The month of June 2015 …. “Major Flag Stories”!!

~~June 26, 2015~~

A strong push to remove the Confederate battle flag from Capitol grounds in South Carolina and Alabama — as well as the shelves of major retailers — was sparked by the racially motivated killings of nine people inside a historic black church last week.

Long a controversial symbol, the flag can be seen in photos of the accused shooter, Dylann Roof. Roof, 21, used a “Stars and Bars” license plate holder on his car and can be seen waving the battle flag in other shots. Roof’s apparent embrace of the flag has energized its opponents and caused some politicians to rethink their previous support for its use.

Over the years, the Confederate battle flag has come to mean different things to different people in politics and pop culture. To many, it is emblematic of slavery, racism and the bloody battles that made the Civil War the deadliest conflict in U.S. history. But supporters of the flag say they see it as a memorial to slain Confederate soldiers.

In a long-sought victory for the gay rights movement, the Supreme Court ruled by a 5-to-4 vote on Friday, June 26, that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage.

Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, writing for the majority in the historic decision, said gay and lesbian couples had a fundamental right to marry.

“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family,” he wrote. “In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”

The decision, which was the culmination of decades of litigation and activism, set off celebrations across the country and the first same-sex marriages in several states. It came against the backdrop of fast-moving changes in public opinion, with polls indicating that most Americans now approve of the unions.

Thoughts for today …. #107!!

~~February 11, 2015~~

After facing decades of discrimination, all same-sex couples in Alabama were finally going to have the right to marry on Monday, February 9, but then Alabama’s Chief Justice Roy Moore stepped in.

While thousands of loving couples began to line up to exchange their long-awaited vows, Moore – who is no stranger to controversy or anti-gay hate — explicitly called on county judges to disobey a federal court order that allowed marriage equality to begin. Specifically, he ordered them to refuse to issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples.

And in shocking and flagrant violation of federal law, many counties decided to abide by his request and stand on the side of bigotry by either denying same-sex couples marriage applications or shutting down their offices altogether.

These judges’ moves are unconscionable, and we need you to join us to speak out against them so that ALL Alabama couples have the right to marry — not just those who happen to live in counties with law-abiding judges.

The majority of counties in Alabama – shown here in blue – are defying the federal court order to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

Same-Sex Marriages Proceed in Alabama as State Judge’s Order Is Defied

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Amid conflicting signals from federal courts and the chief justice of Alabama’s Supreme Court, some Alabama counties began granting marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Monday, February 9, in a legal showdown with echoes of the battles over desegregation in the 1960’s.

In major county seats like Birmingham, Montgomery and Huntsville, gay couples lined up outside courthouses as they opened, and emerged smiling, licenses in hand, after being wed by clerks or by the judges themselves.

At the Jefferson County Courthouse here, Judge Michael G. Graffeo of Circuit Court officiated, at times tearfully, at the civil wedding of Dinah McCaryer and Olanda Smith, the first to emerge from the crowd of same-sex couples who lined up Monday morning. “I now pronounce Olanda and Dinah are married spouses, entitled to all rights and privileges, as well as all responsibilities, afforded and placed upon them by the State of Alabama,” Judge Graffeo said.

~~November 18, 2014~~

A record 2.5 million children in the U.S. were homeless at some point in 2013, according to a new report from the National Center for Family and Homelessness.

This amounts to one in 30 children and an 8 percent increase in child homelessness between 2012 and 2013. Nearly half the children are under the age of six. While the problem is most prevalent in Alabama, Mississippi, and California, it exists in every city, county, and state in the country.

The nation’s high poverty rate, a lack of affordable housing, and traumatic experiences – especially domestic violence — are the main causes of rising child homelessness. Most of the children come from single parent households, and 20-50 percent of the mothers of homeless children have experienced intimate partner violence, according to the report.

The effect of even temporary homelessness may lead to serious mental health issues and affect a child for the rest of his or her life. Trauma stemming from residential instability has been shown to interfere with learning and lead to poor cognitive skills and emotional self-regulation.

A new twist to the “Ice Bucket Challenge” …. Orlando Jones!!

~~August 22, 2014~~

Orlando Jones (born April 10, 1968) is an American comedian and film and television actor. He is notable for being one of the original cast members of the sketch comedy series MADtv and for his role as the 7 Up spokesman from 1999 to 2002.

Jones was born in Mobile, Alabama on April 10, 1968. His father was a former professional baseball player for the Philadelphia Phillies. He moved to Mauldin, South Carolina, when he was a teen and graduated from Mauldin High School in 1985. One of his early acting experiences involved playing a werewolf in a haunted house to help raise money for the junior/senior prom. Jones enrolled in the College of Charleston, South Carolina. He left in 1990 without finishing his degree.

He scored his first Hollywood job in 1987, writing for the NBC comedy A Different World, on which he had a small guest role in the season five finale. During 1991-92, Jones penned the Fox series Roc and, in 1993, he co-produced The Sinbad Show. He also made a brief appearance on the FOX sitcom Herman’s Head in 1992.

Orlando Jones posted this video of his “Bucket Challenge” in an attempt to bring attention to violence in the United States and around the world. What was in his bucket represents the lives taken unjustly around our country. As a lifetime member of the NRA he said: “I’m challenging myself to listen without prejudice, to love without limits and to reverse the hate.”

He explains his NRA membership in an interview with Fusion like this. Jones: “I had a cross burned in my front yard when I was in the 6th grade. I grew up in the Deep South and I have a very intimate relationship with race. My father carried a gun. Did he carry it because he was some thug or anarchist or wanted to hurt people? No, he wanted to protect his family. For me, I became a member (of the NRA) because I wanted to affect change in the organization. Do I share all of their ideals? No…”
