This poem is timeless and immemorial. It is so ‘on point’ that is has been used frequently to describe current happenings.

A friend sent me this site and a link to this modern adaptation. It’s befitting to the current reality of the nation.

To see Donald Trump methodically lay into one group after another during the months of the presidential campaign has been to see Niemöller’s warning writ large across our screens.

But during all these months, I haven’t noticed much speaking out by one group in support of another.

It’s time for everyone to remember Niemöller’s words, and speak out in support of anyone who becomes the target of this hate-monger and his alt-right cohorts.

FIRST THEY CAME FOR THE UNDOCUMENTED AMERICAN

“First they came …” is a statement and poem written by Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis’ rise to power and subsequent purging of their chosen targets, group after group.

America and Americans have been know for their kind actions in benefit of others (so they claim).

Nevertheless, this belief is shattered as we see the heartlessness in the deportment of these undocumented Americans who do not fall under the category of criminals, drug dealers and the like.

Take into account the story of Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos.

As I write this, the phrase ‘cut your nose to spite your face’ comes to mind.

Garcia de Rayos came illegally to the United States from Guanajuato, Mexico, in the mid-1990’s with her parents when she was 14. She was arrested in 2008 in a workplace raid at Golfland Sunsplash, a waterpark in Mesa, Arizona.
She was convicted in March 2009 of criminal impersonation for having a fake Social Security number, a sixth-degree felony.

Where’s our Martin Niemöller?

This graph, presents a poem, which been shared plenty of times in the blogosphere. Please, allow me the opportunity to present it again.

I want to apply it to our present time.

I’ve seen it many times.

Every time it makes me think.

More so now, in view of the ugly turn in the road where American politics seem to be headed.

To me, the bottom line is that if you don’t speak up for others who are somehow persecuted, eventually your turn will come and there will be no one to stand up for your when you are persecuted.

It’s time to stand up and hold your ground.

Why am I bringing this up today? 

Those who stop by, read and follow this blog know that I’m a fervent advocate for the LGBT community, marriage equality and anti-discrimination in any form. 

As I troll through cyberspace, I found a disturbing piece yesterday about Arkansas and it was also mentioned today by a fellow blogger.

“On Friday,February 13,  Arkansas’s legislature passed a bill preventing cities and counties from enacting their own laws to protect LGBT people”

The bills – many modeled on a failed attempt in Arizona last year that drew condemnation from businesses, faith communities, and elected officials in both parties – put all state non-discrimination laws at risk of being undermined or mooted. They threaten not just the LGBT community, but women, members of minority faiths and other minority classes.
