Movie Time …. “Annie”, 2014 new version!!

~~December 23, 2014~~

I went to the movies yesterday. It was a long awaited day … the previews on this movie have been shown for months. The day arrived and off we went: Angelika, Sophia and me.

It was fun!!

Annie is an American musical comedy-drama film directed by Will Gluck and produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith. It stars Quvenzhané Wallis in the title role and Jamie Foxx in the role of Will Stacks, an update of Daddy Warbucks. It is a contemporary adaptation of the musical of the same name, which was in turn based upon the 1924 comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray.

The third film adaptation following Columbia Pictures’ 1982 theatrical film and Disney’s 1999 made-for-television film, it began production in August 2013 and was released on December 19, 2014

Ten-year-old Annie Bennett is a foster child living in Harlem. She lives with the alcoholic and bitter Colleen Hannigan, who has taken in four other foster girls named Isabella, Tessie, Mia, and Pepper in order to receive money from the state. Unlike the other girls, Annie believes her parents will one day return for her and imagines what they might be like (“Maybe“). The next morning, Hannigan (annoyed by the girls’ singing from the previous night) puts them to work cleaning up the apartment ahead of a visit from their social worker (“It’s the Hard-Knock Life“).

On the other side of the city, Will Stacks, cell phone mogul and billionaire, is running a disastrous campaign for mayor of New York City. His hotshot adviser Guy, his assistant Grace Farrell, and bodyguard Nash attempt to help him clean up his public image, but Stacks’ general dislike for people alienates him from would-be voters.

Running home from after another failed attempt to discover her parents (“Tomorrow“), Annie is rescued by Stacks from the path of a speeding truck. A video of Stacks’ heroism goes viral and his approval rating goes up. Guy suggests that Stacks invite Annie to his home for lunch as a publicity stunt to capitalize on the public interest in Annie.

Annie, recognizing an opportunity, suggests that Stacks become her temporary guardian, promising him more photo opportunities. Stacks agrees, and Annie moves into his luxurious but lonely penthouse (“I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here“). Meanwhile, Hannigan is frustrated that Annie has become famous while her own life goes nowhere (“Little Girls“).

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - September 25, 2013

Stacks arranges many public outings with Annie, always in the eye of reporters and social media, including taking her to a film premiere with her foster sisters (“You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile“). Grace and Nash are charmed by their new charge and soon grow to love her. Annie, however, grows concerned that Stacks never seems to enjoy himself and does her best to cheer him up. Stacks, in turn, begins to see that Annie’s life mirrors his own disadvantaged childhood. He begins to open up to her, culminating in the two bonding over their mutual love of New York City (“The City’s Yours“). However, during a public event when Stacks asks Annie to read a speech (“Opportunity“), he learns that Annie is illiterate, making him realize that he cares for Annie and makes plans to formally adopt her.

Guy, who does not see or understand the change, plans to stage a publicity stunt in which Stacks will reunite Annie with her parents. This he believes will be the final stroke to getting Stacks elected mayor, while securing for Guy a huge bonus that will allow him to retire from public relations. He offers Hannigan part of his anticipated bonus if she will help him find a set of fake parents to present to the public at the right moment (“Easy Street“), but when Hannigan bungles her end of the deal, he ditches her in favor of hiring two actors and faking a DNA test.

Annie is publicly reunited with her “parents”. Stacks is miserable at the prospect of losing her, and Hannigan is disturbed to learn that Guy plans to leave Annie with these strangers until after the election, then abandon her on the streets. Hannigan, Will, and Annie reflect on their inner conflict (“Who Am I?“) before Hannigan, along with the foster girls, goes to Stacks to tell him that Annie is in danger.

After an extended car/helicopter chase, the fake parents are cut off by Stacks’ helicopter and the police. Annie is rescued. Due to the comments the impostors made, Annie still believes that Stacks betrayed her.

To prove himself, Stacks goes to the reporters on the scene and formally announces he is withdrawing from the mayoral race in order to spend more time with his new adopted daughter Annie. At Annie’s urging, Stacks invites Grace to dinner and the two kiss marking their new romantic relationship. Annie, Grace, and Stacks look forward to their future as a family (“I Don’t Need Anything But You“).

Some time later, Stacks is devoting his time and money by giving back to New York City starting by founding a literacy center, where, at the opening, Annie is able to read a speech. The film concludes with the whole cast singing a reprise of “Tomorrow“.

We ALL are ONE!!

…. and all the people say “Amen”!!

~~October 24, 2014~~

Today was an early morning for me. Angelika, my oldest grand daughter had an activity at her school before classes started and she asked me it I would go see her class perform three songs. How could I say no?

(She the second one from the right.)

It’s so refreshing and uplifting to see these children express feelings of goodness, kindness and spirituality. I see them doing so and I can only hope that their innocent, genuine and real feelings stay as they are.

I can only hope that the world they inherit doesn’t damage or distort them.

~~Connor, Angelika and me~~

The speaker spoke described what “blessings” are. Interesting that I started my postings today with blessings too.

Blessings are all the things that come our way to make our life easier, more comfortable and meaningful. It’s our duty to share them … pay them forward.

“You have been blessed with immeasurable power to make positive changes in your life.”
~~Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free~~

To start the day …. a touching school activity!!

~~October 10, 2014~~

These are two of my grand-kids.

The girl is Angelika, 9 years old; the boy is her younger brother, Connor, 6 years old.

This morning they had an activity at their school. They go to a Christian school and learn plenty about how to life a good life.

It was good to see this in person. Their stage in life is where they are still being formed … physically, mentally and spiritually.

It was comforting and reassuring to see that.

The event ended with the following song …. one that I’ve always liked.

We ALL are ONE!!

At the end of the day …. “Let it Go”, tribal!!

~~September 7, 2014~~

This is a song that most should be familiar with, particularly if you have children.

I watched this movie with Angelika plenty of times and this is one of her favorite songs.

Before I became aware of this song, “Let It Go” was one of my mantras. To me, this means that there are times that you need to be ready to let things so … be it because you have no further use for them, because they don’t help you grow and because they are weighing you down.

There comes a time when we need to face our reality and determine if it’s time to let go. We also need to learn which battles are worth fighting!

Life is very short, embrace life’s moments and what it offers your way …. “It Is What It Is“, accept and move on.

~Partial Lyrics~

“It’s funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can’t get to me at all!

It’s time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through

No right, no wrong, no rules for me I’m free!

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You’ll never see me cry!

Here I stand
And here I’ll stay
Let the storm rage on!

We ALL are ONE!!

At the end of the day …. don’t let the world make you hard!!

~~August 17, 2014~~

When we arrive on this world, we are connected to Source. We are like a blank page on a notebook. There’s nothing written there. There are no rules yet established. It’s like an empty CD. There’s innocence, all is good and pleasurable. No boundaries or limits are in place.

There’s intense love and purity.

How long does this stage last?

As soon as we realize what is around us, after the mother figure ceases to be the center of attention, that’s when the outside world starts invading our small inside “world”.

I remember when I first held Angelika, my oldest grandchild, in my forearm (that’s how tiny she was). I looked into those big, brown eyes and saw nothing but bright light and wonder. I didn’t want to let her go. I didn’t want to see her grow. I knew then that this couldn’t be. Of course, she would grow up and start making her way in her world.

As we all walk along our path we have experiences that leave their marks in our self. There’s pain generated through some experiences. There’s mistrust generated also. We may become bitter because of this.

Try with all our might to still believe that this is a beautiful world.

That’s our mission.

Keeping this mission, during the days that we are living, is proving to be difficult. How can we remain soft, avoid hate and bitterness? How can we remain soft when all that surrounds us can have no other effect but to make us hard?

We see greed, dishonesty, conflict, prejudice, disease, inequality, persecution, racism, bullying, poverty, hunger, conflicts, war, killing … on a daily basis, be it at “home” or around the world. Try as hard as you can …. keep the faith, continue your journey and believe.

“Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.”

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. ( November 11, 1922 – April 11, 2007) was an American writer. His works such as Cat’s Cradle (1963), Slaughterhouse-Five (1969), and Breakfast of Champions (1973) blend satire, gallows humor, and science fiction. As a citizen he was a lifelong supporter of the American Civil Liberties Union and a critical pacifist intellectual. He was known for his humanist beliefs and was honorary president of the American Humanist Association.

The New York Times headline at the time of Vonnegut’s passing called Vonnegut “the counterculture’s novelist”.

Angelika’s Songs …. “Fireworks”!!

~~July 11, 2014~~

This is Angelika, my oldest grand-daughter, you may have seen her here a few times. She is 9 years old.

She loves music, as much as I do. She’s been keeping me up to date with some of the new songs that are coming out. She knows the songs but doesn’t know the performer most of the time. I’ve trying to teach her it’s important to also know who is singing. Very frequently, we use the “Shazam” app to identify the singer/band.

I created this series: Angelika’s Songs  to post here the new songs that she teaches me about.

Angelika is still on her trip up north. I spoke with her a few nights ago and she’s still listening for songs to educate me about. She gave me two new titles. The first one: TImber … I posted yesterday.

For today … here it is!

Firework” is a song by American recording artist Katy Perry from her third studio album, Teenage Dream (2010). Perry co-wrote the song with its producers, StarGate and Sandy Vee, with additional writing from Ester Dean, making this the only single and one of seven songs from Teenage Dream to not be co-written or produced by Max Martin and Dr. Luke. The song is a self-empowerment anthem with inspirational lyrics, and was considered by Perry as an important song for her on Teenage Dream.

Firework” received mostly positive reviews from music critics, with some noting its catchy melody and danceable beat and comparing it to songs by English band Coldplay. The song was commercially successful, reaching the top spot on Billboard Hot 100 and the top five on 20 charts around the world. The song was released on October 18, 2010 by Capitol Records as the third single from the album. As of December 2012, the song has sold over 6 million copies in the US alone, making Perry the only artist with three songs topping the 6 million mark.

It is also the best selling song that was a third single or older, that wasn’t a part of a re-release. On the week ending of January 8, 2011, “Firework” sold 509,000 digital downloads in the US, which is the fifth highest amount ever sold by a female artist behind Taylor Swift‘s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (623,000), Kesha‘s “Tik Tok” (610,000), Perry’s own “Roar” (557,000), tied with Lady Gaga‘s “Born This Way” (509,000) and the sixth highest sales week overall. The song is the third consecutive number-one single of the same album; the last female singer who achieved this was Monica in 1998.

An accompanying music video, directed by Dave Meyers, was released on October 28, 2010. It portrays Perry singing and dancing around Budapest, with interspersed scenes of young people becoming confident in themselves. An open casting call for the music video drew an unprecedented 38,000 applicants. On Much Music‘s top 50 videos of 2010, “Firework” reached the top position.

The music video was said to be a more upbeat take on Christina Aguilera‘s message in “Beautiful“. It was nominated for three awards at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, eventually winning one of those, the Video of the Year, the main and final award. “Firework” was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 54th Grammy Awards. On January 5, 2012, “Firework” was elected the fifth most played single on U.S. radio during 2011 by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, with 509,000 plays.

Angelika’s Songs …. Passenger – Let Her Go!!

~~July 4, 2014~~

This is Angelika, my oldest grandaughter, you may have seen her here a few times. She is 9 years old at this time.

I have been blessed by the fact the she loves music, as much as I do. She’s been keeping me up to date with some of the new songs that are coming out. She knows the songs but doesn’t know the performer most of the time. I’ve trying to teach her it’s important to also know who is singing. Very frequently, we use the “Shazam” app to identify the singer/band.

This is a good thing because I’m behind on the new songs coming out.

(You know how easy it is to get stuck on the songs of your time! )

I decided to create this series: Angelika’s Songs. I will post here the new songs that she teaches me about.

She surprised me by telling me about this song yesterday. She even told me it was “Passenger“. She looked it up on YouTube and found the one with the lyrics. I must be doing something right.

Hope you enjoy it!
