Martin Luther King Jr., an AmericanĀ clergymanĀ and civil rights leader, was shot at theĀ Lorraine MotelĀ inĀ Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.

He was rushed toĀ St. Joseph’s Hospital, and was pronounced dead at 7:05Ā p.m. CST. He was a prominentĀ leaderĀ of theĀ Civil Rights MovementĀ and aĀ Nobel Peace PrizeĀ laureate who was known for his use ofĀ nonviolenceĀ andĀ civil disobedience.

Martin Luther King Jr.Ā (January 15, 1929Ā ā€“ April 4, 1968) was an AmericanĀ BaptistĀ minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in theĀ civil rights movementĀ from 1954 through 1968.

He is best known for his role in the advancement ofĀ civil rightsĀ by using the tactics ofĀ nonviolenceĀ andĀ civil disobedienceĀ based on hisĀ ChristianĀ beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism ofĀ Mahatma Gandhi.

King led the 1955Ā Montgomery bus boycottĀ and in 1957 became the first president of theĀ Southern Christian Leadership ConferenceĀ (SCLC). With the SCLC, he led an unsuccessfulĀ 1962 struggle against segregationĀ inĀ Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests inĀ Birmingham, Alabama.

He also helped organize the 1963Ā March on Washington, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
