriages. As the ACLU has put it, these laws are largely a reaction or backlash toward LGBT gains, like marriage equality, in those states and nationally.
