CLOSER TO A CURE?

This is a matter of personal opinion.

In no way is this post discouraging anyone from following their medical practitioners’ instructions.

Many times I wonder … why all the organizations asking for donations?

Why all the marathon runs, the activities, the fund raisers?

Why is it always the people, the grassroots who have to come up with ideas and funds?

What is really going on?

One wonders!

Canadian researchers find a simple cure for cancer, but major pharmaceutical companies are not interested.

Researchers at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada have cured cancer last week, yet there is a little ripple in the news or in TV. It is a simple technique using very basic drug. The method employs dichloroacetate, which is currently used to treat metabolic disorders.

So, there is no concern of side effects or about their long term effects.

This drug doesn’t require a patent, so anyone can employ it widely and cheaply compared to the costly cancer drugs produced by major pharmaceutical companies.

A WORLD OF WASTE

As I was growing up, I remember my parents telling me to eat everything off my plate.

There was no food to be wasted.

Other statements where: eat it all, there are people all over the world that don’t have enough to eat.

I’m sure many have heard those words.

We are also “informed” about how many people endure hunger worldwide.

We wonder why that happens when we are in the “land of plenty”.

Food waste or food loss is food that is discarded or lost uneaten. The causes of food waste or loss are numerous, and occur at the stages of production, processing, retailing and consumption.

As of 2013, half of all food is wasted worldwide, according to the British Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Today, America is considered to be one of the most wasteful countries in the world, especially when it comes down to food. We, as Americans, spend close to $200 billion a year just on waste and obesity alone. Most American households dump anywhere between 20-25% of the food they buy each year.

This adds to an alarming $43 billion a year that is, metaphorically speaking, just going down the drain!

Not only do households waste a lot of food, but grocery stores and restaurants do as well! It has been estimated that grocery stores and restaurants throw out over 35 million tons of food each year at an annual cost of $30 billion! And what’s really sad is almost 12% of the food waste that are in our landfills (see image below) come from unharvested crops that were never picked due to there not being a high demand for the crop at the time.

I'm originally from Puerto Rico. I was born in Santurce and raised in Rio Piedras. I currently live in Florida - since 1999. I have a doctorate degree in Medicine; completed in 1976. My Internal Medicine specialty was completed in 1979. Worked for Puerto Rico's health system until 1985. At this time, I'm happily retired after working for the federal government for almost 28yrs. I also worked for the government of Puerto Rico from 1979 through 1985 .... for a total of almost 40 years as a physician. I want to offer any knowledge that I have to anyone "out there" who is interested. My views are liberal in almost every sense. My knowledge is "eclectic" - a bit of everything. Music and reading are my passion. Blogging has also become a very interesting endeavor. Metaphysical topics attract me. I'm interested in news - reporting human issues like injustice, discrimination and abuse - the "wrongly" affected. My intention is to bring this knowledge to an understandable level and to help anyone in need. I'm open to questions and will answer them to the best of my ability.
