‘Despacito’ …. “🎼 Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee …. It was a Matter of Time …. before it hit the White House … 🎼 “!!

Who Would’ve Thought the Fever Would Hit Drumpf?

This song become a ‘brainworm’.

I do like the it.

The main reason is because it’s an awesome hit for two well-known Puerto Rican singers, each one in their own category.

Their work together in this project has become worldwide known … inspiring covers and parodies.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee are Puerto Rican singers behind the international phenomenon and No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100.

Go, Puerto Rico!!

To start the day …. Carlos Santana: “María, María”!!

~~May 2, 2015~~

Maria Maria” is a song by Santana featuring The Product G&B.

It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 8, 2000, and stayed there for ten weeks. At the 2000 Grammy Awards, the song won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Despite other lead singers from the album receiving awards, The Product G&B did not receive a Grammy. Marc Anthony also sang on a version of the song.

In 2008, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Hot 100 chart, Billboard compiled its list of the top 100 songs since the inception of the chart in various categories. “Maria Maria” came in at No. 96 on the list of the Billboard All-Time Hot 100 Top Songs, and No. 2 on the list of Top Billboard Hot 100 Latin Songs of All Time. Later, it was named the 14th most successful song from 2000 to 2009, on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade.

Carlos Santana has collaborated with Chef Roberto Santibañez to open five restaurants named Maria Maria, after the song. The majority are located in the San Francisco Bay Area, other locations include Arizona and Texas.

Ladies and gents
Turn up your sound systems
To the sound of Carlos Santana
In the GMB ghetto blues
From the refugee camps

Oh Maria, Maria
She remind me of a West Side story
Growin’ up in Spanish Harlem
She livin’ a life just like a movie star

Oh Maria, Maria
She fell in love in East L.A.
To the sounds of the guitar yeah yeah
Played by Carlos Santana

Stop the lootin’, stop the shootin’
Pick pocking on the corner
See as the rich is getting richer
The poor is getting poorer

Se mira Maria on the corner
Thinkin’ of ways to make it better
In my mailbox there’s an eviction letter
Somebody just said, “See you later”

Ahora vengo mama chula mama chula
Ahora vengo mama chula
(East Coast)
Ahora vengo mama chula mama chula
Ahora vengo mama chula

Maria, Maria
(West Coast)
She remind me of a West Side story
Growin’ up in Spanish Harlem
She livin’ a life just like a movie star

Oh Maria, Maria
She fell in love in East L.A.
I said it to the sounds of the guitar yeah yeah
Played by Carlos Santana

I said a la favella, los colores
The streets are getting hotter
There is no water to putout the fire
Mi canto la esperanza

Se mira Maria on the corner
Thinkin’ of ways to make it better
Then I looked up in the sky
Hopin’ the days of paradise

Ahora vengo mama chula mama chula
Ahora vengo mama chula
(North side)
Ahora vengo mama chula mama chula
Ahora vengo mama chula
(South side)

Ahora vengo mama chula mama chula
Ahora vengo mama chula
Ahora vengo mama chula mama chula
Ahora vengo mama chula
(Open up your eyes)

Maria you know you’re my lover
When the wind blows I can feel you
Through the weather and even when we’re apart
It still feels like we’re together

Maria, oh yeah
She remind me of a West Side story
Growin’ up in Spanish Harlem
She livin’ a life just like a movie star

Oh Maria, Maria
Oh, she fell in love in East L.A.
To the sounds of the guitar
Played by Carlos Santana

Put ’em up y’all

Angelika’s Songs …. “Fireworks”!!

~~July 11, 2014~~

This is Angelika, my oldest grand-daughter, you may have seen her here a few times. She is 9 years old.

She loves music, as much as I do. She’s been keeping me up to date with some of the new songs that are coming out. She knows the songs but doesn’t know the performer most of the time. I’ve trying to teach her it’s important to also know who is singing. Very frequently, we use the “Shazam” app to identify the singer/band.

I created this series: Angelika’s Songs  to post here the new songs that she teaches me about.

Angelika is still on her trip up north. I spoke with her a few nights ago and she’s still listening for songs to educate me about. She gave me two new titles. The first one: TImber … I posted yesterday.

For today … here it is!

Firework” is a song by American recording artist Katy Perry from her third studio album, Teenage Dream (2010). Perry co-wrote the song with its producers, StarGate and Sandy Vee, with additional writing from Ester Dean, making this the only single and one of seven songs from Teenage Dream to not be co-written or produced by Max Martin and Dr. Luke. The song is a self-empowerment anthem with inspirational lyrics, and was considered by Perry as an important song for her on Teenage Dream.

Firework” received mostly positive reviews from music critics, with some noting its catchy melody and danceable beat and comparing it to songs by English band Coldplay. The song was commercially successful, reaching the top spot on Billboard Hot 100 and the top five on 20 charts around the world. The song was released on October 18, 2010 by Capitol Records as the third single from the album. As of December 2012, the song has sold over 6 million copies in the US alone, making Perry the only artist with three songs topping the 6 million mark.

It is also the best selling song that was a third single or older, that wasn’t a part of a re-release. On the week ending of January 8, 2011, “Firework” sold 509,000 digital downloads in the US, which is the fifth highest amount ever sold by a female artist behind Taylor Swift‘s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (623,000), Kesha‘s “Tik Tok” (610,000), Perry’s own “Roar” (557,000), tied with Lady Gaga‘s “Born This Way” (509,000) and the sixth highest sales week overall. The song is the third consecutive number-one single of the same album; the last female singer who achieved this was Monica in 1998.

An accompanying music video, directed by Dave Meyers, was released on October 28, 2010. It portrays Perry singing and dancing around Budapest, with interspersed scenes of young people becoming confident in themselves. An open casting call for the music video drew an unprecedented 38,000 applicants. On Much Music‘s top 50 videos of 2010, “Firework” reached the top position.

The music video was said to be a more upbeat take on Christina Aguilera‘s message in “Beautiful“. It was nominated for three awards at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, eventually winning one of those, the Video of the Year, the main and final award. “Firework” was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 54th Grammy Awards. On January 5, 2012, “Firework” was elected the fifth most played single on U.S. radio during 2011 by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, with 509,000 plays.

At the end of the day …. True Colors!!

~~May 20, 2014~~

True Colors” is a song written by songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. It was both the title track and the first single released from Cyndi Lauper‘s second album. It was the only original song on the album that Lauper did not help write.

“True Colors” spent two weeks in the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the last single from Lauper to occupy the top of the chart. It received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

~~Song information~~

Billy Steinberg originally wrote “True Colors” about his own mother. Tom Kelly altered the first verse and the duo originally submitted the song to Anne Murray, who passed, and then to Cyndi Lauper. Their demo was in a form of piano based gospel ballad like “Bridge over Troubled Water“. Steinberg told Songfacts that “Cyndi completely dismantled that sort of traditional arrangement and came up with something that was breathtaking and stark.” Other songs they wrote for Cyndi Lauper include “I Drove All Night” and “Unconditional Love”, of which the former went on to be covered by Celine Dion, the latter by Susanna Hoffs.

It reached number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, 3 in Australia, and 12 on the UK Singles Chart.

“True Colors” also became a standard in the gay community.

In various interviews, Cyndi elaborated that the song had resonated with her because of the recent death of her friend, Gregory Natal, from HIV/AIDS. While not directly promoted as a song defending LGBT rights, Cindy is pleased that her song was adopted by that community. Years later, Cindy Lauper co-founded the True Colors Fund, a non-profit dedicated to eradicating LGBT youth homelessness.

A choral version of the song was used in a series of TV commercials advertising a variety of Kodak‘s color photographic film products.

Lauper embarked on a True Colors Tour in 2007 with several other acts including Deborah Harry and Erasure. The tour was for the Human Rights Campaign to promote human rights in the US and beyond. A second True Colors tour occurred in 2008.

The challenge is to be you in a world that’s trying to make you like everyone else. It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for something you are not … Even when times are bad, just remember to be yourself ….

You are perfect the way you are ….
