~~THE GIRLS HAVE DONE IT THEMSELVES~~

MAIDUGURI (July 7, 2014 (AFP) – More than 60 women and girls abducted last month by suspected Boko Haram militants in northeast Nigeria have escaped their captors, sources said Sunday, but more than 200 schoolgirls are still being held by the Islamists.

Local vigilante Abbas Gava said he had “received an alert from my colleagues … that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home” late Friday.

A high-level security source in the Borno state capital Maiduguri, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed the escape.

Gava, a senior official of the local vigilantes in Borno who are working closely with security officials, told journalists the women escaped when their captors went out to fight.

“They took the bold step when their abductors moved out to carry out an operation,” he said.

Clashes took place between the Islamists and the army late Friday after an attack by the insurgents in the town of Damboa, where 53 of them and six soldiers were killed, the army had said. The rebels attacked barracks and a police station while most of the troops were out on patrol in surrounding villages.

Spokesmen for the armed forces or the government could not be reached Sunday for comment on the latest developments in the kidnapping cases.

Activists of the Bring Back Our Girls movement meanwhile tried to march on the presidential palace in Abuja Sunday to pressure the government over the fate of more than 200 girls kidnapped in Chibok, in Borno, on April 14, but were asked by security forces to turn back.

“It’s 84 days today that the girls have been abducted,” activist Aisha Yesufu told the press. “We have been coming out for 68 days and nobody has really listened to us,” Yesufu told reporters after the march.

That is why the group “decided that we should just take the protest back to the president so that he will know that we are still out there after the 68 days that we have been coming out daily”.

Of the 276 girls seized in April, 57 have escaped while 219 are still missing.

Villagers from the town where Boko Haram abducted the girls appealed to the United Nations on Friday to intervene because of the worsening violence in their region.

The community claimed militants were running amok in their area, seemingly with impunity. A state of emergency imposed in Borno and neighbouring Yobe and Adamawa in May last year forced its fighters out of urban centres.

But that has come at the expense of protecting people in the countryside, where attacks have increased dramatically, almost on a daily basis, analysts say.

Amnesty International claimed in May that military commanders in Borno had advance warning of the Chibok abduction but could not muster enough troops to send.

The insurgents’ kidnap of the schoolgirls in April provoked international outrage and drew unprecedented global attention to the Islamist uprising.

Security experts say the overstretched and under-resourced military is incapable of waging an effective counterinsurgency against the Boko Haram militants, who have killed thousands in their five-year campaign for an independent Islamic state in the north.

SUNDER …. his new home!!

~~June 6, 2014~~

We are beyond delighted to report that the much-abused young elephant Sunder has arrived at his new home, Bannerghatta Biological Park, where he is to reside by order of the Supreme Court of India.

SunDWelcomSundH2SunderHome

Park officials have assured PETA that the entire 49.5-hectare forested area for elephants will be fenced in to allow the herd of 13 elephants – which Sunder will join once he has settled down and his serious leg wound caused by long-term painfully tight chaining has healed – to roam freely. Veterinary experts are working to address this wound.

Sunder has suffered greatly for years. He has been badly beaten and otherwise abused and so will need to be introduced gently to a different way of being handled, quarantined for health testing and loosely restrained as his injuries and health are assessed and as he comes to trust his new caretakers.

~~Here are some pictures of Sunder and of his new home~~

Sunder is already making himself at home at his new home

PETA continues to engage with elephant expert advisers in India and abroad in order to help with the transition. We have overcome immense hurdles – including unscrupulous behaviour, the deliberate dissemination of misinformation, attempts at religious blackmail, enormous pressure from sundry quarters, court battles and political corruption – during our efforts to rescue Sunder from the clutches of his physical abusers and mental tormentors.

We are ever so grateful to every single soul who found a way to help and who joined the #FreeSunder campaign, thereby becoming part of this joyful outcome. More than 220,000 people from around the world wrote to authorities seeking Sunder’s release through action alerts on PETA affiliates’ websites. Many celebrities – including Paul McCartneyAmitabh BachchanMadhuri DixitPamela AndersonArjun RampalR MadhavanGulshan Grover and others – took to Twitter or helped in other ways to keep the spotlight on this long campaign for Sunder’s release.

At one point, Maharashtra Minister of Forests Dr Patangrao Kadam and the Project Elephant division of the Ministry of Environment and Forests issued orders for Sunder’s release, but those orders were ignored. Senior Counsel Shiraz Rustomjee and Counsel Rohan Rajadhyaksha won for Sunder in the Bombay High Court. M/s K Ashar & Co Advocates & Solicitors were the advocates on record for PETA for the cases in the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court, and Senior Counsel Raj Panjwani won the case for Sunder in the Supreme Court.

We thank Suparna Ganguly of the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre for her support of the campaign and MP Maneka Gandhi, who helped us greatly by using her significant authority to end the stalling. We also thank Naresh Kadyan of OIPA for trying to bring Sunder’s abusers to justice.

SunWorld

We are also thankful to the Maharashtra Forest Department and numerous veterinary and other elephant experts for assisting with Sunder’s move to Bangalore, and to scientist Surendra Verma and animal behaviour consultant Margaret Whittaker for guiding us in other ways.

The elephant care centre at Bannerghatta Biological Park sits in a wonderful natural forest with ponds and streams and will serve as a safe refuge for Sunder. It also has the potential to develop into a world-class facility.

~~ABOUT PETA INDIA~~

OUR MISSION

PETA India, based in Mumbai, was launched in January 2000. PETA India operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on or use for entertainment, while educating policymakers and the public about animal abuse and promoting an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect.

PETA India focuses primarily on the areas in which the greatest numbers of animals suffer the most: in the food and leather industries, in laboratories and in the entertainment industry.

PETA India’s investigative work, public education efforts, research, animal rescues, legislative work, special events, celebrity involvement and national media coverage have resulted in countless improvements to the quality of life for animals and have saved countless animals’ lives.

~~AND REMEMBER~~

At the end of the day …. Peace!!!

~~May 12, 2014~~

At the end of the day, we look back at the events of the day.

We evaluate them as they transpired as well as the experiences we’ve had. We evaluate  how these have shaped our lives.

A main goal is reaching a state of peace with oneself, our world, our surroundings, our actions, our circle of family and friends.

~~PEACE~~

Peace is an occurrence of harmony characterized by the lack of violence, conflict behaviors and the freedom from fear of violence. Commonly understood as the absence of hostility and retribution, peace also suggests sincere attempts at reconciliation, the existence of healthy or newly healed interpersonal or international relationships, prosperity in matters of social or economic welfare, the establishment of equality, and a working political order that serves the true interests of all.

It’s something we make, something we do, something we are and something we give away.

Feel the loving warmth of peace engulfing all your body. Every process slows down, the frantic pace of daily living slows down. We areconnected with Source. We recharge the batteries as we sleep and we hope to start all over again.

Sure, it’s a repetitious cycle. That’s why we have another opportunity to try again tomorrow. Life continuously gives us the chance the learn the lesson and do better the next time around.

BPea

Erase the errors of yesterday, learn the lessons and make sure that you try your hardest and your best when the next opportunity swings by.

Let’s work out our differences, put and end to all the hate.
