Taiwan Call

The president-elect broke with four decades of diplomatic practice by talking on the phone Friday with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, a breach of protocol that could disrupt U.S.-China ties before the inauguration.

The 10-minute phone call is believed to be the first time that a U.S. president or president-elect and a Taiwanese leader have spoken since the late 1970’s.

The United States formally recognized the government in Beijing as representing China in 1978 and has pursued a “One China” policy since 1972, when then-President Richard M. Nixon visited the country. But although the U.S. government ended official relations with Taiwan in 1979, U.S. presidential administrations have maintained unofficial ties with the island territory, which has become a thriving democracy in recent decades.

Philippines Call

Trump’s phone call with Philippines leader deserves a lot more attention

President-elect Donald Trump’s telephone created plenty of news over the weekend – whether it was that “congratulatory” call with Taiwan’s leader, his tweets aimed at China, or even his criticism of SNL.

But there was another bit of news involving Trump’s phone that deserves a lot more attention – his call with Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte.

“In a statement Saturday, Duterte shared details of a seven-minute conversation that took place Friday, December 2. He said that during the call, Trump endorsed his campaign against drug users and dealers – a campaign that has left at least 4,500 Filipinos dead in about five months. Trump told Duterte that he was doing it the ‘right way,’ according to Duterte’s account,” the Washington Post writes.

And Reuters reports that, on that Friday call, Trump invited Duterte to the White House, according to a Philippines official.

Movie Time …. “Race: Jesse Owens and the 1936 Olympics”!!

~~February 20, 2016~~

Incredible true story of Gold Champion Jessie Owens

I went to the movies yesterday. I had seen the previews of this film and I knew it was a “must-see” for me.

I have seen some reviews. It seems that some critics feel that the film didn’t “perform” as expected. I don’t really follow what critics say. Most of the time, in my humble opinion .. like the weathermen … they are wrong.

I enjoyed the movie thoroughly.

For history buffs, for sports fans and for any interested in periods of time where ignorance, bigotry, racism and prejudice were the “law of the land”

(Wait … isn’t it still?)

Race is a 2016 biographical sports-drama film. It is the second feature biopic film about African American athlete Jesse Owens, who won a record-breaking four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games.

Directed by Stephen Hopkins and written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, the film stars Stephan James, Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons, William Hurt, and Carice van Houten.

Principal photography began on July 24, 2014, in Montreal, Canada. Forecast Pictures, Solo Films, and Trinity Race produced the film, Entertainment One released the film in Canada, Focus Features and TriStar Pictures in the United States on February 19, 2016, and Square One Entertainment will release in Germany on May 5, 2016. The film was supported by the Owens family, the Jesse Owens Foundation, the Jesse Owens Trust and the Luminary Group.

James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens (September 12, 1913 – March 31, 1980) was an American track and field athlete and four-time Olympic gold medalist.

Owens specialized in the sprints and the long jump and was recognized in his lifetime as “perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history”.

His achievement of setting three world records and tying another in less than an hour at the 1935 Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has been called “the greatest 45 minutes ever in sport” and has never been equaled.

At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin,Germany, Owens won international fame with four gold medals: 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4 × 100 meter relay.

He was the most successful athlete at the games and as such has been credited with “single-handedly crushing Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy.”

In 1936, Owens arrived in Berlin to compete for the United States at the Summer Olympics. According to fellow American athlete James LuValle, who won bronze in the 400 meters, Owens arrived in Berlin to a throng of fans, many of them young girls, yelling “Wo ist Jesse? Wo ist Jesse?” Many of them had come with scissors and had begun snipping at Owens’ clothing, forcing him to retreat back onto the train.

After that, when Owens left the athletes’ village, he usually had to go with some soldiers to protect him.

In contrast, Adolf Hitler was using the games to show the world a resurgent Nazi Germany. He and other government officials had high hopes that German athletes would dominate the games with victories. Meanwhile, Nazi propaganda promoted concepts of “Aryan racial superiority” and depicted others, including those of African descent, as inferior. Owens countered this by winning four gold medals.

…. and the rest is history ….

Google Doodle for today …. Emmy Noether’s 133rd birthday!!

~~March 23, 2015~~

New Google Doodle Honors Revolutionary Mathematician Emmy Noether

Why Einstein called her a ‘creative mathematical genius’

Emmy Noether was no ordinary person … need proof? How many people do you know can count Albert Einstein as a fan of their work?

The legendary physicist once referred to Noether as, “The most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced,” a fitting endorsement for a mathematician who made groundbreaking contributions to the fields of abstract algebra and theoretical physics, all the while overcoming deep seated sexism in her line of work.

For Noether’s 133rd birthday, it’s best to highlight the mathematician’s numerous accomplishments and shine a light on the influence Noether had on the world.

Noether’s work in algebra revolutionized the fields of mathematics and physics
Emmy Noether may not be a household name, but her compatriot Albert Einstein — someone who definitely is — once called her “the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher education of women began.”

Noether, born in a small town in Germany in 1882, would have been 133 on Monday, and Google is celebrating her life with a doodle. She is credited with revolutionizing the fields of mathematics and physics with her theory of non-commutative algebras, where answers are determined by the order in which numbers are multiplied.

After finishing her dissertation in 1907, Noether worked without pay at the university in her hometown of Erlangen for seven years, since women were not allowed to hold academic positions at the time. Her next post at the University of Göttingen was also denied official recognition for four years until 1919, because of objections from the institution’s staff.

She moved to Pennsylvania’s Bryn Mawr College in 1933 after Nazi Germany dismissed Jews from university positions, and died there two years later.

“I thought it would be best to highlight the mathematician’s numerous accomplishments and shine a light on the influence Noether had on the world,” wrote Sophie Diao, the doodle’s artist.

Movie Time …. “Unbroken”!!

~~December 29, 2014~~

Some of you may know that I worked as a physician with the Veterans Administration for almost 28 years. I worked with patients from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the current conflicts. All deserve their merit but the POW’s are way beyond deserving.

Watching this movie, reminded me of all those that I took care of.

A great movie to watch. Excellent directing job by Angelina Jolie and superb acting job by Jack O’Connell, the British actor who played Zamperini.

Louis Silvie “Louie” Zamperini (January 26, 1917 – July 2, 2014) was an American World War II prisoner of war survivor, Christian inspirational speaker, and Olympic distance runner. Zamperini is the subject of two biographies and the 2014 film Unbroken.

The film opens showing Louis “Louie” Zamperini flying as a bombardier of a United States Army Air Forces B-24 Liberator bomber, during an April 1943 bombing mission against the Japanese-held island of Nauru. The plane is badly damaged in combat, with a number of the crew injured. The brakes of the plane are shot away, but the pilot manages to bring it to a stop at the end of the runway thanks to a lucky flat tire.

The movie then flashes back to Louie’s childhood as a young Italian immigrant boy. Louie was a trouble maker, stealing, drinking liquor, and smoking, to the disappointment of his parents. He was picked on by other kids for being Italian.

One day Louie was caught looking up womens’ dresses from under bleachers during a track meet, and runs. His brother Peter sees how fast he runs, and decides to train him to be a runner. Peter trains Louie everyday to become his best. As he grows, Louie becomes an accomplished distance runner, earning him the nickname “The Torrance Tornado” (he grew up in Torrance, California), and eventually qualifies for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Louie does surprisingly well in the Olympics, coming in 8th and setting a record for speed in the final lap in the the 5000 metres race, running it in 56 seconds.

Returning to the present day, Louie and the surviving crew of the previous mission, along with replacement crewmen, are sent on a search and rescue mission with a plane that had previously been used for spare parts. Louie does not believe that the plane is airworthy, but the others tell him that it is suitable.

During the mission, however, both of the plane’s left engines fail, causing them to crash in the ocean. Louie and two other survivors, Mac and Phil, survive and live on two floating safety rafts. After three days a search plane flies over them but does not see them and they are unable to get its attention.

After 45 days, they get the attention of a Japanese plane which strafes the floating rafts but misses them. On the 46th day Mac dies, leaving only Louie and Phil.

On the 47th day, Japanese forces capture Louie and Phil and they become prisoners of war. The Japanese force Louie and Phil to tell them what they know about the Allies. Louie tells them that he doesn’t know anything because he’s been stuck on the boat for more than a month. Their captors do not believe them and send Louie and Phil to a POW. camp.

Louie and Phil are separated into different camps. At the camp in Tokyo where Zamperini is sent, he meets a Japanese guard, Mutsuhiro “Bird” Watanabe, who treats him very cruelly, in part because of Zamperini’s status as a former Olympian. “Bird” is especially tough on Louie out of jealousy, beating him often. Louie is given the opportunity to broadcast a message home saying that he is alive. When he refuses to broadcast a second message that would be anti American he is sent back to camp where Watanabe has all the other prisoners punch him for not showing respect.

After two years, Watanabe gets a promotion and is taken out of the camp where Zamperini is being held. Louie is grateful that he is gone. One night the camp is damaged when Tokyo is bombed by American forces. Louie and the other internees are forced to move to another camp where Zamperini discovers that Watanabe is in charge. The prisoners are now put to work loading coal barges. One day after Louis sprains his ankle and is unable to work, “Bird” tells him to lift a giant piece of wood. Louis successfully lifts and holds the wood, angering Watanabe leading to a harsh beating.

At the end of the war, Zamperini and the other prisoners in the camp are set free to return to their homes.

Back home in America, he kisses the ground and hugs his family.

At the end of the film there is a slideshow showing what happened after the war. Louis was married and had two children. Phil survived and eventually married his sweetheart. Mutsuhiro “Bird” Watanabe went into hiding for several years and successfully evaded prosecution in spite of being listed in the top 40 most-wanted Japanese war criminals by General Douglas MacArthur. Louie forgave his war-time captors and met with many of them. Watanabe, however, refused to meet with Zamperini.

In January of 1998, Louis had an opportunity to revisit his time as an Olympian when he ran a leg of the Olympic Torch relay for the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. He was four days short of his 81st birthday. The site for his leg of the relay was not far from one of the POW camps where he was held during the war.

Zamperini died on July 2, 2014 at age 97.

Watanabe was known as “The Bird,” and had gone into hiding during the American occupation of Japan. However, in 1952, the United States granted amnesty to Japanese war criminals, after which he emerged to become a businessman.

He died in April 2003.

We ALL are ONE!!

To start the day … “Let there be peace on Earth ….. “!!

~~December 29, 2014~~

This year is close to its end. It has been a trying year in so many aspects. Conflicts, war, injustices, kidnapping, bombings, invasion of free, established countries, power moves, power grabs, disappointing elections, persecution, inequality, racism, abuse by authority figures, killings …. the list continues. Feel free to add your own.

Soon a new year will start …. can we reverse course?

One summer evening in 1955, a group of 180 teenagers of all races and religions, meeting at a workshop high in the California mountains, locked arms, formed a circle and sang a song of peace. They felt that singing the song, with its simple basic sentiment – “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me,” helped to create a climate for world peace and understanding.

When they came down from the mountain, these inspired young people brought the song with them and started sharing it. And, as though on wings, “Let There Be Peace On Earth” began an amazing journey around the globe. It traveled first, of course with the young campers back to their homes and schools, churches and clubs. Then the circle started by the teenagers began to grow. Soon the song was being shared in all fifty states – at school graduations and a PTA meetings, at Christmas and Easter gatherings and as part of the celebration of Brotherhood Week.

It was a theme for Veteran’s Day, Human Rights Day and U.N. Day. 4-H Clubs and the United Auto Workers began singing it. So did the American Legion, the B’nai B’rith, the Kiwanis Clubs and CORE. It was taped, recorded, copied, printed in song books, and passed by word of mouth.

The song spread overseas to Holland, England, France, Germany, Lebanon, South America, Asia and Australia. The Maoris in New Zealand sang it – even the Zulus in Africa sang it.

Music for a peaceful mind.
“Let There Be Peace On Earth” -Sang by Vince Gill
Written by Jill Jackson Miller (1913-1995) American singer, actress

Jill Jackson’s early life was filled with tragedy and self-doubt. Although she had moderate success as a film star, she tried to kill herself after her marriage fell apart. Her unsuccessful suicide attempt led to a deep spiritual awakening, and after marrying songwriter Sy Miller they co-wrote the 1955 classic song of hope, “Let There Be Peace On Earth and Let It Begin With Me”. She called this song, “life-saving joy of God’s peace and unconditional love.”

Angelika’s Songs …. “All about that bass” by Meghan Trainor!!

~~October 9, 2014~~

This is Angelika, my oldest grand-daughter, you may have seen her here a few times. She is 9 years old.

She loves music, as much as I do. She’s been keeping me up to date with some of the new songs that are coming out. She knows the songs but doesn’t know the performer most of the time. I’ve trying to teach her it’s important to also know who is singing. Very frequently, we use the “Shazam” app to identify the singer/band.

She returned from her summer trip up north, she has started school. I’m a bit behind. She told me I better get on it. So, here I am!!

All About That Bass” is the debut single by American artist Meghan Trainor. It was released by Epic Records in June 2014 and was co-written by Meghan Trainor and Kevin Kadish. The song was produced by Kevin Kadish.

All instruments were played by Kevin Kadish (drums, bass and guitars) and David Baron (piano, saxophone, and Hammond B3 organ). Musically, “All About That Bass” is a pop and doo wop song that contains lyrics of body positive themes.

The song was positively received by critics who praised the catchy beat, lyrics, and message. The song has become a commercial success, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 becoming her first hit single on the chart. Internationally, it has topped the charts in Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, and peaked within the top ten of the charts in other countries.

Meghan Trainor sings about not being a size 2. And about magazines not being real with all their Photoshop. Come on now, make it stop! And this is such a great message! Show the world you can be whatever you want to be, in each and every size.

And I love this text:

“Yeah, my momma she told me don’t worry about your size
She says, boys they like a little more booty to hold at night”

Just don’t worry … accept yourself!

Embrace your body… that’s my message to you all!
