American Idiot is the seventh studio album by American rock band Green Day. Produced by Rob Cavallo, the album was released in the UK on September 20, 2004 and in the US on September 21, 2004 by Reprise Records.

When my band Green Day released our album American Idiot almost 13 years ago, we knew we were lobbing a grenade into the lap of the culture. With the fallout from 9/11 and the Iraq War revealing deep divisions in American society, our confrontational lyrics and attitude clearly touched a nerve, if our 15 million records sold are any indication. But now that enough time has passed to let the dust and controversy settle, I finally feel comfortable revealing that the “American Idiot” I sang about was none other than President George W. Bush.

The main reason we made George W. Bush the “American Idiot” is because he started a war.

Oh, the things ‘so-called President’ Drumpf will be greeted with this week when he visits London: demonstrators, a giant “Trump Baby” balloon – and a uniquely British musical protest.
For the past couple of weeks, a social media campaign has sought to make Green Day‘s classic 2004 jam “American Idiot” the No. 1 tune in the UK by the time Drumpf arrives Friday, July 13.

The “Get American Idiot to No.1 for Drumpf’s UK Visit” Facebook page has been advocating for some type of musical protest during a Drumpf visit to Britain pretty much since the start of his presidency. After Drumpf’s “working visit” – as opposed to a formal state visit – was announced in April, the effort went into overdrive.

This is not just a random walk down country controversy memory lane

It was March 10, 2003 that Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks told a crowd in London that they were “ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas,” referring to George W. Bush.

The resulting backlash was swift and severe.

The immediate reaction was not as hostile as one would expect.

The crowd cheered, and the superstar trio went to bed without a second thought about what they had just done. Within the week country radio stations were not only banning their music, they were renting steamrollers and hosting parties to crush all Dixie Chicks albums into dust.

It was as if an entire format had been waiting and planning for such a quip.

Politics aside, country music lost a superstar act that day.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Invictus Games were created to honor, educate and inspire, and the Opening Ceremony of this year’s event delivered the message with flying colors.

First lady Michelle Obama, Britain’s Prince Harry and Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman delivered stirring speeches after performances from the U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, soprano Laura Wright and singer-songwriter James Blunt.

“Let’s put on a hell of a show in honor of our fallen comrades who didn’t make it,” Prince Harry said.

“We are Invictus.”

The most powerful moment arguably belonged to U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Israel Del Toro Jr., who took the stage to a standing ovation and silenced the crowd with the story of his injury and subsequent months long coma and rehabilitation.

He described how he was severely burned when his vehicle struck a land mine in Afghanistan in 2005, followed by an arduous road to recovery.

Del Toro said the only time he doubted his resolve was when he saw his scarred face and worried how son Israel Del Toro III, who was 3 years old at the time, would react. Del Toro thanked wife Carmen and Izzy, now 13, for their love and care.

Most of the 10,000 or so spectators stood for the entire roll call of 14 participating nations — Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Jordan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States — as nearly 500 competitors and their families entered Champion Stadium at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Freeman powerfully orated the Invictus Pledge to the crowd to help conclude the ceremony:

What an incredible start to the Invictus Games 2016 – the spectacular opening ceremony in Orlando launches four days of sporting competition between injured servicemen and women and veterans from 14 countries.

THE CASE OF THE DIXIE CHICKS COMES TO MIND

There are people who staunchly believe it’s unpatriotic to criticize the president of the United States. Apparently, these people think that “he’s our president, right or wrong, and we all need to support him, you know”.

It’s funny, because I know a few people who tell me it’s unpatriotic, but I don’t remember those people saying that when George W. Bush was president.

Well, there’s nothing in the U.S. Constitution or the Bill of Rights that states we are obligated to support our government, or any elected official in it. There are laws against treasonous behavior and laws against making threats of bodily harm, as there should be.

But there is nothing obligating us to queue up and support all the policies and actions of those elected to public office. That’s a personal decision we are entitled to make. In fact, some would say it’s the solemn duty of every citizen to criticize elected officers when deserved, especially a president.

We live in a republic.

The president and commander in chief works for us. We “hire” him when we elect him. Then we pay close attention to what he does on the job. In your mind, if he makes good decisions and serves your interests, you rehire him. If he’s a poor leader and decision-maker, you try to fire him in the next election by voting for his opponent.
