National Coming Out Day …. that time again in October!!

~~October 11, 2014~~

National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is an annual civil awareness day internationally observed on October 11 to recognize members of the LGBTQ+ community. The process of coming out involves self-disclosure of one’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

National Coming Out Day was founded by Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary on October 11, 1988 in celebration of the second gay march in Washington D.C. a year earlier. The purpose of the march and of National Coming Out Day is to promote awareness of gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender issues and to celebrate being LGBTQ.

Although National Coming Out Day is a time to celebrate gay pride, many choose this day to come out to their parents, friends, co-workers and themselves.

What does it mean to “come out”?

Coming out is the process of personally accepting your homosexuality and disclosing it to family, co-workers and friends. Coming out is different for every gay or bisexual person. Some experience a lot of pain and anguish while for others acceptance is a joyous time. It’s perfectly normal to experience fear, doubt, loneliness, anger and even depression.

Try to surround yourself with others that may be going through the same transition or who have already come out. They can be a great support network. If you don’t have any gay friends or don’t know anyone else coming out, there are discussion forums that have plenty of positive influences.

~~August 18, 2014~~

We lose people in our lives so many times. The circumstances to each are different but it still hurts the same.

They can be family members, friends (real life and cyberland), lovers, companions, co-workers, associates, neighbors, educators, mentors, people we admire and people we look up to.

The circumstances to these loses are all different. As different as the components of the “relationship” may be. We may lose those close to us due to arguments, disagreements, misunderstanding, physical distances, different geographical locations, health issues and  something as final as death.

There are times when we feel all alone in this huge universe. There are times when all we need is a helping hand and a sympathetic ear.

To my true friends out there, please know, I’m here …. and I won’t let you go!!

I watched a movie this weekend: Divergent and heard this song for the first time. I found a deep meaning in the lyrics. The song applies deeply to the movie line but I think that it applies to the many situations that we encounter in life.
