ALIKE

DO YOU SEE IT?

A short film about how ‘life’, as we have been programmed to know it, chokes the color and creativity out society’s members .

Something to think about on this day of giving thanks.

RedLineBLying on the northeastern-most point of the islet of Old San Juan, Castillo San Felipe del Morro is named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. The fortification, also referred to as el Morro or ‘the promontory,’ was designed to guard the entrance to the San Juan Bay, and defend the Spanish colonial port city of San Juan from seaborne enemies.

The sentry boxes or “garitas” were used by the Spanish soldiers or guards to protect the city walls night and day. Some of these were located quite near to others but others were more distant and solitary.

At night the guards would occasionally shout a call to other guards in their boxes so as to check on their whereabouts and to keep from falling asleep.

Cinco de Mayo …. “🇺🇸🇲🇽 America vs. Mexico: ATTN explains 🇲🇽🇺🇸 …. “!!

Mayo1

~~May 5, 2018~~

CINCO DE MAYO

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is seen as THE day to celebrate Mexican food, culture, and traditions

As time has passed, the historical context of  ‘Cinco de Mayo‘ started to be forgotten.

History of Cinco de Mayo in the US
In 1862, at the time the Battle of Puebla took place, the United States was engaged in its Civil War. The French presence in Mexico was a strategic move:

by gaining a toehold in Mexico, the French could then support the Confederate Army.

The defeat of the French at the Battle of Puebla was not definitive, but it helped to stave off the French while the U.S. Union forces made advances.
Thus Cinco de Mayo can be seen as a turning point in the US Civil War.

Cinco de Mayo was first celebrated in the United States in Southern California in 1863 as a show of solidarity with Mexico against French rule.

However, I couldn’t let this one pass.

Maya Angelou’s birthday!

GoldSwirlMay8GoldSwirl

Prolific poet and writer Maya Angelou would’ve turned 90 on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.
To honor and celebrate the phenomenal woman who penned the powerful “Still I Rise,” Google has dedicated the day’s doodle on its search homepage to Angelou, who died in 2014 at age 86.

The doodle is accompanied by an animated reading of “Still I Rise,” featuring the voices of celebrities she influenced, including Oprah Winfrey, Alicia Keys, America Ferrera and Laverne Cox. Her only son, Guy Johnson, also lends his voice.

“Maya Angelou is not what she has done or written or spoken, it’s how she did it all,” Winfrey told Google.

“She moved through the world with unshakeable calm, confidence, and a fiery, fierce grace and abounding love.”

Wednesday also marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., a friend of the author’s.

For more than 30 years, in lieu of celebrating her birthday, Angelou sent flowers to Coretta Scott King on April 4.

HONORING PUERTO RICO

Some of you may know, others not.

I am a fan of tattoos, having a few of them myself.

I’m also Puerto Rican, born and raised, living in the mainland.

Since September 20, 2017, when Hurricane María battered and almost flattened my country, my personal feelings have come to the surface.

My heart and soul ache for Puerto Rico.

Yesterday, I visited my tattoo artist.

I had an idea in my mind but Stacy showed me her idea and this is what she came up with.

I instantly fell in love with this image.

This is a proud Boricua woman, holding her head up high, ready to hold her stand and give the good fight. This happens in Puerto Rico every minute of every day.

The fortitude of the Puerto Rican woman has been tested during the trying times since the hurricane.

There are still some details and colors to be added to the artwork.

I wanted to share this with you today.

 More will follow when completed.

Tencha, you rock!

That looks like a Puerto Rican statue of liberty on steroids.

💟 💟 💟

Comes to mind the last part of “En La Brecha“, de José de Diego.

Jeannette P.

My Facebook friend saw the image and commented as noted above.

I asked her about “En La Brecha” and here it is.

Jose

~En La Brecha~
Poema

José de Diego
¡Ah desgraciado si el dolor te abate,
si el cansancio tus miembros entumece!
Haz como el árbol seco: reverdece
y como el germen enterrado: late.

Resurge, alienta, grita, anda, combate,
vibra, ondula, retruena, resplandece …

AMERICA’S LEAST KNOWN MILITARY OCCUPATION

I’ve been re-discovering the history of my country, Puerto Rico. As I’m going through that process, I’ve thought about other countries which could have experienced similar events as a result of the endless desire of the United States to be a global empire.

My gut was correct!

One of the countries whose history I want to review and research is Hawaii. I found this interesting video that explains concisely some of the information that I’ve been searching for.

Always remember, there’s truth in yest!

I worked on the Puerto Rico video; here’s the Hawaii one mentioned by the creators.

My heart bleeds for these countries!

Aloha!

I had the magical opportunity to visit Hawai’i at the start of the month and talk with local and native Hawaiians.

They all said the biggest problem they face is the fact that so few people are aware of the history of ongoing US military occupation.

So on my return to Australia, I decided to make a video about it.
