A Puerto Rican Moment …. “It Happens …. Captivating Puerto Rican Minds …. “!!

~~September 24, 2016~~

La Borinqueña is a fictional character created by writer/artist Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez officially endorsed by the National Puerto Rican Day Parade.

La Borinqueña is an original character created by graphic novelist Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez which debuted at the 59th Annual National Puerto Rican Day Parade.

The first full-length issue is in production under Somos Arte.

La Borinqueña is a patriotic symbol presented in a classic superhero story.

Her powers are drawn from elements and mysticism found on the island of Puerto Rico. The fictional character, Marisol Rios De La Luz, is a Columbia University Earth and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate student living with her parents Flor De La Luz Rojas and Oscar ‘Chango’ Rios Velez in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

She takes a semester of study abroad in collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico.

There she explores the caves of Puerto Rico: Ventana, La Cueva del Indio, Las Cuevas de Camuy, La Cueva del Viento and the caves at the Julio Enrique Monagas National Park.

At each of these caves she finds five similar sized crystals.

Atabex, the Taino mother goddess, appears before Marisol once the crystals are united and summons her sons Yúcahu and Juracan.

Yúcahu, God of the seas and the mountains gives Marisol her superhuman strength.

Juracan, god of the hurricanes gives her the power of flight and control of the wind.

La Borinqueña #1 will debut December 17 and 18, 2016 at the Comic Fest (Aguada Con) 2016 in Puerto Rico.

A Puerto Rican Moment …. “It Happens …. “Boricua Groot …. Guardians of the Galaxy …. “!!

~~September 15, 2016~~

This is one of my favorite movies ever.

I saw it with my oldest grand-daughter and we had  a blast.

The soundtrack was a compilation of major memories of musical hits.

I didn’t know we had a Puerto Rican Groot …

here he is!

The Guardians of the Galaxy are a fictional superhero team that has starred in the comic book series of the same name, published by Marvel Comics.

The original team, based in an alternate universe within the Marvel Comics continuity, debuted in the comic book Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (Jan. 1969).

Groot is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Dick Ayers, the character first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13, (November 1960).

An extraterrestrial, sentient tree-like creature, Groot originally appeared as an invader that intended to capture humans for experimentation.

A Puerto Rican Moment …. “It Happens …. Puerto Rican Super Hero: La Borinqueña … “!!

~~May 14, 2016~~

As Puerto Rican superhero makes debut, her writer brings ‘the power of our people’ to comics

THE ART OF collaboration was instilled in Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez at an early age, when making the classic Latin American dish pasteles with his grandmother.

“No Puerto Rican can think of their heritage and the island from which it comes from and not start thinking about the current financial crisis plaguing Puerto Rico,” Miranda-Rodriguez said.

The comics creator decided that his hero wasn’t going to be a crimefighter per se, but instead a symbol of Puerto Rico who could shine a light on issues that Miranda-Rodriguez felt should be on the minds of all Puerto Ricans.

Thus, La Borinqueña was born.

Inspired by the Puerto Rican national anthem of the same name, the superhero La Borinqueña — a woman named Marisol Rios De La Luz, wearing a costume inspired by the Puerto Rican flag — will make her debut this summer at the Puerto Rican Day Parade. She also will be featured in a comic book to be printed in the fall during an event organized by Miranda-Rodriguez called Café Con Comics (“Coffee With Comics”); it will be held at the CUNY East Harlem campus building in a historically Puerto Rican neighborhood.
