For the Oct. 15, 2018, TIME cover on the impact of Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony and the significance of her voice, we used Ford’s words to create her portrait.
As Haley Sweetland Edwards writes in the accompanying story, “the moment Dr. Christine Blasey Ford walked into the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, raised her right hand and swore to tell the truth, it was clear to millions of Americans that something momentous was about to unfold.”
Using words and phrases from Ford’s testimony, San Francisco-based artist John Mavroudis recreated her likeness by drawing each letter by hand.
“This particular process is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together, but with an infinite number of possibilities,” says Mavroudis.
“I started with an image of Ford and then drew the words in where they might be appropriate.”
“The memory quotes would be attached to her forehead area, and the quotes about wanting to help I placed on her hand. The hand could be seen as welcoming, but also deflecting,” Mavroudis said.
“It’s a fascinating process to watch the face take shape, while hoping that you’ve captured the essence.”

Prince Harry played a key role in designing Meghan Markle’s wedding bouquet
According to Kensington Palace, the groom himself picked flowers to be including himself on the day before the wedding.
“The spring blooms include Forget-Me-Nots which were Diana, Princess of Wales’ favorite flower.
The couple specifically chose them to be included in Ms. Markle’s bouquet to honor the memory of the late Princess on this special day.”

Hail to the chief: cyclist gives Drumpf the middle finger
The ‘so-called president’ of the United States is used to being saluted but a cyclist in Virginia put her own particular slant on the tradition on Saturday when she was overtaken by Drumpf’s motorcade.
The woman on her bike was photographed raising her middle finger when Drumpf’s vehicles passed her on their way out from the Drumpf National Golf Club on the banks of the Potomac river, on the outskirts of Washington DC.
She repeated the gesture when she caught up with the motorcade.
As noted in the White House pool report, “POTUS’s motorcade departed the Drumpf National Golf Club at 3:12 PM, passing two pedestrians, one of whom gave a thumbs-down sign.
Then it overtook a female cyclist, wearing a white top and cycling helmet, who responded by giving the middle finger.
“The motorcade had to slow and the cyclist caught up, still offering the finger, before turning off in a different direction.
Motorcade is now gathering speed and heading for DC.”
Social media users responded to the image of the cyclist with messages such as “Heroine!” and “Her2020”.

A neighborhood in Puerto Rico that became the setting of the most-streamed video of all time has been destroyed by Hurricane Maria.
La Perla, which is a stretch of shanty town along the Atlantic coastline of the city of San Juan, was the filming location for the music video of Despacito, 2017’s song of the summer. Starring the song’s creators, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and rapper Daddy Yankee, the video showed day turning to night in La Perla as a woman danced with locals and, later, in a club, and has been viewed more than 3.7 billion times.

SPEAKING ENGLISH AND ANOTHER LANGUAGE
It seems that some Americans have a problem with people speaking another language besides English.
Somehow the idea that it is more helpful, not to say, a sign of higher educational level,
speaking a language besides English, in some areas in America, may be looked totally insulting.
I speak from personal experience.
I worked with the federal government for many years. I moved to Florida in 1999 and experienced this fact. Folks I worked with minded the times I spoke in Spanish, my main language.
Being fluent in both, I had to mispronounce my name so that Americans understood it.
It’s still the case to this day!
