Something to think about …. “Freedom Concert … taking shape …. Inauguration Day 2017…. “!!

The worst thing we can do to Donald Trump is take away his audience

you reap what you sow
you eventually have to face up to the consequences of your actions

Robert Reich threw out an idea to his nearly 1.7 million Facebook followers this week that has a lot of people asking: How do we make this happen?

In a Facebook post on Sunday, December 18, the former secretary of labor under President Bill Clinton noted the dearth of celebrities and musicians willing to participate in Donald Trump’s inauguration festivities.

Many supported Hillary Clinton.

So Reich is championing the idea that celebrities host an event of their own on Inauguration Day to give the official event, starring Trump, a run for the ratings.

“Someone just suggested to me a televised ‘freedom concert’ to air at the same time as the inauguration – with huge celebrities like Beyoncé and Jay Z, Madonna, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, and so on,” Reich wrote.

“Alec Baldwin MC’s the event, playing Trump as he does on SNL.

The Trump inauguration loses all the TV ratings. Basically, no one watches it.”

Reich also suggested that such a concert could raise money for a variety of progressive causes, including “the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Lambda Legal, NAACP, Common Cause, CAIR, IRAP, SPLC, Environmental Defense Fund, Human Rights Campaign Fund, MoveOn, Economic Policy Institute, Inequality Media, and GLAAD.”

His post inspired a petition that, as of Wednesday morning, had attracted nearly 44,000 signatures and dozens of supporters on Twitter.

The Chemical Industry in the United States

The chemicals industry is one of the United States’ largest manufacturing industries, serving both a sizable domestic market and an expanding global market. It is also one of the top exporting sectors of U.S. manufacturing. Accounting for 15 percent of global chemical shipments, the United States is a world leader in chemicals production and exports.

The industry’s more than 10,000 firms produce more than 70,000 products. In 2012, the U.S. chemicals industry had sales of $769.4 billion and directly employed more than 784,000 workers, with additional indirect employment by industry suppliers of more than 2.7 million. With investment of $57 billion in research and development in 2012, and strong enforcement of intellectual property rights, one-fifth of all patents granted in the United States are chemistry-related.

Strong product identification and quality, access to low-cost natural gas, a highly educated workforce, world class research centers, protection for intellectual property, and a robust regulatory system make the United States a competitive home for chemicals firms from across the globe.

(I question the “robust regulatory system”)

Google Doodle …. Rachel Louise Carlson!!

Google Doodles Rachel Louise Carson’s 107th Birthday

Google’s latest doodle marks the 107th birth anniversary of American marine biologist, author and conservationist, Rachel Louise Carson.

Born in 1907, Carson’s work was mainly focused in the fields of marine biology, ecology, pesticides and nature writing. Rachel Louise Carson was also credited with bringing global attention to the problems associated with the conservation of the environment.

Rachel Louise Carson was born in Springdale, Pennsylvania and studied at the Chatham University and, later, the John Hopkins University. Her research into the harmful effects of pesticides on marine life came after studying the synthetic pesticides developed during the Second World War.

The doodle shows Rachel Louise Carson, standing amidst a vast expanse of marine and plant life and birds with a notebook, a backpack and a pair of binoculars.

Google is written in the middle in a calligraphic font.

Carson’s first book, The Sea Around Us, released in 1951 and was a bestseller. It also won her the US National Book Award. Her three books, The Sea Around Us (1951), The Edge of the Sea (1955) and Silent Spring (1962) were described as the Sea Trilogy.

Silent Spring (1962) was a landmark as it led to the reversal of the policy on the use of pesticides.

Rachel Louise Carson’s efforts were concentrated towards the direct ban of DDT. While she didn’t live to see that, in the year 1972 the Environmental Defense Fund and other allied groups succeeded in securing a phase out of the pesticide. It also led to the formation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act of 1962 in the US.

Rachel Louise Carson passed away in 1964, after having been weakened with her treatment for breast cancer she encountered a respiratory infection and eventually suffered a fatal heart attack on April 14, 1964.

Rachel Louise Carson was awarded the Presidential Medal of freedom posthumously by President Jimmy Carter.

“The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.”
~Rachel Carson~

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
~Rachel CarsonSilent Spring~

“But man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself.”
~Rachel Carson~

“It is a curious situation that the sea, from which life first arose should now be threatened by the activities of one form of that life. But the sea, though changed in a sinister way, will continue to exist; the threat is rather to life itself.”
~Rachel CarsonThe Sea Around Us~

“To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of years, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.”
~Rachel Carson~
