“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 double album The Beatles (also known as “the White Album“). It was written by George Harrison, the band’s lead guitarist. The song serves as a comment on the disharmony within the Beatles following their return from studying Transcendental Meditation in India in early 1968.

This lack of camaraderie was reflected in the band’s initial apathy towards the composition, which Harrison countered by inviting his friend and occasional collaborator, Eric Clapton, to contribute to the recording.

In 1996, a star-studded concert was held in Italy.

The children of Bosnia were the focus of this event.

It tears my heart to think that this is still applicable to so many children of this war-torn world.

Eleven years later, it still applies!

A star-studded Pavarotti & Friends for War Child documents a 1996 summer concert for the children of Bosnia, which was hosted by Luciano Pavarotti and featured a lineup designed to bridge the classical/pop divide.

Eclecticism, rendered with more good nature than real accomplishment, is the key characteristic of this mixed bag of performers gathering together in Modena, Italy, Luciano Pavarotti’s hometown, for a benefit concert for Bosnian children.

WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS

I went to the movies yesterday to see “Kubo“.

I was amazingly pleased by the whole production.

For those who like action, adventure, animated stories, this is a good one.

As the movie ended, I was more than pleased to hear the first notes of a familiar song which I couldn’t place initially.

What a pleasant surprise!

It was a cover of ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps‘, very well done.

But, who was singing this version?

Out comes the cell phone and the Schazam app.

Regina Spektor and Dario Marianelli.

I had to look it up and here’s what I found.

Prince’s Legendary Solo On “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”

The body of Prince Rogers Nelson died today and the universe lost a master whose music transcended the Earthly bounds of genre and gender.

The man put it best when he described himself by saying: “My name is Prince and I am funky.”

Anyone who tries to quantify his musical achievements or explain his abilities in a single tribute would be a fool for the attempt. But one way to understand the power of a true genius is seeing how brightly they shine when in the presence of other legends.

In the clip below, Prince goes supernova.  

Back in 2004, The Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame paid tribute to Beatle George Harrison with a performance of his classic, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

Recorded in 1968 for the Beatles’ “White Album,” the track was a rarity for the Fab Four because it featured a guest artist, Harrison’s friend Eric Clapton, on lead guitar.

For the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame’s tribute performance, it assembled a super-group featuring Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne from Electric Light Orchestra, Harrison’s son Dhani and on lead guitar, playing Clapton’s role, was Prince.

Santana covers The Beatles’ ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’

In honor of George Harrison’s birthday, recent premiere and encore presentations of “The Night That Changed America: The Grammy’s Salute to The Beatles” featuring George Harrison’s composition of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps;” Carlos Santana decided to cover that same song on his 2010 album, Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time.

Santana’s sensual version features India Arie on vocals and Yo-Yo Ma on cello. Harrison’s album track from The White Album features Eric Clapton on guitar.

Indie and pop music reviewer blogger, Cory Zechmann of “Silence No Good,” had this to say about Santana’s cover version of the 1968 Beatles classic:

I’ve heard quite a few Beatles cover songs before, but this one really does George Harrison’s original justice. I’ve only listened to a couple tracks off Santana’s album, Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time, but his rendition of this classic takes it.

You can’t beat a Beatle’s song redone by a master guitar player + beautiful vocals by India Arie — oh, and some damn good cello playin’.”
