SYRIA’S WAR: CONVOLUTED AND COMPLICATED

Syria has been at the forefront of the news for several years.

We know about the war raging within its borders.

We have seen the many refugees leaving and running into uncertain conditions about their travels and their eventual destination.

This week, the situation attracted a huge spotlight due to the launching of Tomahawk missiles, early Friday, April 7, by the United States on a base in western Syria that the United States says was used to launch Tuesday’s chemical attack, April 4, which left nearly 100 people dead and hundreds more injured.

The video explains the many details, factions, alliances and ‘players’.

Franklin Graham’s LGBT-Friendly Biz Boycott Backfires, and Rachel Maddow Loves It

(So do I, by the way)

If there ever was any doubt about Karma, this is a perfect example of it. This is a serious topic because it depicts the bigotry and intense hypocrisy that conservative “christians” show in regards to marriage equality and the LGBTQ community in general.

However, life has a way of setting some things right and this is one of them.

I don’t wish any ill on anyone … there’s no need to.

Life will take care of it.

Rachel Maddow is glad to report that evangelist Franklin Graham traded one gay-friendly bank for an even gay-friendlier one.

If we learned anything about Rachel Maddow from her MSNBC show, it’s that she’s a big fan of instant karma.

As The Advocate reported, Christian evangelist Franklin Graham was so upset with banking titan Wells Fargo on account of its commercial featuring a lesbian couple adopting a deaf child, he announced a plan to boycott the popular bank and switch to another one.

But as Maddow was happy to report, his plan backfired in the best — and gayest — way possible.

As it turns out, the new bank that Graham switched his financial accounts to — North Carolina-based BB&T — is actually a platinum sponsor of the annual Miami Beach Gay Pride festival and parade, one of the country’s biggest pro-LGBT celebrations.

“I love this story so much I want to take it to Franklin Graham’s new bank and marry it …  if it’s a lady,” Maddow said on her show.

Graham is defending his decision to switch banks and his call for a boycott.

According to Maddow’s report, BB&T is also the chief sponsor of the “Legacy Couples” program, which “is a fundraiser that celebrates same-sex couples in committed relationships for 10 years or longer” and that the Miami branch of the bank even built a special chapel to let a gay couple get married there.

“Franklin Graham threw a Facebook hissy fit and moved his accounts because of a commercial showing two women adopting a deaf little girl, but it turns out his new bank is so much gayer than his old bank,” said Maddow.

“The universe has a way of making these things work out!”

As I read this, I think back to a time when I wasn’t aware of this. Before that time I thought that all was perfect. Ah, the blessing of ignorance or misinformation.

There was a time when I thought there were principles to follow, there were ethics to adhere to. There was a definite line between right and wrong.

Where did it all go? When did it all change? Was it always like this?

Was I naive and ignorant of the reality that surrounded me?

Doctors, lawyers, universities, government, press, religion, banks. 

All entities with power, all entities that have been entrusted with overseeing some sort of welfare of the masses.

When did it become corrupt?

Is there anyway to make it right again? 

I wonder …..

“…It’s NOT the greatest country in the world, Professor. That’s my answer.

Fine. Sharon, the NEA is a loser. Yeah, it accounts for a penny out of our paycheck, but he gets to hit you with it anytime he wants. It doesn’t cost money. It costs votes. It costs airtime. And column inches. You know why people don’t like liberals? Because they lose. If liberals are so fuckin’ smart then how come they lose so goddamn always?

And with a straight face, you’re gonna sit there and tell students that America is so star-spangled awesome that we’re the only ones in the world who have freedom? Canada has freedom. Japan has freedom. The U.K. France. Italy. Germany. Spain. Australia. BELGIUM has freedom. Two hundred and seven sovereign states in the world, like, a hundred and eighty of them have freedom.

And you, Sorority Girl, just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth one day, there’s some things you should know. One of them is there’s absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we’re the greatest country in the world. We’re seventh in literacy. Twenty-seventh in math. Twenty-second in science. Forty-ninth in life expectancy. A hundred and seventy-eighth in infant mortality. Third in median household income. Number four in labor force and number four in exports. We lead the world in only three categories: Number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending, where we spend more than the next twenty-six countries combined, twenty-five of whom are allies.

Now none of this is the fault of a twenty-year-old college student, but you nonetheless are without a doubt a member of the worst, period, generation, period, ever, period. So when you ask what makes us the greatest country in the world, I dunno what the fuck you’re talkin’ about.

Yosemite?

Sure used to be. We stood up for what was right. We fought for moral reasons. We passed laws, struck down laws, for moral reasons. We waged wars on poverty, not poor people. We sacrificed. We cared about our neighbors. We put our money where our mouths were. And we never beat our chest.

We built great big things, made ungodly technological advances, explored the universe, cured diseases, and we cultivated the world’s greatest artists and the world’s greatest economy. We reached for the stars. Acted like men.

We aspired to intelligence. We didn’t belittle it, it didn’t make us feel inferior.

We didn’t identify ourselves by who we voted for in the last election, and we didn’t, oh, we didn’t scare so easy. Ha. We were able to be all these things and do all these things because we were informed. By great men. Men who were revered. First step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one. America is not the greatest country in the world anymore. Enough?”
