Stephen William Hawking, CH CBE FRS FRSA, (8 January 1942 – 14 March 2018), was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge.

His scientific works included a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation.

Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics.

He was a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

The physicist, who died Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at age 76, wasn’t expected to see his 25th birthday, after being diagnosed with the incurable neurodegenerative condition ALS at age 21.

Though Hawking beat the odds for more than five decades, the scientist told the Guardian in 2011 that death was never far from his mind.

~Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis~

ALS is a group of rare neurological diseases that mainly involve the nerve cells (neurons) responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. Voluntary muscles produce movements like chewing, walking, and talking. The disease is progressive, meaning the symptoms get worse over time.

Currently, there is no cure for ALS and no effective treatment to halt, or reverse, the progression of the disease.

Neil deGrasse Tyson (born October 5, 1958) is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, and science communicator. He is currently the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space and a research associate in the department of astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History.

“I think people ask that question on the assumption that meaning is something you can look for and then,I found it. Here’s the meaning.  And it doesn’t consider the possibility that meaning is something you create, you manufacture it for yourself and for others.

So when I think of meaning’ in life, I ask, did I learn something today that I didn’t know yesterday, bringing me a little closer to knowing all that can be known in the universe? If I live a day and I don’t know a little more than I did the day before, I think I wasted that day. To think brings you closer to nature. To learn how things work gives you power to influence events. Gives you power to help people who may need it power to help yourselves to shape a trajectory.

So when I think of what is the meaning of life, to me that’s not an eternal, unanswerable question to me that is in arm’s reach of me everyday.”

Carl Edward Sagan (November 9, 1934 – December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, cosmologist, astrophysicist, astro-biologist, author, science popularizer, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. His contributions were central to the discovery of the high surface temperatures of Venus.

However, he is best known for his contributions to the scientific research of extraterrestrial life, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages that were sent into space:  the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them.

He published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author, co-author or editor of more than 20 books.

Movie time …. “The Theory of Everything”!!

I must confess that I didn’t know about the existence or the importance of Mr. Steven Hawking until I started watching the American sitcom “The Big Bang” and there was continued reference to him as an incredible scientist. 

I saw the movie “The Theory of Everything” and it portrayed a part of the history of this amazing human being. 

The Theory of Everything is a 2014 British biographical romantic drama film directed by James Marsh and written by Anthony McCarten. The film was inspired by the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen by Jane Wilde Hawking, which deals with her relationship with her ex-husband, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, his diagnosis of motor neuron disease, and his success in physics.

This is the sixth feature film directed by Marsh. Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones star with Charlie Cox, Emily Watson, Simon McBurney, and David Thewlis featured in supporting roles.

The Theory of Everything had its world premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and was released in theaters on November 7, 2014. Focus Features will distribute the film in the United States, Entertainment One Films will distribute the film in Canada, and Universal Pictures will distribute the film in remaining territories.

Who says science and love (and science and the arts) don’t go together?

A new movie set to premiere in November 2014 will feature the life story of physicist Stephen Hawking and focuses on his relationship with Jane Wilde, the art student he fell in love with while studying at Cambridge in the 1960s. “The Theory of Everything” also depicts Hawking’s genuis amid the diagnosis of a fatal illness at age 21 and how he has survived.

Hawking has achieved success with works of popular science in which he discusses his own theories and cosmology in general; his A Brief History of Time stayed on the British Sunday Times best-sellers list for a record-breaking 237 weeks.

Hawking has a motor neuron disease related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a condition that has progressed over the years. He is almost entirely paralyzed and communicates through a speech-generating device. He married twice and has three children.
