PUERTO RICAN WOMEN

I’m a proud Boricua woman

My heritage comes from Taíno, Spanish and African roots.

All of which I’m very proud of.

Many came before me … and in 1950, I was born!

The recorded history of women in Puerto Rico can trace its roots back to the era of the Taíno, the indigenous people of the Caribbean, who inhabited the island that they called “Borikén” before the arrival of Spaniards. During the Spanish colonization the cultures and customs of the Taíno, Spanish, African and women from non-Hispanic European countries blended into what became the culture and customs of Puerto Rico.

In the early part of the 19th Century the women in Puerto Rico were Spanish subjects and had little individual rights. Those who belonged to the upper class of the Spanish ruling society had better educational opportunities then those who did not. However, there were many women who were already active participants in the labor movement and in the agricultural economy of the island.

After Puerto Rico was ceded to the United States in 1898 as a result of the Spanish–American War, women once again played an integral role in Puerto Rican society by contributing to the establishment of the University of Puerto Rico, women’s suffrage, women’s rights, civil rights, and to the military of the United States.

During the period of industrialization of the 1950’s, many women in Puerto Rico found employment in the needle industry, working as seamstresses in garment factories. Many Puerto Rican families also migrated to the United States in the 1950’s.

SAINT MARIA MAGDALENA de PAZZIS

Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery is a colonial-era cemetery located in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

It is the final resting place of many of Puerto Rico’s most prominent natives and residents.

(Notice one of them: Félix Benítez Rexach)

Construction began in 1863 under the auspices of Ignacio Mascaro.

The cemetery is located outside the walls of Fort San Felipe del Morro fortress, one of the island’s most famous landmarks. The average height of the wall is 40 feet and the width ranges from 15 to 20 feet.

It was named in honor of Saint Maria Magdalena de Pazzi.

Ricky Martin shocked the audience with an unexpected visit to Ellen, and talked to her about JetBlue’s Check in For Good contest, what it’s like being married, and being nominated for an Emmy for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story“.

Plus, Ellen and her friends at Shutterfly also had a big surprise for Ricky so he can continue his efforts to help rebuild Puerto Rico.

WE LIVE IN AMERICA

~POST HURRICANE MARIA~

As of today, midterm elections in the USA are 17 days off.

Many Puerto Ricans moved to the mainland after Hurricane María devastated the island.

Guess what?

As American citizens, Puerto Ricans have the right to vote in elections in the mainland.

I’m sure many won’t forget about the weak response to the devastation.

I, for one, can’t get the image of Drumpf throwing paper towels to those gathered the see him, expecting … what?

I vote!

I will never forget, I will never forgive!

PUERTO RICO’S CRISIS

There’s still a crisis in Puerto Rico and we can’t forget that.

It has become the second longest blackout ever.

Here’s a condensed version of Puerto Rico’s history by itself, with Spain and with he United States.

This video also takes us back to September 6, 2017, when Hurricane María destroyed Puerto Rico as we knew it.

Hurricane season is already under way.

Hurricane Beryl has formed and it’s too close for comfort.

Let the video speak for itself.

DON PEDRO ALBIZU CAMPOS …. “🇵🇷 On the American Flag 🇵🇷 …. “!!

RedLineB

Pedro Albizu Campos (September 12, 1891 – April 21, 1965) was a Puerto Rican attorney and politician, and the leading figure in the Puerto Rican independence movement. Gifted in languages, he spoke six. He graduated from Harvard Law School with the highest grade point average in his law class, an achievement that earned him the right to give the valedictorian speech at his graduation ceremony.

However, animus towards his mixed racial heritage would lead to his professors delaying two of his final exams in order to keep Albizu Campos from graduating on time. During his time at Harvard University he became involved in the Irish struggle for independence.

Albizu Campos was the president and spokesperson of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party from 1930 until his death in 1965. Because of his oratorical skill, he was hailed as ‘El Maestro‘ (The Teacher).

He was imprisoned twenty-six years for attempting to overthrow the United States government in Puerto Rico.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Puerto Rico is a colony of the mighty, imperialistic US of A.

The USA invaded the Island in 1898. It took over from the free authority of the people to impose their values and orders.

(Sounds familiar?)

In the process it used, abuse, stole, imposed views, subjugated individuals, incarcerated many and much more on the people of Puerto Rico.

The response generated after Hurricane María battered the Island shows the ‘heart‘ of the American governance.

It’s time for Puerto Rico to be on its own feet. It can’t be done overnight. It has to be a gradual process.

No one will come to save the Island.

The people will have to rise!

Need I say more?

I was in Puerto Rico last week.

I returned on Tuesday, May 29, that was the day when I became aware of the results of this study.

I knew this was true even after the first few days after Hurricane María battered the Island.

I will never forget or forgive the current American administration or the current Puerto Rican administration for the totally inadequate response to this disaster.

The conditions back home aren’t adequate still.

Uncle Sam, there’s Puerto Rican blood on your hands.

The mighty, imperialistic US of A doesn’t care about it’s colony.

The Puerto Rican government is as corrupt as the American one.

4,645 Puerto Ricans, (so far), paid the ultimate price!

Marlette received a priceless editorial cartoon education while living with his uncle and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Doug Marlette in Hillsborough, N.C. Doug’s tragic death in July of 2007 made evermore poignant the elder Marlette’s fierce and faithful devotion to the art form of editorial cartooning as a cornerstone of American free speech.

With this in mind, Andy works daily to learn and uphold the disciplines and values passed on to him by his late uncle. Andy’s editorial cartoons have become both hated and adored by daily readers.
