ONE YEAR AGO TODAY

~FACEBOOK MEMORIES~

🇵🇷💞🇵🇷 … ONE YEAR AGO TODAY … I POSTED THIS!! 🇵🇷💞🇵🇷

Hi! My name is Horty Rexach.

I am Puerto Rican and I grew up in an island (according to the president of the US Virgin Islands) in the middle of the ocean.

Surrounded by water. Big water.

A lot of water!

PTFl

Oh! … and we ARE American citizens, not by choice but rather by imposition.

We have been American citizens since 1917 because there was no other option.
My people have served in the might U.S. of A. military forces since 1917.

Yep, citizenship was imposed in the beginning of World War One.

1917

We speak both English and Spanish.

The Puerto Rican people receive $22.5 million dollars in social help as well as subsidies from the American government.

However, we produce around $77 million dollars toward the economy of the mighty U.S. of A.

Why do we have two last names?

No Puerto Rican woman loses her last name when she marries because we don’t want to forget our very own mothers.

We are an archipelago (because we are not only a small island – we have Culebra, Vieques, Isla de Mona and several others).

The geography of Puerto Rico consists of an archipelago located between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands.

The main island of Puerto Rico is the smallest and most eastern of the Greater Antilles.

Our small archipielago, surrounded by big water, provides more members to the military forces per capita than ANY other state of the Union!!

Our Island has produced astronauts, NASA engineers, scientists, a Judge in the US Supreme Court, a recipient of a Medal of Honor, 5 Miss Universe crowns, the Borinqueneers (65th Infantry Division – google this one), Oscar and Grammy recipients, athletes, actors of world fame and many more distinguished citizens who call our beautiful Island HOME.

We are a beautiful and interesting mix of Spanish (European), African and Taíno blood. This mix gives us an incredible drive to survive.

Nothing Breaks our Boricua Spirit

NOTHING!!

We do not fit in any BOX.

Biologist says Puerto Rican women possess the ideal genotype of the ‘Perfect‘ human via DNA ancestry.

It is a fact that this genetic composition represents the human race because of its wide heritage of races.
#PuertoRicoStrong … 🇵🇷 … ¡Weeepa!

I am Puerto Rican and I’m damn proud of it!!

To start the day …. Remembering my country, Puerto Rico!!

~~August 11, 2014~~

I’m feeling a little bit sentimental today. I’m missing my roots. I am from Puerto Rico. I was born and raised there. I didn’t come to the USA, to live permanently until 1999. I really wanted to leave the Island and live stateside.

It’s not like I lost my connection but my immediate family has passed on. Going back would really make to major difference. The Island is a mini-USA.

I’d be right at home.

Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Spanish: Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico, is an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the northeastern Caribbean east of the Dominican Republic and west of both the United States Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico (Spanish for “rich port”) is an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands, the largest of which are Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. The main island of Puerto Rico is, by land area, the smallest of the Greater Antilles. With around 3.6 million people, it ranks third in population among that group of four islands, which include Cuba, Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti), and Jamaica.

The capital and largest city is San Juan. Due to its location, Puerto Rico has a tropical climate and is subject to hot weather all-year-round. The national language is Spanish but English is recognized as an official language as well.

Originally populated for centuries by the aboriginal people known as Taíno, the island was claimed by Christopher Columbus for Spain during his second voyage to the Americas on November 19, 1493. Like Cuba, Puerto Rico remained a Spanish colony until 1898.

Despite the Laws of Burgos of 1512 and other decrees for the protection of Indians, some Taíno peoples were forced into slavery in the early years of colonization. Others suffered high fatalities from epidemics of European infectious diseases. In four centuries of Spanish rule, the island’s culture and physical landscape were transformed. European knowledge, customs and traditions were introduced, namely Christianity, the Spanish language, and advances of European civilization such as agriculture, construction in stone, and new technologies such as the clock and the printing press.

Numerous public buildings, forts, churches and public infrastructure were built during Spanish colonization, including ports, roads and lighthouses, many of which survive to this day. For over three centuries the island was linked to Spain through regular convoys of the West Indies Fleet which sailed from Cadiz to the Spanish West Indies every year.

Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony for over 400 years, despite attempts to capture the island by the French, Dutch, and British.

On November 25, 1897, Spain’s central government in Madrid granted the island the Autonomic Charter and finally the colony of Puerto Rico ceased to exist. Instead, Puerto Rico was annexed to the rest of Spain as an overseas autonomous province in full equality with the other provinces of the Spanish nation.

The complete integration of Puerto Rico to Spain automatically extended Title I of the Spanish constitution turning all Puerto Ricans into Spanish citizens and allowed Puerto Rico to have full representation in the Spanish Courts of Madrid. In 1898, Spain was forced by the United States to cede the Autonomous Province of Puerto Rico as a result of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris.

In 1917, the U.S. granted citizenship to Puerto Ricans. In 1948, Puerto Ricans were given the right to elect their own governor. In 1952, under request by the United States, a local territorial constitution was adopted and ratified by the electorate. Under the tenets of the Puerto Rico Federal Relations Act, residents of the island are still subject to the plenary jurisdiction of the U.S. Congress. Puerto Rico remains a U.S. territory, although its political status is a subject of ongoing debate among residents.

TO THIS DAY PUERTO RICO IS STILL A COLONY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. CITIZENS DO NOT VOTE FOR THE PRESIDENT YET THEY CAN BE DRAFTED OR VOLUNTARILY JOIN THE ARMED FORCES.

SOME PAY TAXES TO THE USA, DEPENDING ON THEIR INCOME BRACKET. ALL PAY LOCAL TAXES.

PUERTO RICO HAS ITS OWN NATIONAL HYMN, ITS OWN MISS UNIVERSE CANDIDATE, BASEBALL, BASKETBALL AND OLYMPIC TEAMS. THE PRIMARY LANGUAGE IS SPANISH YET ENGLISH IS SPOKEN BY THE MAJORITY.

“I am a cameraman/d.p. based in Los Angeles. On my last trip to my island, I took my new toy, a Phantom 2 drone with a GoPro camera in tow. I did not have a lot of time, and there are so many beautiful locations I missed, but I hope to return soon, and capture as much as I can (Flamenco Beach, El Yunque, La Cueva del Indio, etc.). I hope you enjoy it.”
