DEATH TOLL
I knew this the moment Hurricane María’s path was confirmed.
I know my country, it’s geography, its people.
There was no way the ’64’ could be the official count.
I have no proper words to describe how this feels.
My heart and soul ache for my country!

REMEMBER THIS?
By Aaron Blake … May 29
In October 2018, in the course of claiming credit for a successful response, Drumpf decided to favorably compare the official death toll in Puerto Rico, which was then 16, to the death toll after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, which was 1,833.
DRUMPF: We’ve saved a lot of lives. If you look at the – every death is a horror. But if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina, and you look at the tremendous – hundred and hundred and hundreds of people that died. And you look at what happened here with really a storm that was totally overpowering. Nobody’s ever seen anything like this. And what is your death count at this point, 17?
PUERTO RICO GOV. RICARDO ROSSELLÓ: Sixteen, certified.
DRUMPF: Sixteen people, certified – 16 people versus in the thousands. You can be very proud of all of your people, all of our people working together.
“Sixteen versus literally thousands of people.”
The count now, according to Harvard, is 4,645 vs. 1,833.
More than twice as many people died because of Maria than Katrina, per the Harvard study.

Puerto Rico governor welcomes “real number” of Hurricane María deaths after shocking report
A new Harvard University study says the death toll from Hurricane María last year is dramatically larger than reported. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, estimates more than 4,600 people died on the island.
The official government death toll is just 64.
Researchers randomly knocked on doors and asked if anyone died there. There were more questions – but that’s how it started.
It took six weeks and $50,000 from Harvard to come up with a number that is stunning, reports CBS News’ David Begnaud.
“The negligence that allowed those lives to be lost, needs to be accounted for,” San Juan mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said.
Cruz has blasted Drumpf for being tone deaf and slow to respond. When asked to evaluate her own response she said,
“I know I didn’t get to everyone. We did the best we could, but that wasn’t’ good enough. That wasn’t good enough.”
Why this story is more than just a shocking number?
For every death that is certified by a government official to be related to Hurricane María, family members are eligible to have the federal government help pay for funeral expenses.
The numbers matter.

These medical struggles in Puerto Rico help explain a startling death toll estimate
~Published on May 29, 2018~
The death toll from Hurricane María in Puerto Rico last year was far larger than known, according to a new study.
At least 4,645 people on the island are estimated to have died as a result of the storm and devastation that followed, far exceeding the official number of 64. Judy Woodruff talks with Sarah Varney of Kaiser Health News.

AMERICAN PEOPLE STILL FIGHTING
Lawrence O’Donnell presented an excellent explanation on his weekly show about the struggle, protection, protest taking place in the Dakotas.
I found the video of his presentation and would like to share it with you.
Add to that, the fact that yesterday, the pipeline company attacked Native Americans with dogs and pepper spray.
This is something that needs to be shared because other stories in the media are overshadowing the fact that special interests are trying to ‘step out’ on complying with promises/treaties made to the Native Americans of this country.
This should be front page news!!
Shame, America, shame!

On September 3, the Dakota Access Pipeline Company attacked Native Americans with dogs and pepper spray as they protested against the $3.8 billion pipeline’s construction.

‘This Nation Was Founded on Genocide’
From the start of colonial intrusion, the free and original peoples of this hemisphere “have been treated as enemies and dealt with more harshly than any other enemy in any other war.”
While this in itself is not news, the source of this statement is.
This quote comes not from an activist, a historian or a researcher squirreled away in an obscure academic corner, but from a high-profile commentator speaking on MSNBC.
“After all our other wars we signed treaties and lived by those treaties,” noted Lawrence O’Donnell at the segment at the end of the August 25 edition of his nightly news show The Last Word.
“After World War 2 we then did everything we possibly could to help rebuild Germany.”
In other words, “no Native American tribe has ever been treated as well as we treated Germans after World War 2.”
O’Donnell issues this scathing indictment by way of explaining the peaceful protests against the Dakota Access oil pipeline. He talks of Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump’s fear of foreign invaders “who want to change our way of life” and notes that it’s “a fear that Native Americans have lived with every day for over five hundred years.”

“The original sin of this country is that we invaders shot and murdered our way across the land killing every Native American we could, and making treaties with the rest,” he says.
“This country was founded on genocide before the word genocide was invented, before there was a war crimes tribunal in The Hague.”
Nor does he end there. He explains how “Every. Single. Treaty.” has been broken; how only a few generations have passed since the “business of killing Indians” has ceased. He cites the camps near Standing Rock as potent reminders of despicable acts most Americans would rather forget … and on and on.
It’s a statement worth watching more than a few times, and he ends with a statement that resonates, a paying of respect to the resilience and strength of Natives:
“The people who have always known what is truly sacred in this world.”

THE PERFECT LETTER
To “Disturbed”, Heavy Metal Band
When it came time to pick a song for his freestyle, Nyle and Peta turned to the haunting cover. The only hitch was that pairs always need to obtain permission before using any song in their routines. So Nyle, who is deaf, took matters into his own hands and penned a touching letter to the band, which they shared on their website Monday, May 23.
“Nyle emailed us to ask for our permission to use our version of the song that has inspired him and hopes to convey an even bigger message to help people better understand the history of the deaf community,” the band wrote. “Tonight is the big night so help spread the word and cast your votes for Nyle!
This is not only a great honor for a Hard Rock/Metal band like us to be asked to be part of the biggest night of their show but for us to play a role in raising awareness for Nyle’s cause.”
This is his letter in full, as posted by the band:
My name is Nyle DiMarco. I am Deaf. I’m the fourth generation and I have over 25 Deaf members in my family. I am now in the semi finals towards the Mirror Ball on Dancing With The Stars.
I am writing this letter to let you know how much your song “Sound of Silence” means so much to me and my Deaf community and that I would love to dance to your song for the finals. I feel this is important for you to know that we, the Deaf people, underwent a terrible history and we are still stuck in the darkness. The darkness of oppression that your song truly reverberated to me.
Before the year 1880, we the Deaf people lived normal lives. We were perceived normal. We held political positions. We joined the army. We had jobs. We had an education through sign language that greatly benefited to our visual eyes and silent ears. It was until the Milan Conference in 1880 that led to language deprivation and … ultimately our culture, our job opportunities, and our intelligence. We were tortured. Our ancestors underwent electric shock chairs, surgeries (without anesthesia), and so many torturing methods just to help us regain our hearing. We were also punished if we used sign language. We were whipped. Slapped with our rulers. Abused. We were required to try and learn to speak (and that always, always miserably failed).
We also lost jobs. Many now perceive us as disabled, that we can’t serve the army, hold political positions, nor teach.
Because of the conference that almost led to the death of the Deaf culture (and was basically genocide and cultural-genocide), we are still trying to get out of the dark. I just founded Nyle DiMarco Foundation and our focus is on Deaf kids. We are working with state and U.S. senators to write and pass the bill that requires bilingualism (American Sign Language and English) because it was recently proven by science that it will benefit the Deaf child a lot more than just English only.
I am using my celebrity platform and especially on DWTS for good cause.
With your song … we are planning on showing my history’s terrible times through dancing … and to your powerful and moving song. We feel that with you, your song, and us, we will make/change history and help people better understand our history, and build allies all over the world to help better Deaf lives.
Help us resurface from our darkness, from the systematic oppression.
There is power in “Sound of Silence”.
We hope you will grant us the permission.
Let’s change history together!
Nyle DiMarco
