Thoughts for today, #359 …. “Jenner …. you have a problem”!!

JENNER’S PROBLEM …. HILLARY’S RESPONSE

When the week began, longtime conservative Caitlyn Jenner was voicing her support for the republicans, while launching personal attacks at Hillary Clinton.

By the time the week ended, Jenner was posting a selfie she’d just taken with Clinton. It wasn’t a complete reversal of Jenner’s position, but it was a remarkably quick softening of her views.

For all the talk of Hillary Clinton not being a naturally gifted politician in front of the cameras, the incident revealed just how adept she is behind the scenes – and how little she cares about getting her feelings hurt.

GoldSwirlJenGoldSwirl

Hillary quickly seized on what many of us had recognized: Caitlyn Jenner is in a tricky position.

She still holds many of the same conservative republican views that she always has. But now that she’s become one of the de facto faces of the LGBT movement, she’s struggling with the fact that most of her own party leaders hold distinctly anti-LGBT views.

She’s also facing backlash from the LGBT community, and from her fellow transgender people, for trying to cling to her longtime conservative beliefs.

That means Hillary was in a position to help out Caitlyn while helping herself.

WE ALL KNOW THEM

Britney Spears, Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Caitlyn Jenner, Ted Cruz

It’s all in good fun … yet, there’s always truth in jest.

I found this meme surfing through my Facebook Timeline.

I kept looking at it and looking at it.

I couldn’t really decide which one.

To tell you the truth I still don’t know.

Some I wouldn’t even consider.

Others …. they rank almost at the same level.

Until someone posted the graph posted below in the tread.

Can you make a choice?

CHANGE OF HEART

Caitlyn Jenner SUPPORTS gay marriage just weeks after awkward exchange with Ellen DeGeneres

CAITLYN JENNER DESCRIBES HERSELF AS A TRADITIONALIST

BLine

The 65-year-old came to blows with TV host Ellen DeGeneres a couple of weeks ago regarding her opinion on the matter.

During the tense interview Cait – who has recently transitioned – said she didn’t really “get” same sex marriage.

But after some time to contemplate her stance she revealed how she now feels in her latest blog post, written to mark the end of the first series of her show.

She wrote: “I want to help each of you understand something that I only recently embraced: Being different is okay – in fact, it’s great! But I also understand it takes some getting used to.”

BLine

“Like many people, there was a time when I didn’t realize how important it is for gay couples to have the right to get married,” she confessed.

“But after hearing from my gay friends and learning more about the hardships they faced because of discrimination, it became clear to me that everyone should be able to marry the person they love.

“I can only hope that by sharing my story, there’s someone out there whose mind has been changed about trans people.”

Ellen and Cait enjoyed a rather awkward exchange regarding the issue a couple of weeks ago when the TV presenter brought up that Caitlyn had previously identified as a conservative republican.

I must confess that I watched the complete first season of “I Am Cait”.

This isn’t the usual type of show that I watch.

The only reality shows that I watch are “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race”.

The reason that I watched “Cait” is because I didn’t want anyone judge the show by what others told me.

I wanted to make my own opinions based on what I saw.

I think there’s a duality in all of this for me.

I feel for Caitlyn as she goes throw her transformation in such a public manner.

Yet, at the same time, I still feel some superficiality in all of it.

Sometimes it pains me to watch some of the episodes.

As a member of the LGBT community, I was looking forward to see what kind of message she would bring to the forefront.

I wondered if she would help or hinder the movement for visibility and equality in the trans community.

I’m still “on the fence” about this.

I don’t know yet it this is really the person best fitted to represent the transgender community.

As noted above, her views don’t  coincide with the usual LGBT positions.

I guess we will still have to wait.

In the meantime, the show has been renewed for a second season.

I wonder where it all will take us.

Mr. Peter Berg …. “Petty, petty … how petty thou art”!!

~~July 17, 2015~~

Director Peter Berg Slams Caitlyn Jenner’s ESPYs Award

While Caitlyn Jenner’s acceptance of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at Wednesday night’s ESPYs drew cheers from the crowd, “Friday Night Lights” creator Peter Berg was evidently jeering.

The “Lone Survivor” director shared a meme on Instagram, circulated by the Facebook account Main Stream Media Sponsor Boycotts, slamming Jenner’s Arthur Ashe Courage Award win. The image contains side-by-side photos of Jenner and U.S. Army veteran Gregory D. Gadson.

“One man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs. Guess which man made the cover of Vanity Fair, was praised for his courage by President Obama and is to be honored with the ‘Arthur Ashe Courage Award’ by ESPN?” the text read.

“Yup,” Berg captioned his post, simply.

Jenner, who won the gold medal in the men’s decathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics, delivered a stirring speech at last night’s awards ceremony on ABC in which she preached “accepting people for who they are.”

“Trans people deserve something vital,” she said. “They deserve your respect.

And from that respect, comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society and a better world for all of us.”

Let me put in my two cents, if you don’t mind.

“IMHO”

(in my humble opinion)

~Definition of courage~

NOUN
the ability to do something that frightens one:
“she called on all her courage to face the ordeal”

BLine

I am no die hard Jenner fan.

However, I am a proud member of the LGBTQ community. I also worked as a primary care physician for the Veterans Administration for 27 years. I’ve seen first hand the ravages of war and the long lasting effects on the Americans who serve in the military forces – whichever military branch they choose.

I treated veterans from WWI, Korea, WWII, Vietnam, Granada, Iraq and Afghanistan … and many other conflicts as well as peacetime.

On one hand, without any intention of putting any soldier down or demeaning their actions and valor, aside from any who was drafted (which hasn’t happened since Vietnam), and with all the respect that they are due, each and every one of the individuals who serve in the military chose to do so.

All individuals making any kind of choice, need to be aware of the consequences of said choice.

This is a fact that applies to anyone making any kind of decision.

Those who choose to join the military are educated in their new field, trained, supervised and provided with all the necessary means that their job requires. They are led by supervisors, superiors. They have their plans laid out for them. There are “maps” and guidelines to follow along the way. Protocols are set in place and there are manuals which explain how to make any decision and the possible interventions, outcomes and management of resulting situations.

I do not know the details of U.S. Army veteran Gregory D. Gadson participation in the military. I can seen that he gave up a lot while serving this country.

However, I feel comfortable in saying that this soldier chose to join the military … and must have known the possible consequences of that choice.

I’m sure he is one of the best trained soldiers in the military.

This country’s soldiers are now considered heroes. They are honored (after the Vietnam lesson was learned). They are supported, respected, celebrated, honored and valued.

They aren’t shunned, ignored, insulted, abused, ridiculed, assaulted, killed, dismembered or submitted to hate crimes.

BLine

What is the military?

In simple terms, the U.S. Armed Forces are made up of the five armed service branches: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. There are three general categories of military people: active duty (full-time soldiers and sailors), reserve & guard forces (usually work a civilian job, but can be called to full-time military duty), and veterans and retirees (past members of the military). And of course there are the millions of family members and friends of military members, past and present. But you’re here to learn more about the military. There is much to learn! So first the basics. Exactly who is in charge?

The President of the United States is the Commander in Chief, who is responsible for all final decisions. The Secretary of the Department of Defense (DoD) has control over the military and each branch – except the Coast Guard, which is under the Dept. of Homeland Security. With over 2 million civilian and military employees, the DoD is the world’s largest “company.”

Each branch of the military has a unique mission within the overall mission of U.S. security and peace.

On the other hand, Bruce Jenner came into this world as a boy 65 years ago. He was born in 1950.

Can you begin to imagine the social climate that he was born into?

He didn’t have a map. He didn’t have a supervisor or superior telling him what to do. He had no plan, he had no protocols. He had no one to go to. He was on his own.

I’m sure that many a’times, he felt that he was the only one in the world who felt like he did.

Bruce Jenner didn’t chose to be transgender; he was born that way. He didn’t have role models.

He was making his own journey … blindly.

He must have run into plenty of obstacles and he was definitely trying to fit in the category that society had for him.

And that he did that very well …. he was a man’s man. He won the gold medal in the men’s decathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

He was married several times. He procreated. He tried to do what was expected of him in his role as a very public man, an incredible athlete.

Yet, he knew this wasn’t him …..

Caitlyn Jenner admitted her transition was ”harder than she imagined”.

BLine

She said: ”This transition has been harder on me than anything I could have imagined.

”And that’s the case for so many others besides me. For that reason alone, trans people deserve something vital.

They deserve your respect.

”And from that respect comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society, and a better world for all of us.”

She shared: ”It’s not just about one person, it’s about thousands of people. It’s not just about me. It’s about all of us accepting one another.

We’re all different. That’s not a bad thing. That’s a good thing.

”And while it may not be easy to get past the things you always don’t understand, I want to prove that it is absolutely possible if we only do it together.”

BLine

I’m sure she has experienced all of this.

She has been shunned, ignored, insulted, abused, ridiculed and “assaulted” by the media and many others like you, Mr. Berg. Show some compassion, empathy. Show some acceptance.

And if you can’t, that’s OK.

Definition of courage: the ability to do something that frightens one.

These are different types of courage. You are comparing apples to oranges.

You may look better, to those who have a heart and practice compassion, though, if you keep it to yourself.

History of violence against LGBTQI people in the United States

The history of violence against LGBT people in the United States is made up of assaults on gay men, lesbians, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex individuals (LGBTQI), legal responses to such violence, and hate crime statistics in the United States of America.

Those targeted by such violence are perceived to violate heteronormative rules and contravene perceived protocols of gender and sexual roles. People who are perceived to be LGBTQI may also be targeted.

A hate crime is simply defined as when individuals become victimized because of their race, ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Hate crimes against LGBTQI people often occur because the perpetrators are homophobic. Violence targeted at people because of their perceived sexuality can be psychological and physical up to and including murder. These actions may be caused by cultural, religious, or political mores and biases.

Caitlyn Jenner Gives Poignant Speech at ESPYS

Jenner was this year’s recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, named for the African American tennis star who died of AIDS in 1993.

BLine

Trans People Deserve Your Respect

Caitlyn Jenner accepted her first formal award on Wednesday since announcing her transition, receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS and giving an emotional speech in the process.

“The real truth is that before just a few months ago, I had never met anybody else who was trans,” she said. “Now as you saw, I dealt with my situation on my own, in private. It’s been eye-opening, inspiring, but also frightening.”

She went on to talk about trans youth, mentioning late trans teenagers Mercedes Williamson and Sam Taub.

“They’re getting bullied,” Jenner said of trans youth. “They’re getting beaten up. They’re getting murdered.

And they’re committing suicide.”

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS ISSUE

I must truthfully say that I didn’t think that I would be looking for information, reviewing and listening to Jenner’s acceptance speech at the ESPY’s.

I remember, back in 1976, when Jenner was the darling of the media because of his incredible feat in the Olympics and winning the Olympic decathlon men’s event champion.

Throughout all of her journey, even before she announced what she intended to, I never followed her as an American television personality. I did watch the Diane Sawyer interview where Jenner described what he had gone through all his life, her “confusion, her living up to someone she wasn’t’.

It all seemed so phony and fake to me. I wasn’t thrilled like some seemed to be. I wondered what she could bring to the table in the current situation of the trans community, the “T” in LGBTQ. I even thought this may be damaging to the advances that have been made in the acceptance of the LGBTQ community and the monumental decision of SCOTUS in making marriage equality the “law of the land”.

Some of you may be confused, since some may know that I am a proud member of the LGBTQ community, recently married and now recognized as married nationwide, that I’m not offering unconditional support to Jenner.

I watched Caitlyn Jenner’s acceptance speech at the ESPYS last night.  I must say that I’m still somewhat “leery” of her intentions but I must also say that her acceptance speech was powerful, intense, heartwarming and very touching. She’s setting quite an agenda for herself.

For the sake of the LGBTQ community and for Caitlyn Jenner’s sake, I do hope that this is all real, not any kind of publicity stunt or attention seeking action. I don’t think that anyone would go through all of the jeering, abuse, anguish, medical and surgical treatment that she has gone through for publicity’s sake.

I truly got a better glimpse of her and I hope and wish only the best for her at this stage of her life.
