MESSAGE OF HOPE AND PERSEVERANCE

~Refugee uses ballet to create a message of peace~

Half a year ago, ballet dancer Ahmad Joudeh was giving dance lessons to orphaned children in war-torn Damascus. Now he has made his debut at the Dutch National Ballet and is studying at the ballet academy in Amsterdam.

“It took me a month to fully realize I really am in Amsterdam, and I still can’t believe my luck,” Joudeh says.

For years, as the war raged around him and his family, Joudeh – a stateless Palestinian in Syria – had tried to make ends meet by teaching, and had received death threats from Islamic State. When the summons to do three years of military service arrived, the 26-year-old began to believe that this was going to be the end of the dream that he had cradled from childhood.

But his life changed radically in August 2016 when a Dutch TV journalist made a documentary about him.

Joudeh not only struggled to survive as a dancer during the Syrian war: he also fought a tough, private war to realize his dream.

“My father forbid me to dance,” he says. “Because in our culture, to be a ballet dancer is the worst thing your son can choose to do for a living. He said it was a shame for the family and wanted me to study English or medicine. But I said no, this is my life. I went to dance class secretly. When he found out, he beat me with a wooden stick. He used to beat me really hard. Once he hurt my leg so badly, I couldn’t dance for days. But I never gave in.

Can refugee Ahmad Joudeh use dance change minds?

From performing in the streets of war-torn Syria he received death threats from ISIS, but kept dancing anyways.

Now Ahmad hopes to use his love for dance as a message for peace with the Dutch National Ballet, all the while battling his own inner demons.

Tonight is the final.

The winner will be chosen.

There are ten performers left.

All of them are worthy of winning the title and the prize.

This is only one of the performers who has captured my heart.

Viktor Kee has been performing on stage since he was six years old, the Ukrainian born juggler is a graduate of the professional Circus School in Kiev. He has won awards at most of the world’s major circus festivals including Cirque de Demain in Paris and the International Circus festival in Monte Carlo.

A favorite with audiences around the world, Viktor has performed at the Moulin Rouge, Lido de Paris, the Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin, the Mirage, and the MGM Grand with Barbra Streisand in Las Vegas, Teatro Zinzanni in Seattle, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and around the world with Cirque du Soleil’s “Dralion”, “Voyage de La Vie” Singapore and currently in new Cirque du Soleil show “Amaluna“.

In the development of Viktor’s career he has stood on the shoulders of his forefathers in the juggling world. He has pushed the level of artistic expression in juggling to new levels. For Viktor, the world of movement and object manipulation is not only external, but also a physical manifestation of the internal emotional world. It is an ephemeral event that begs to be experienced viscerally as much as visually.

Quite possibly the world’s sexiest juggler, Viktor Kee, has developed a unique, mesmerizing style of juggling.

A style of performance that melds dance, acrobatics and juggling into a wondrous ballet of sensuality.

Polina Semionova (born 13 September 1984) is a Russian ballet dancer who is currently a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. She also has an older brother, Dmitry Semionov, who is now a principal in the Staatsballett Berlin.

Studying at the Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow, Russia, she won awards in the top ballet competitions; including a gold medal at the Moscow International Ballet Competition 2001, First Prize at the Vaganova-Prix Ballet Competition in St Petersburg 2002, and Junior Prize at the Nagoya (Japan) International Ballet Competition 2002.

Graduating in 2002, Semionova joined the Ballet Staatsoper Berlin as a principal upon the invitation of Vladimir Malakhov, becoming the youngest principal in the company’s history at the age of 18. She toured Japan as Malakhov’s partner, the reason he had invited her to be a principal in the company. He gave her the lead roles in The Nutcracker and La Bayadère during her first season, following with the role of Tatiana in , which became her favorite role.

In 2003, at the age of 19, Semionova performed with the English National Ballet in Swan Lake, receiving approving reviews from English critics.

The following year she joined the California Ballet in their production of The Sleeping Beauty, again impressing critics despite what they termed a disappointing overall ballet.
