CARMEN YULIN CRUZ
~MAYOR OF SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO~
IT TAKES A WOMAN
I wasn’t aware of this government official in Puerto Rico until after Hurricane María when I saw her Facebook and Twitter postings, when I saw her pictures of wading in waist deep water, carrying a bullhorn, trying to check on her constituents.
It seemed to me that in additions to speaking for the people of San Juan, she was standing up and representing all the people of the Island.
I knew there was a male governor and remembered wondering where he was.
I had been disconnected from the politics in my country for a long time, didn’t know much but general details.
Needless to say, she’s made quite the impression on me. I have heard that she has plenty of detractors and critics. I have started following Ms. Cruz and have immense respect, appreciation and admiration for her. To me, she has become the champion for the people of Puerto Rico.
Many say that she’s doing all of this because she wants to run for governor on 2020.
In my opinion, based on what I’ve seen, she would be a considerable contender, in spite of what anyone else says to the contrary.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz to Drumpf: You Can’t Handle the Truth
by SUZANNE GAMBOA
WASHINGTON, DC
Denied her chance to testify before Congress Wednesday, November 1, the mayor of Puerto Rico’s largest city used a Capitol hallway to heap criticism on ‘so-called President’ Drumpf, saying he “can’t handle the truth.”
Six weeks since the monstrous hurricane hit the island, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said the island remains in a “life or death” situation.
“The Drumpf administration can’t handle the truth,” she said, adding that “survival cannot be our new way of life.”
Cruz was supposed to testify Wednesday, November 1, before the House Committee on Homeland Security, but the hearing was abruptly canceled. Cruz got news of the cancellation after she had already headed to Washington. Brock Long, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency testified on Tuesday.
“I am here to say what I was going to say at that hearing, that they seemed not to want to hear,” she said. “Mr. Trump, do your job. Lives are at stake. This is not about politics. This is not about your ego. This is about the people of Puerto Rico and the people of the U.S. VI (Virgin Islands).”

Ticking off a list of demands, Cruz said the administration needs to treat Puerto Rico with dignity and suspend the Jones Act for four years. The law restricts shipping to the island to U.S. ships with U.S. crews.
Puerto Rico needs a comprehensive “reform” and “restoration” plan that “touches on energy and education and health care, but it can’t be a plan that takes us back to the 1950’s,” she said.
“No longer will we be able to hide inequality and poverty behind palm trees and piña coladas,” she said.
Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley, D-New York, organized the news conference, which was held after the caucus met. He was joined by Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., who is the ranking Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee and other Democrats.
