I don’t live in Puerto Rico anymore. I was born and raised there.

Politics is a national sport.

A referendum was held on June 11, 2017.

It was a ruse, a futile exercise and a total waste of money.

Referendum on the political status of Puerto Rico held in Puerto Rico on June 11, 2017

The referendum had three options: becoming a state of the United States, independence/free association, or maintaining the current territorial status.

Those who voted overwhelmingly chose statehood by 97%; turnout, however, was 23%, a historically low figure.

(recalculating and using additional numbers, that number decreased to 18% turnout)

This figure is attributed to a boycott led by the pro-status quo PPD party.

Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Roselló, pushed ahead with his top campaign promise of trying to convert the US territory into a state, holding a Sunday referendum to let voters send a message to Congress.

His party has launched an aggressive ad campaign urging people to “demand respect” with their vote – to choose statehood so the island can obtain equal treatment from the federal government that some say would ease a 10-year economic recession that has spurred nearly half a million Puerto Ricans to flee to the U.S. mainland.

Clinton’s campaign delivered a speech in San Diego.  It drew draw a clear line between the former secretary of state’s plans and those outlined by Trump, which include having Mexico pay for a border wall that its president, Enrique Peña Nieto, said his country would not support, and temporarily banning Muslims from entering the US.

Clinton campaign senior policy adviser Jake Sullivan said the speech would outline why Trump was “fundamentally unfit” to be president.

“And you will hear in her speech a confidence in America and our capacity to overcome the challenges we face while staying true to our values – a strong contrast to Donald Trump’s incessant trash-talking of America,” Sullivan said.

Clinton’s campaign has steered its plan of attack towards Trump while fending off the other remaining Democratic hopeful, Bernie Sanders.

In light of the Oregon shooting, October 1, 2015, that left 10 people dead, we have updated this story from 2014. It remains our most popular piece.

Whenever a mass shooting occurs, a debate about gun violence ensues. An often-cited counter to the point about the United States’ high rates of gun homicides is that people in other countries kill one another at the same rate using different types of weapons. It’s not true.

Compared to other countries, the United States has exceptional homicide rates, and it’s driven by gun violence.

The U.S. has higher rates of homicides from guns than Pakistan. At 4.5 deaths per 100,000 people, the U.S. rates aren’t much lower than gun homicide rates in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (5.2 deaths per 100,000 people).

Annually, the U.S. has about two fewer gun homicide deaths per 100,000 people than Iraq, which has 6.5 deaths per 100,000.
