Slow Down: How Our Fast-Paced World Is Making Us Sick
MODERN SPACES
Wider roads
Reclaimed our abode
Lesser spaces
More roadways
Leads nowhere
Classy vehicles
Steering for long
Congested traffic
Life comes to
A standstill
Homes push away
Further from heart
Electronic signals
Directs our journey
Everyone back home
Waits for none
This is a journey
With a passion
Without a rear view mirror
There’s no looking back

Living under unnatural time pressures causes a myriad of psychological, social and physical ailments.
Not so very long ago, humans — like the rest of the animals and plants on earth — moved through our natural cycles at nature’s pace. Time was marked by the passing of the seasons, the life cycles of human, animal and plant life and the yet grander cycles of the moon and the other celestial bodies.
Homo sapiens, a late-appearing species in the long history of our unimaginably ancient planet and universe, evolved during the recent (as the universe views these things!) Pleistocene era, adapted for a life intimately connected with and expressive of our natural surroundings on the African savannah and beyond.
And this is how we lived for millennia.
The human relationship with time has radically changed.
And that’s how many modern people feel — completely frazzled and out of synch with our deepest selves.

As I was going through my Facebook timeline this morning, I saw this “Marble Race” short video.
It brought to mind how life has changed with time. Of course, things never stand still. If they do, stagnation ensues. Yet, I couldn’t help thinking about the fast-paced life we live.
I experienced it before I retired from my job. I see it every day in the adult members of my family and see the reflection of this fast pace on the young ones.
Us, “older people” need to slow down. I have …. but my “surroundings” haven’t and many times I feel sucked back into this fast pace.
I resist it but the pull into this voracious lifestyle is strong. Ironic that it really doesn’t have to do with me.
It really has to do with others who surround me and don’t seem able to withstand the “pull”.
