DISNEY NIGHT

“YOU’RE WELCOME”

It was Disney Night on Monday, October 16, Dancing With the Stars and Jordan Fisher brought some real Disney magic to the dance floor, earning the first perfect score of the season!

Fisher – a former Disney Channel star himself – couldn’t have been more excited to hit the stage with his pro partner, Lindsay Arnold, for an foxtrot set to Fisher’s own version of the song “You’re Welcome,” from the Moana soundtrack.
The Polynesian-themed dance, complete with palm trees surrounding the stage, was a perfect showcase for Fisher’s talent and Arnold’s stunning choreography.

One of the most impressive aspects of the song came during Lin-Manuel Miranda’s verse, during which Jordan and Arnold added modern dance elements to what had been a largely traditional foxtrot, giving it a unique twist.

LOVE IS LOVE

Of course, you know that I’m partial to this ad.

As I’m researching to write about it, I’ve seen that it’s already raising issues and some are claiming for boycotts.

Others have shown their support for the ad on social media.

A new, gay-friendly McDonald’s McCafé ad in Taiwan has predictably stirred up opposition from local religious groups, who are demanding a boycott.

Why does this have to be the case?

Let people be who they are, let people love who they love, let people sleep who they want to sleep with.

There’s no reason for judgement.

It only shows the pettiness they possess and the small brain they have.

LGBT-Friendly McDonald’s Ad

In the 90-second McCafé commercial, the subject’s father apparently rejects his son’s homosexual revelation, pounding a fist on the table and quickly exiting the scene, leaving the boy alone and downtrodden.

On the table there is a cup of coffee on which the son has scribbled “I like boys,” as translated by the China news site Shanghaiist.

Eventually, the father returns with a cup of coffee of his own. He then takes the boy’s cup in his hands and jots a few more characters on the exterior, changing the written statement to say,

“I accept that you like boys.”

Cue schmaltzy violin and piano tunes.

The ad, by Leo Burnett, shows a boy coming out to his father by writing it on a McCafé cup – and his father seeming to react poorly, at least at first.

(Because until Denny’s expands to Taiwan, McCafé has to be the place where people have difficult talks.)

At the end of the day …. The Piano Guys Series, second CD #10!!

~~May 5, 2014~~

The Piano Guys are an American musical group consisting of Jon SchmidtSteven Sharp Nelson, Paul Anderson, and Al van der Beek.

They gained popularity through YouTube, where they posted piano and cello renditions of popular songs and classical music. Schmidt and Nelson’s music is accompanied by professional-quality videos shot and edited by Paul Anderson.

Paul Anderson owned a piano shop in St. George, Utah. He met musician Jon Schmidt as the latter walked in to ask if he could practice there for an upcoming concert. Months later, Paul Anderson and Tel Stewart (then just for fun) started making videos together with Jon Schmidt. It was not too long after that they did their first collaboration with Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, and Al Van Der Beek as the studio and music technician. After the five of them started collaborating the group really started to take off, producing a music video each week and posting it to YouTube.

~~Success~~

Several of the group’s YouTube videos have over 20 million views, while all of them have over 750,000. As of February 2014, The Piano Guys’ YouTube channel has over 345 million total video views and about 2,500,000 subscribers.

“OUR VISION IS TO CREATE MUSIC AND VIDEOS THAT INSPIRE & UPLIFT.
WHATEVER WE DO, WE PUT OUR HEART AND SOULS INTO EVERY NOTE AND FRAME.”

The Piano Guys 2 is the third studio album by American musical group The Piano Guys. It was released on May 7, 2013, by Portrait (a division of Sony Masterworks). The album made its chart début at number 38 on the US Billboard 200.

The deluxe version of The Piano Guys 2 comes with a DVD featuring 11 music videos.

Today we are featuring “Me and my Cello – Happy Together” from their second CD with a major record label.

Steven Sharp Nelson (born 1977) is a pioneer in “cello-percussion”—an alternative performance method that combines traditional, lyrical cello techniques with unconventional pizzicato and percussive technique. He was born and still resides in Salt Lake City, Utah. He began studying cello at age 8, percussion at age 12 and guitar at age 17. He has invented a new method of playing the cello that combines elements learned from each of these instruments.

Nelson’s true cello career began when he was 15. He was recruited by Peter Breinholt to arrange string parts and perform with Breinholt’s band, Big Parade. Since then he has recorded on over 100 different albums ranging from folk & bluegrass to hip hop.

He has also made his way as a solo artist. His first album Sacred Cello (2006) was atop the Billboard Charts. He has since two more solo albums that have also received significant acclaim (Tender Mercies, 2008 and Christmas Cello, 2010).

~~Published on Mar 30, 2012~~

Many people ask why Steve is SO HAPPY when he plays the cello. We followed him around with our cameras on his day off. We think we now understand why.

**NO INSTRUMENTS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO**

We used a “stunt” cello for these scenes just in case — and we were really careful out of respect for the instrument. After all the filming, “Jackie” (named after Jackie Chan since he does all his own stunts) only had one minor scratch inflicted by a shopping cart (this proves the saying that statistically there are more shopping cart accidents than sky diving accidents).

~~Story behind the song~~
This music video was one of our very first ideas as ThePianoGuys.

It originated when we were filming “The Cello Song” the first project that Steven Sharp Nelson, Al van der Beek, Tel Stewart, and Paul Anderson did together (which is also the first time they all MET!)

As we were finishing the all-night film session, we starting talking about the many “uses” of the cello and before we knew it we were laughing about how funny it would be to make a movie about “cello bonding” — spending quality time with the cello. We didn’t feel like we could ever get away with making this video, but we just couldn’t help ourselves. For a while Al and Steve tried to write an arrangement of two Bob Marley tunes for the background of the video.

It wasn’t flowing, so the project was abandoned for several months. Since the making of “Cello Wars” we haven’t really had the opportunity to throw “funny” at our audience. And to be honest, we’ve missed it. We all love to laugh — especially at ourselves. It keeps the pressure of producing videos every other week bearable. We revisited this concept, but this time with a new tune — the Turtles “So Happy Together.” It fit perfectly. We ended up with a lot more scenes than we could use—some of which we were sad we couldn’t fit it. Maybe we’ll make an “extended version” one day.

“This video is dedicated to all of my music teachers that taught me to have FUN with music — to let it live and breathe rather than insist it be dead and dissected. As for my other music teachers that didn’t teach me to have fun. I’ll try to make a video for you some other time.”

Happy Together” is a 1967 song from The Turtles‘ album of the same name. Released in February 1967, the song knocked The Beatles‘ “Penny Lane” out of the number one slot for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the group’s only chart-topper. “Happy Together” reached #12 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1967. The song was written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, former members of a band known as The Magicians. The song had been rejected a dozen times before it was offered to The Turtles, and the demo acetate was worn out.

~~Lord of The Rings – The Hobbit (Piano/Cello Cover)~~

ThePianoGuys

~~Published on Nov 20, 2012~~

~~Story behind the song~~

Since the beginning of The Piano Guys, “Lord of the Rings” has been our most requested work. As we reach one million subscribers we wanted to dedicate this arrangement to our “subs.” This was an intimidating project — encompassing the power and the beauty of the many musical themes throughout the movies; capturing the emotion and the “epic” nature of the story; and all with a few cellos, a piano, and a couple Canon 5D Mark IIs.

We normally write our tunes during intense compositional binges — the bulk of our songs have been written within the period of a few days. This one was different. It was a drawn-out process during which we studied the music of The Lord of Rings, contemplated what themes to incorporate, how they could tell the story by flowing from one to the other. We also spent a lot of time finding new ways to imitate instruments from various sections of the orchestra using Steve’s cellos — from the brass section through the woodwind section to the percussion section.

We love the story of The Lord of the Rings. It is a tale that has spiritual meaning for us. We love its messages — that “even the smallest person can change the course of the future,” that “there’s good in this world and it’s worth fighting for,” “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us” … and that everyone should have a “second breakfast.” We love the poignant depiction of loyalty between the Fellowship of the Ring (we even included the “Fellowship” theme three times – at 0:183:58 and at the end of the arrangement – to feel like a common thread in the music as it is in the story.)

We wanted to paint these messages musically as vividly as possible. Like so many things in the creative realm, and to paraphrase Mr. Bilbo Baggins, the hardest part was the first step. After a brief introduction of the Hobbit Theme and Fellowship Theme (arguably the most relevant musical moments) we felt strongly that we needed to begin with the deeply touching melody that serves as the soundtrack to Arwen’s vision of her future son (in the extended version of Return of the King).

That gave way to a Divinely-led journey from the Shire and Rivendell through Isengard and Rohan to Gondor’s victory over Mordor. We endeavored to represent each of the major allies and opposing forces in the story:

The Elves 0:44
The Ents 1:48
Rohan 2:08
Mordor and Isengard 2:32
Hobbits 3:08
Gondor 4:11

The YouTube stars The Piano Guys have added another popular franchise to their repertoire. This time they’ve covered The Lord of the Rings.

Back in September, 2012, The Piano Guys signed a record deal with Sony. They were told by Sony, “We love what you guys do, we want to take it to the next level, keep doing what you’re doing.”

Who exactly are The Piano Guys?

56736-greenlin

The Piano Guys cover a variety of music. They’ve covered everything from Mozart to Adele. There are two on-screen musicians in the group – Jon Schmidt plays the piano while Steven Sharp Nelson plays the cello. There are three other equally important members. Paul Anderson, Tel Stewart, and Al van der Beek do the behind-the-scenes work that makes the great videos that The Piano Guys produce.

The Piano Guys excellent cover is of The Lord of the Rings. They’ve covered other fandom related music before. From Harry PotterStar Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean to Adele, One Direction, and Bruno Mars, The Piano Guys have a large repertoire of covers.

After signing with Sony we were putting together our first official release. Just before the deadline we looked at the song list and all agreed the album needed to include a new original piece.

But we had 48 hours ….

Hailing from UtahThe Piano Guys became an Internet sensation by way of their immensely successful series of strikingly original self-made music videos. They’ve made over 35 since joining forces in early 2011, including their hit video, an innovative 10-handed version of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.” But it’s the Guys’ highly original blend of classical music with pop that has really been the cause of an Internet phenomenon that has brought them to their major label debut album, The Piano Guys, released on Sony Masterworks.

In the last few months, The Piano Guys have performed on everywhere from “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” to “The Today Show” and “Katie.”  One of their videos –  “Mission Impossible” – featuring YouTube violin sensation Lindsey Stirling, continues to build momemtum with over 1.5M views in a month.

It finds the band and Stirling in a spy thriller as covert operatives while playing their unique take on this famous musical theme.

(You will soon see the “Mission Impossible” video featured here).

The album features more of the imaginative mash-up arrangements that The Piano Guys are already famous for, including sources ranging from Michael Jackson to Mozart, The Bourne Identity to David Guetta. It also includes an original song and innovative takes on hits by One Direction, Adele and Christina Perri.

~~Over the Rainbow/Simple Gifts (Piano/Cello Cover)~~

ThePianoGuys

~~Uploaded on Feb 27, 2012~~

~~Story behind the song~~

Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson were booked for a Piano Guys show in Hawaii. How could we resist filming our next video in the land of Aloha — beautiful beaches, green mountains, and fresh pineapple??

We went to our Founders and Facebook fans to ask what song they wanted us to play there. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was the nearly-unanimous response. But you know how we are … we couldn’t “just” do this tune by itself … so in the studio we found a made-in-heaven match-up in the timeless melody from the Shaker Hymn “Simple Gifts” written in the 1800’s (also used by Aaron Copland in his Ballet “Appalachian Spring”).

We feel it’s an especially appropriate mash-up because of our profound love and respect for the Hawaiian culture — a people who are so good at finding happiness in simplicity. As you probably could hear we borrowed a lot of ideas from Iz’s version which has become the stuff of legend. This arrangement is, in part, a tribute to him.

Getting a piano onto a sandy beach and then onto a big hill in a famous ranch within the SAME day (we only had 8 hours to film) was no small feat. The only thing harder would be to be predict Hawaiian weather, which ended up being our biggest challenge.

“We had a little extra help on this one. My mother, Lynne Sanders Nelson — a main source of my inspiration for pursuing music — passed away early in life from the effects of a brain tumor. She was an incredibly-gifted musician and taught me to play music passionately rather than just playing ‘notes’ on a page. ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ was one of her favorite songs. We finished this arrangement on what would have been her 70th birthday. Somehow she helped. I miss her so very much, but when I play songs like this I feel like I get to be with her again. This song is dedicated to her.”
Steven Sharp Nelson

Thank you so much to the Kualoa Ranch who bent over backwards last-minute for us and provided us such a beautiful place to shoot. Visit their site at http://www.kualoa.com — when you visit Hawaii be sure to stop by and take a tour — its where dozens of huge blockbluster movies/tv shows have been filmed.

~~Beethoven’s 5 Secrets – OneRepublic (Cello/Orchestral Cover)~~

ThePianoGuys

~~Uploaded on Feb 9, 2012~~

~~Story behind the song~~

The American Heritage Lyceum Philharmonic (Youth Orchestra) and its director, Kayson Brown, approached us with this idea. We loved it. It combined two of the things we are working to accomplish — inviting people to classical music and inspiring young musicians.

Steven Sharp Nelson had soloed with the orchestra the previous year and loved the spirit and the talent that the orchestra showed at such young ages (ages 13-18!).

Together we developed the concept of “Beethoven’s 5 Secrets,” combining OneRepublic‘s tune “Secrets” with melodies and moments from all four movements of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.

We used 5 different melodies from the 4 movements of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony (not including the “bridge” the orchestra plays in the middle).

Try to guess where they are and where they come from!

What are Beethoven’s secrets?

He had many. His most prominent secret that he desperately tried to keep from the public and that caused him to be considered extremely eccentric, irritable, and hermit-like was his “weakness.” He was deaf during most of his life. Imagine that … one of the greatest composers that ever lived could hardly hear. And yet, he wrote his life’s greatest works after becoming deaf.

He believed that art itself had “secrets” that had to be “forced into” in order to obtain art’s highest level.

There is no doubt Beethoven discovered many of the “secrets” of art — people all over the world enjoy them every day. He was a true master of music, blessed by God.

This piece and video are dedicated to him.

I have “fallen in love” with this group of musicians and follow what they are doing. Their music is amazing. The way they blend pop music with classical music is inspiring. Many a-listeners enjoy this combination. It’s one of the things that make them unique.

Another outstanding factor is the magnificent idea of taking their music to Nature sites. This makes their presentation even more attractive and remarkable.

~~Story behind the song~~

There are few “hooks” in the movie-music world that are as grabby as the Bourne Identity Soundtrack riff (starts at 0:29).

Like the movie series, its intensity commands attention. We just had to figure out a way to use it. In our usual style, we thought we’d create an “action movie soundtrack” that combined this and a piece of classical music.

In the early 1700’s Antonio Vivaldi wrote a concerto for an instrument that was then largely “undiscovered” by the music world — the cello. Among the first cello solo pieces ever written, Vivaldi was gutsy enough to write it for not only one, but TWO solo cellos and string orchestra. With no “action movies” in the 1700’s, this piece was probably the closest you could get to one.

It has intense and exciting moments between beautiful lyrical moments. It was this piece, among others, that got Steven (the cello guy) excited about classical music — it was one of the first pieces he played with orchestra.

90% of this tune was written in 3 days. We worked on it day and night because it was so enjoyable to write.

This video features Steve’s newest cello “Thor.”

It was handmade for Steven by Dawson Swan out of STEEL. Dawson is an amazing artist. Check his website out here: http://dawesome.net. This cello inspired a lot of this music and video. ALL the percussion sounds you hear were created by THIS cello.

Thank you Dawson!

The Piano Guys play Chopin on Great Wall of China

Using only a piano, cello, and Asian percussion instruments including the Erhu and Guqin, The Piano Guys have revealed their latest Chopin-inspired track.

Once they were granted a permit to film on the Great Wall, they had to decide on which music to record. As well as including the classical influence, they wanted to include music from Kung Fu Panda, and a musical ‘Kung Fu battle‘ section in the middle.

They said: “Since ThePianoGuys began, it has been our impossible dream to put a grand piano on the Great Wall. People laughed at us when we said we were determined to do it. It is done.”

Now they’ve successfully captured the atmosphere of the Great Wall, the Piano Guys’ new dream is to play music on all seven wonders of the world.

Can we put in a bid for Stonehenge next, please?

The PianoGuys are a group of guys talented in all things musical, from a solo pianist to a cellist that plays multiple instruments, a studio engineer that writes music and a videographer with a gift for marketing; they have garnered millions upon millions of Youtube views.

And now they have done it again; the PianoGuys received permission from the Chinese Government to film on the Huangyaguan portion of the Great Wall. It took a crane to lift the piano on to the wall and 60 local workers to push it to its filming location. They had a mere 12 hours to shoot the entire video, though the biggest issue was making sure they composed a piece great enough to be played on the Great Wall.

~~THE STORY~~

Since ThePianoGuys began, it has been our impossible dream to put a grand piano on the Great Wall. People laughed at us when we said we were determined to do it. It is done. All of us at ThePianoGuys would like to dedicate this music video to the visionary behind it all and the man whose dream this has always been: Paul Anderson.

It is difficult to detail each of the many miracles that were stitched together in time turning this dream into actuality. Master Oogway, himself, said that “a destiny is not realized until we let go of the illusion of control.”

To say we made this happen of our own accord would be to fall victim to this illusion. An invisible hand guided us, for which we are eternally grateful. This was a life-changing experience for us.

Piano Guys visit another World Wonder, perform ‘How Great Thou Art’

The Piano Guys are back at it, and this time they’ve chosen two World Wonders as their backdrop. Performing “How Great Thou Art,” combined with “Gabriel’s Oboe,” The Piano Guys newest video shows them in Brazil near the statue Christ the Redeemer, one of the New7Wonders, and the Iguazu Falls, one of the New7Wonders of Nature.

This video, which was released Wednesday morning, April 2, 2014, is the group’s second featuring a World Wonder. Last October, 2013, The Piano Guys embarked on their journey to perform at each of the New7Wonders by filming on the Great Wall of China in “Kung Fu Piano: Cello Ascends.”

~~Story behind the video & song~~

We’ve set an ambitious goal to film in front of all Seven Wonders of the World. We started with the Great Wall of China.
As our tour of Brazil approached we set our sights on our next Wonder: Christ the Redeemer. This incredible piece of art soars 10 stories in the air, stretches 100 feet wide and weighs 1.4 million pounds (630,000 kg). But even more impressive is that it was built in the 1920’s on a peak of a sheer 2,300 ft. (700 meter) cliff overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

Not far from this inspiring statue are the Iguazu Falls — a natural Wonder of the World. Made up of 275 waterfalls that stretch across 1.7 miles (2.7 km), to match the amount of water that flows down these falls you would need 2 million people to each pour a quart of water every second.

As we considered what piece of music would be worthy of such incomparable locations we looked to songs that have been composed or used to praise Jesus Christ, for whom the statue was built and who billions believe created all the natural wonders of this world.

We wanted to combine the melody of the heartfelt hymn of praise “How Great Thou Art” with one of the most beautiful melodies ever written — the theme from the movie “The Mission” (“Gabriel’s Oboe.”)

The Mission” is a movie that powerfully depicts the lives of men that lay down their lives for others. It was also filmed at Iguazu Falls. “How Great Thou Art” praises God and all that He has done for His children on this Earth. The two harmonize so beautifully with each other, both musically and thematically. As we played these pieces in front of the Christ Statue and Iguazu Falls we felt an overwhelming sense of wonder, peace, and joy.

When considering which song the group should perform at this location, The Piano Guys were meticulous.

The Mission/How Great Thou Art – ThePianoGuys (Wonder of The World 2 of 7)

This music video is not meant to exclude anyone that does not believe in God. We hope that it instead promotes spiritual feelings that can be felt by all — gratitude for a beautiful Earth, for life, and for joy.

A wise man once said, “If we thought of life as a gift, we might not demand nearly as much from it. And if we lived more graciously, giving of ourselves more freely to the well-being of others, many of our personal concerns would disappear, and life would become easier for all.”

We respect all beliefs and opinions, but we hope that in the comments everyone can set aside religious differences and instead focus on building each other up — through gratitude, inspiration, kindness and mutual respect.
