The earth is the planet given to us by God to live on.
Despite what scientists might have us believe, it is the only planet in our solar system that humanity can comfortably inhabit. The earth is a paradise for the creatures that live on it. Every species on earth has its place in the circle of life.
Human beings need food, clothing, shelter to survive. All of these are provided in ample supply on God’s green earth. It is an unfortunate fact the we have not taken good care of the land that has been placed in our guardianship.
Take the Google Earth Day quiz to find out which animal are you
MY ANSWER
“You’re a woolly mammoth!
So unique, you’re technically extinct, but on the bright side scientists hope to be able to clone you some day!”
The Google Earth Day doodle is a first of its kind doodle that “presents one of the Internet’s favorite pastimes: a goofy quiz,” that at the end of it tells you which animal you are the closest to.
The Google Earth Day Quiz works on “any up-to-date browsers on your mobile or desktop browsers, including the Android and iOS Google Apps.”
Pangolin, honey badger, cuttlefish, mantis shrimp, komodo dragon, woolly mammoth, honey bee, red-capped manakin, coral, giant squid, sea otter and whooping crane are among the results that users would be presented depending on the options they choose.
The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970 and was founded by US Senator Gaylord Nelson. The original Earth Day was attended by about 20 million Americans. The Earth Day movement went global in 1990 and is now celebrated in over 175 countries across the globe. April 22 was officially designated as the international Earth Day by the United Nations in 2009.
The day is marked to raise awareness and appreciation for our planet’s environment.
Google has been celebrating Earth Day through its popular doodles for the last 15 years.

I was 19 years old when the concept of celebrating a special day for Mother Earth was coming to be. I remember the joy and the respect that surrounded this concept. We we celebrating our home, our planet. Problems were identified.
The need to step up to this challenge was recognized because something had to be done to preserve our home, to save it for future generations.
I’m sitting here in my office and I’m looking up at my bookshelves. I see books there that I got during those early years:
The End Of Nature, EarthRight, The Green Consumer, Topical Nature, Save Our Planet, Spiritual Ecology, 50 Simple Things You Can Do To Save The Earth, 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do To Save The Earth, How to Make The World A Better Place, Two Minutes A Day For A Greater Planet, Silent Spring, The Reclycler’s Handbook …
and several more.
I took Ecology classes in college. I participated in activities and the spirit was there. Something would be done by my generation to make Earth a healthier, safer and cherished place.
I have become an adult, a senior citizen and I look back … “celebrating 45 years”.
I wonder …. what has been done? What has been accomplished? Is Mother Earth healthy? Will we be able to hand down a sustainable planet to the next generation as we planned?
Sadly, I think not. They will have the same challenges and even more so because of the way my generation has “conducted business” and failed at making this wonderful planet what it should be. We failed to reverse the damages done by “progress”. And these still continue to this day.
We hear it all the time: climate change, carbon emissions, fossil fuels, burning rain forests, disappearance of endangered species, plastic pollution, environmental protection and so much more ….. There’s a lot to do; so much more than what was needed in 1969.
Like Prince Ea says: “Sorry, future generations“. It is a beautiful world. Stand up and get the job done.
Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.
In 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to first be celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature’s equipoise was later sanctioned in a Proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations.
A month later a separate Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award in recognition of his work. While this April 22 Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues.
Give back to Mother Earth this Earth Day – April 22nd, 2015 – by planting a new tree in your area, or by donating to have a tree planted in a developing nation.
Global Poverty Project CEO Hugh Evans has many goals for Saturday’s free Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day rally on the National Mall, one of which is simple: “We want the sun to shine,” Evans says. His other goals are more ambitious. The rally and star-studded concert, put on by the Global Poverty Project and the Earth Day Network, aim to unite the issues of climate change and global poverty, and to engage citizens and business and world leaders to act now to address both.

What is this?
It’s a rally. The main event is the free concert, which will feature sets from My Morning Jacket (read Express’ interview with singer Jim James here), Train, Fall Out Boy, Mary J. Blige, Usher and No Doubt. Will.i.am and Soledad O’Brien are hosting the program, which runs rain or shine. The day’s speakers include Don Cheadle, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim. Organizers are not releasing a schedule of performances.
Where is this happening?
On the National Mall. The stage is between the Ellipse and the Washington Monument, just south of Constitution Avenue. The grounds have three access points: Jefferson Drive and 15th Street NW, 17th Street and Independence Avenue SW, and 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW. Parking is limited; your best bet is to take Metro to the Federal Triangle or Smithsonian stations.

Why is this happening now?
The rally is timed to coincide with both the 45th anniversary of Earth Day and the spring meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund. “We’re interested in building a sustainable movement,” Evans says. “And that’s all focused on long-term engagement of people who want to create change but often don’t know how they can best direct their actions.”
Getting ready. Earth Day is around the corner. Be a part of it.
