EMERGING EPIDEMIC

This isn’t anything new.

It’s been the reality of many American families, kept in secret for the stigma it brings.

Losing well known personalities to this addiction should bring the topic to the forefront for further discussion.

Recognizing this as a medical condition is mandatory.

Treatment should be available, not only to well known personalities but also to the common “Joe“.

Big Pharma seems to be working to make a fortune on treatment for this condition.

This should be stopped.

American citizens need help not secrecy, price gouging or stigmatization.

Prince, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Heath Ledger all died from opioid overdoses

Toxicology results are in.

Prince died from an opioid overdose. He became just one of thousands of Americans who have fallen victim to prescription painkillers. Since 1999, the number of opioid-related deaths have nearly quadrupled.

Opioids – whether prescription painkillers or heroin – reduce the perception of pain and create feelings of pleasure. They are highly addictive. Over time, the body’s opioid receptors become accustomed to the drug; users may need to take a higher dose to get the same euphoric feelings and stave off withdrawal. When taken in excess, opioids can kill users by depressing their ability to breathe.

And as the Boston Globe reports, the United States is dealing with two inter-related drug abuse epidemics: One for prescription pills, and one for heroin.

FENTANYL PATCH

As I physician, when I was actively practicing, this was a medication that was very limited and totally controlled.

It was used as a last resort, for patients in extreme pain, usually terminal cancer patients.

It was never  the first drug of choice for pain.

I’m sure that, during the days to come, much more info will be learned about this medications, it’s uses and effects.

Fentanyl patch is a narcotic pain medicine that may become habit-forming. Misuse or abuse by placing it in the mouth or chewing, swallowing, injecting, or snorting it can lead to overdose and death. Do not use more than the recommended dose, use for longer than prescribed, or use more often than prescribed without checking with your doctor.

OPIOID OVERDOSE

Prince died of accidental overdose of opioid fentanyl

Now we know.

Does is really matter?

Does it make any difference?

Prince is still gone and he won’t return any time soon.

His musical gemius can’t be denied.

His musical legacy will remain till the end of times.

Many are discovering him now after his passing.

Many grew up with his music.

The imprint left won’t be diminished because of the cause of death.

If anything,  the love and feelings for him continue to grow.

We know that, in spite of his inner demons, he still produced and performed works of art.

He wanted to help the world and his fellow human beings.

Go, rest in peace …. Oh, Purple One!

Toxicology tests for Prince concluded that the entertainer died from an accidental overdose of the opioid fentanyl, according to a report on his death by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

Fentanyl, prescribed by doctors for cancer treatment, can be made illicitly and is blamed for a spike in overdose deaths in the United States. It’s 25 to 50 times more potent than heroin and 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Prince, whose full name was Prince Rogers Nelson, died April 21 at age 57, after being found unresponsive in an elevator at Paisley Park, his home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
