Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto (born February 25, 1963) is an American politician who is the current mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Cruz is affiliated with the Popular Democratic Party.

I have to confess that I didn’t know anything about this woman.

The first time I heard about her was during those terrible days after Hurricane María battered my country. I live in the mainland. I’ve been away from home since 1999.

She became the voice for those in the diaspora as we hungered for news about our country.

To this day you will hear negative comments about her.

She didn’t do her job, she took advantage of the situation to benefit her own political ambitions, she forgot about the people of San Juan, she’s posing because she wants to run for governor, she’s a socialist, she aligns herself with Puerto Rico’s independence while pretending to be a member of the Partido Popular Democrático, etc., etc.

I don’t care what they say about her, I don’t care what they think … to me, she became that voice that we desperately needed to hear.

She’s the only political official who has stood up to Drumpf and his administration. 

I was hungry for news about the Island after the devastating hurricane

 I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. I lived there all my life. I lived through many hurricanes, not María, of course. I know the landscape of my country. I know how the towns in the central part of the island were affected without me being there. I know, without being there, how the medical needs couldn’t be addressed because of lack of power. I knew 16, 64 deaths were not correct. There are at least 11 refrigerated vans at the forensic facility containing bodies … the capacity to conduct autopsies and eventual identification has been overwhelmed.

I have family and friends who were without power for 11 months. When communication was possible, I finally was able to get in touch with them. I sent care packages to them including the most basic items that we generally take for granted. I already went back to see.

By the time I returned, there was a semblance of recovery.

Yes, power is restored … not totally. And it’s still very fragile.

Power outings for hours and days at a time are commonplace.

Politics in Puerto Rico is ‘the national sport’. 

My political ideology related to Puerto Rico has gone through a gamut of feelings, ideas and a new conviction. The relationship with the United States is difficult to define.

I think it depends who you hear it from.

San Juan mayor says the Drumpf administration killed thousands through neglect during Hurricane María

The Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, said Wednesday, August 29, that bureaucracy and inefficiency across local and federal government entities are to blame for the deaths of nearly 3,000 on the island in the wake of Hurricane María, which came to light as part of a newly released study commissioned by the Puerto Rican government.
In particular, Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz blamed Drumpf, federal officials and Puerto Rican officials for not providing more assistance in what the Puerto Rican government now acknowledges was a storm deadlier than Hurricane Katrina.

“You know, everybody is responsible because there were people in power that had the opportunity to request more aid, to request more aid when it was reasonable, to request more aid when it was needed, to tell the truth and they didn’t,”

Yulín Cruz told CNN “New Day” host Alisyn Camerota.

“It’s 2,975 people and they’re still calling it an estimate – 2,975 people that will never see the light of day and many of them died because of what was done by the administration and that was silently approved by most of the political class in Puerto Rico.”

In October 2018, in the course of claiming credit for a successful response, Drumpf decided to favorably compare the official death toll in Puerto Rico, which was then 16, to the death toll after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, which was 1,833.

DRUMPF: We’ve saved a lot of lives. If you look at the – every death is a horror. But if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina, and you look at the tremendous – hundred and hundred and hundreds of people that died. And you look at what happened here with really a storm that was totally overpowering. Nobody’s ever seen anything like this. And what is your death count at this point, 17?

PUERTO RICO GOV. RICARDO ROSSELLÓ: Sixteen, certified.

DRUMPF: Sixteen people, certified – 16 people versus in the thousands. You can be very proud of all of your people, all of our people working together.
“Sixteen versus literally thousands of people.”

The count now, according to Harvard, is 4,645 vs. 1,833.

More than twice as many people died because of Maria than Katrina, per the Harvard study.

Puerto Rico governor welcomes “real number” of Hurricane María deaths after shocking report

A new Harvard University study says the death toll from Hurricane María last year is dramatically larger than reported. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, estimates more than 4,600 people died on the island.

The official government death toll is just 64.

Researchers randomly knocked on doors and asked if anyone died there. There were more questions – but that’s how it started.

It took six weeks and $50,000 from Harvard to come up with a number that is stunning, reports CBS News’ David Begnaud.

“The negligence that allowed those lives to be lost, needs to be accounted for,” San Juan mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said.

Cruz has blasted Drumpf for being tone deaf and slow to respond. When asked to evaluate her own response she said,

“I know I didn’t get to everyone. We did the best we could, but that wasn’t’ good enough. That wasn’t good enough.”

Why this story is more than just a shocking number?

For every death that is certified by a government official to be related to Hurricane María, family members are eligible to have the federal government help pay for funeral expenses.

The numbers matter.

The first images I saw from my country, after the hurricane, showed her working, wading through flood waters, calling on her constituents. Since then, I’ve heard people disparage her real intent. Yet, to me, she has been to voice for my country. She keeps the spotlight on the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico. Will she benefit from this?

I don’t know and I don’t care … as long as Puerto Rico’s crisis remains in the forefront rather than a back burner.

It’s been two months since Hurricane María all but destroyed much of Puerto Rico. And it’s been more than a month or so since most late-night comics ran out of material about Drumpf blaming these American citizens for their own misfortune, whipping paper towels at them like he was trying to win a stuffed animal at the fair, and his administration awarding a sweetheart deal to a tiny energy firm with no experience and two full-time employees that just so happened to be from the hometown of Drumpf’s Interior Secretary and financed by a major Drumpf donor to fix the island’s power grid.

Stephen Colbert took some time on Wednesday’s Late Show, November 29, to let San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz both thank the American people for their continued help and goodwill in the disaster’s aftermath, and to use her time there to continue her criticism of Trump’s characteristic lack of both.

“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” inducted San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz into its “Trump Attacked Me On Twitter” Hall of Fame on Wednesday night, November 29,
Cruz was bestowed the honor following her feud with President Donald Trump, which began when she criticized the federal response to Hurricane Maria’s destruction in Puerto Rico.
In accepting the award, Cruz continued with her criticism of Trump.

She called him a “bully” and mocked his almost daily Twitter meltdowns.
“That gentleman that took the Twitter account for 11 minutes should be nominated to the Nobel Peace Prize,” said Cruz.

“I hope he’s a better golf player than he is a president, because he surely isn’t a good president,” she added.

Cruz noted that being attacked by the president was “a badge of courage” because it meant she was “different to him” and actually cared about people.

“So-called President’ Drumpf declared his response to the brutal hurricanes in Puerto Rico a “10 out of 10,” so Jordan Klepper at Comedy Central’s The Opposition flew down to the island with purportedly high hopes.

Klepper mostly kept up his faux-alt-rightish character in his interview with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz and other Puerto Ricans, but he declared Drumpf’s recovery effort a sub-par 6.5 (“if you round up, that’s a 10, baby!”), given the huge numbers of people without power, phone service, drinking water, shelter, or working schools.

Still, he found the upside in this federal dereliction.

“I think I’m starting to put it together,” Klepper said. “When Drumpf said it was a 10, he wasn’t talking about his response, he was talking about the response he inspired. See, he’s always thinking a couple of steps ahead, so many steps, often, he’s behind. Something I like to call ‘trickle-down responsibility’ – people in the community, well then they’re the ones who step up, they come together and they fix the problems, they move forward as a people and thus become that much more united.

And we all know, Drumpf, he’s a uniter.” After awarding perfect 10’s to Puerto Ricans doing it for themselves, Klepper also brought back a gift for Drumpf himself.

Maybe Drumpf should accept him (or her).

I feel just like Lin-Manuel.

The American government has totally failed the 3.4+ millions of American citizens who will in this possession/colony/territory of the mighty, imperialistic U.S. of A.
