This is a huge crisis in Puerto Rico now.

The Island is financially broke.

The help it’s receiving from the “master” isn’t really helping.

It’s just setting the stage for continued pillage.

This may sound good but it really isn’t.

~House approves Puerto Rico debt-relief legislation~

The House on Thursday passed a bill that would create a financial control board to help Puerto Rico handle its finances, and let the island restructure some of its $70 billion in debt. The bipartisan 297-127 vote marked a victory for House Speaker Paul Ryan, who had urged conservative fellow Republicans to help pass the bill to keep the crisis from deepening.

Puerto Rico is due to make a $2 billion debt payment in three weeks.

“The Puerto Rican people are our fellow Americans,” Ryan said. “They pay our taxes, they fight in our wars. We cannot allow this to happen.”

This “JUNTA’S” real purpose is to make sure that the debtors are paid.

No real interest in the benefits of progress of Puerto Rico and it’s people.

Don’t be fooled!!

How Hedge Funds Deepen Puerto Rico’s Debt Crisis
Vulture investors have descended on the commonwealth, taking advantage of a debt crisis that has impoverished citizens and created massive unemployment.

By: David Dayen

In many ways, the Puerto Rico situation is sui generis, resulting from a patchwork of laws and obligations on an entity that is not really a country and not really a U.S. state. But looked at another way, Puerto Rico is just the latest battlefield for a phalanx of hedge funds called “vultures,” which pick at the withered sinews of troubled governments.

In Greece, Argentina, Detroit, and now Puerto Rico, vultures have bought distressed debt on the cheap, and then used coercion, threats, and legal action to secure a massive windfall, compounding the effects on millions of citizens.

The legal wrangling masks an irony: As creditors demand that Puerto Rico pay back everything it owes, hedge fund managers have used the island as a tax haven to avoid their own responsibilities. Wealthy investors don’t just want to make money in Puerto Rico; they want to use their leverage to effectively buy an island playground.

PUERTO RICO’S CURRENT REALITY

Schools in Puerto Rico have been closing down due to the debt crisis, but hedge fund managers like Mark Brodsky continue to take advantage of the situation. Urge elected officials to put the lives of Puerto Ricans above interests of hedge funds.

Sign the petition at http://bit.ly/puerto-rico-debt

TELL CONGRESS: “PROMESA” ONLY BREAKS PROMISES!

Puerto Rico needs action in Washington that respects local authority, fairly restructures the debt, puts people over hedge fund profits, and protects the environment.

We are counting on our elected officials to promote shared prosperity, not austerity for Puerto Rico.

At the end of the day …. “Let’s End Homeless Hate Laws”!!

HomeLMeme

~~June 17, 2015~~

Manteca, CA made it illegal to set up shelter anywhere outside – and even went as far as make it illegal to pick food or recyclables out of the trash!

Fort Lauderdale policed repeatedly cited 90-year-old Arnold Abbott for feeding hungry people in public. In Oahu, it is illegal to sit or lie in a number of public areas. These types of laws are common in cities throughout the United States, but do nothing to address the root causes of incarceration.

Diversion programs work better than incarceration – for everyone. In cities like Seattle, San Antonio, and Salt Lake City, we see that successful solutions are a viable option to help end serious social problems. These services alter the course of people’s lives in a positive way and save taxpayers huge amounts of money. We cannot continue to isolate and imprison people who suffer from mental illness, substance abuse, or homelessness. We must treat them with compassion and care to better serve our communities and our pocketbooks.

It’s time we got serious about pulling our money out of incarceration and putting it into systems that foster healthy communities. Hundreds of thousands of people are locked up not because of any dangerous behavior, but because of problems like mental illness, substance use disorders, and homelessness, which should be dealt with outside the criminal justice system. Services like drug treatment and affordable housing cost less and can have a better record of success.

This summer, news stories from around the nation provided the American people with a litany of issues about how police officers respond to community members. By highlighting programs like Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD), and Housing First, OverCriminalized explores the possibility of ending incarceration for millions of Americans who, through successful intervention programs, can put their lives back on track.

OverCriminalized focuses on the people who find themselves being trafficked through this nation’s criminal justice system with little regard for their humanity and zero prospects for actual justice.

They are victims of unwillingness to invest in solving major social problems, and the consequent handling off of that responsibility to the police, the courts, and the prisons. They are the mentally ill, the homeless, and the drug addicted. Sometimes they are all three.

Homeless Hate Laws are spreading throughout the country.

BLineHomeLessPBLine

Quick facts on over criminalization:

Approximately 20 % of state prisoners and 21 % of local jail detainees have a “recent history” of a mental health condition.

Approximately 26% of homeless adults staying in shelters live with serious mental illness and an estimated 46% live with severe mental illness and/or substance use disorders.

In 2012, it was estimated that 23.1 million Americans needed treatment for problems that related to drugs or alcohol.

Pew Research finds that 67% of Americans say that the government should focus more on providing treatment for those who use illegal drugs such as heroin or cocaine. Just 26% think the government’s focus should be on prosecuting users of such hard drugs.

Wrong About Iraq, Wrong About Iran
by Robert Greenwald

The framework agreement that the U.S. and its international partners reached with Iran that blocks Tehran’s pathways to building a nuclear bomb is several weeks old, yet the usual suspects have already denounced it as a “bad deal.”

Former George W. Bush administration official John Bolton called the agreement “a surrender of classic proportions,” and for Bolton, war is the only answer.

“The inconvenient truth is that only military action … can accomplish what is required,”

Bolton wrote in The New York Times last month.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes it too. “I think this is a bad deal,” hesaid on Sunday, adding, “I think there is still time to reach a good deal, a better deal.”

How do we get a “better deal”? Netanyahu doesn’t have an answer.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) also criticized the agreement on Sunday, but he went a bit further than Netanyahu. “I don’t want a war, but…,” Graham said. But what?

The South Carolina Republican said that Iran would have to completely capitulate and agree to dismantle its entire nuclear program and address other issues that weren’t part of the nuclear talks or face war.

Ir16BlackBor

What do Bolton, Netanyahu, Graham and a whole host of others in Washington opposing this deal have in common?

They were passionate supporters of the Iraq war and continue to hold that view today.

Here’s what Netanyahu told Congress in September 2002, five months before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq: “If you take out Saddam … I guarantee you that it will have enormous positive reverberations on the region.”

And here’s what the Israeli Prime Minister told Congress just last month: “The agreement … would all but guarantee that Iran gets nuclear weapons.”

Graham said in 2003 that Saddam Hussein “is lying … when he says he doesn’t have weapons of mass destruction.”

And here’s Bolton in late 2002: “The Iraqi people would be unique in history if they didn’t welcome the overthrow of this dictatorial regime.”

Of course, we all know how this played out: no WMDs, tens of thousands of Americans killed or wounded, countless Iraqi civilians dead, nearly $4 trillion spent, and ISIS on a rampage throughout the Middle East.

BlackBorIr13

Why should we listen to these people again?

The reality is that there is no better Iran deal, and those calling for one never offer a viable plan on how to get there. In fact, the real alternative is war, which will come at tremendous cost.

“After you’ve dropped those bombs on those hardened facilities, what happens next?” former commander of U.S. Central Command Gen. Anthony Zinni (Ret.) once wondered.

“If you follow this all the way down, eventually I’m putting boots on the ground somewhere. And like I tell my friends, if you like Iraq and Afghanistan, you’ll love Iran.”
