The Queen of Soul was honored outside Queen Elizabeth’s London residence

The Band of the Welsh Guards paid tribute to Aretha Franklin outside at Buckingham Palace in London on Friday, as stars turned out to attend the legendary singer’s funeral in Detroit. They played Franklin’s hit “Respect” during the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

“The Band of the Welsh Guards are world famous for their musical versatility and professional performance and on August 16 paid tribute to another musical icon and one that has been of huge influence and inspiration to our musicians – Aretha Franklin, whose funeral was being held in Detroit 3,748 miles away, at the same time of the Queen’s Guard Change,” the British Army wrote on their YouTube page.

“In the Army Respect for others underpins all that we do, so there was only one tune that would do for today’s ceremony: the 1967 Aretha Franklin hit ‘R.E.S.P.E.C.T.’ a declaration from a strong confident woman who knows that she has everything.”

The performance was received with respectful applause from the gathered crowd.

The British Army performed Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” on Friday, August 31, 2018 in honour of the “Queen of Soul” during the Changing of the Guard outside Buckingham Palace.

The honor occurred the same day a funeral was being held for the singer in Detroit, Michigan.

Aretha Franklin sang “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” during a tribute to Carole King in 2015

“Carole was losing her mind, Obama was losing his mind,” said the Broadway actress Chilina Kennedy.

In her final decade, Aretha Franklin’s two best-loved performances both took place in Washington.

In 2009, she graced Barack Obama’s inauguration with a gorgeous “My Country, ’Tis of Thee” while wearing a hat so remarkable it ended up on display in the Smithsonian. And on Dec. 6, 2015, she sang an unforgettable rendition of her own anthem of rebirth, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” in tribute to the song’s co-writer, Carole King, who was receiving the Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime achievement alongside Rita Moreno, Cicely Tyson and other luminaries.

BUT BEFORE … 

One amazing performance came in 1998.

It was 30 minutes into the 1998 Grammy Awards and Gary Simmons, the assistant to the show’s co-producer, Tisha Fein, got a phone call:

Luciano Pavarotti would not be performing.

Franklin had been booked on the show to perform a Blues Brothers number with Dan Aykroyd, John Goodman and Jim Belushi. Two nights before, however, she had actually performed “Nessun Dorma” in honor of Pavarotti at a Music Cares dinner. The Grammys producer had an empty hole where Pavarotti’s performance was supposed to be, crossing into the third hour of the show.

Could she possibly …?

Luciano Pavarotti, too unwell to perform at the Grammy Awards, was replaced at the last minute by the Queen of Soul herself, who was a friend of the opera singer.

However, instead of opting for one of her own hits, Franklin stuck with the aria most synonymous with Pavarotti, “Nessun Dorma”.

More than a billion viewers watched live on TV  across the world on as Franklin hit the Puccini number’s signature high B with ease, stunning the 1998 Grammy Awards audience in Radio City Music Hall and sending the jaws of artists including Celine Dion to the floor.

Several years later, Franklin performed the track yet again – this time for Pope Francis at a show in Philadelphia.

Amanda Mena, a 15-year-old who had been bullied at school for not knowing English as a child, soared on Tuesday night’s, June 19, “America’s Got Talent.”

Mena belted a version of Aretha Franklin’s classic “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” that brought the house down and left the celebrity judges searching for words.

“My gosh, where do I start? That was just incredible,” said judge Mel B. “I got goose pimples all over. I love you, I love your voice, and this is what I’m going to say to all those bullies.”

Mel B then pressed the show’s Golden Buzzer, sending Mena directly on to the show’s live rounds.

“Do you know what you have, Amanda?” asked judge Simon Cowell.

“You have genuinely natural soul. You really, really do. I mean, that’s not an easy song to sing. This is an audition we’re going to remember for a long time, Amanda.”
