Ashley Nicolette Frangipane (born September 29, 1994), known by her stage name Halsey, is an American singer and songwriter. She started songwriting at the age of 17. In 2014, she signed her first recording contract with Astralwerks and released her debut EP, titled Room 93. Her debut studio album, Badlands, was released in 2015.
Halsey was born and raised in New Jersey as Ashley Frangipane.
She is of Italian, Hungarian, and Irish descent on her mother’s side and African American on her father’s side. Growing up, Halsey played the violin, viola, and cello until moving onto the acoustic guitar when she was 14.
In one of her first interviews, Halsey stated she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder around the age of 16 or 17. When she was 18, Halsey encountered financial trouble and music became a way to pay her rent. She played numerous acoustic shows in different cities under various stage names.
She chose “Halsey” as her moniker because it is an anagram of her real name as well as a street in Brooklyn where she spent a lot of time as a teenager.
Halsey Covered “Love Yourself,” Swapped “Love” for the Word Bieber Actually Meant
By Laura Bradley
Don’t be deceived by the seemingly sweet and affirming title of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself”: the “love” has a very clear, not-so-sweet double entendre.
Now Halsey, the artist who lent her vocal talents on another Purpose track, “The Feeling,” has covered the song, with a few virtuosic flourishes.
Most notably, her chorus is a little more direct:
She went with “Fuck yourself.”
The cover has a gentle, smoky timbre, which makes the lyric change stand out even more. Halsey’s lyrics generally tend to be graphic and direct. And for those of us who have always thought “love yourself” sounds like a lame radio edit of what Bieber probably meant to say, this amendment was long overdue.
Halsey channels her inner-belieber in the Like A Version studio and covers Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’.
Like A Version is a segment on Australian radio station triple j. Every Friday morning a musician or band comes into the studio to play one of their own songs and a cover of a song they love.
