The heart-stopping anthem released on Monday,  March 19, by Lin Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt to celebrate the “March For Our Lives” gun violence prevention actions this weekend needs no introduction, only some background.

The three-minute song, “Found Tonight,” mashes up Miranda’s “Story Of Tonight” from his smash musical “Hamilton” and the song “You Will Be Found,” from Platt’s star turn in “Dear Evan Hansen,” by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

This means the song draws from one story about teenage revolutionaries, and another about teens triumphing over despair.

The song begins with a rewritten line from “Hamilton” – instead of “we may not live to sing our glory,”

Platt sings, “we may not yet have reached our glory.”

All the proceeds from downloads of the song go to “March For Our Lives,” a gun violence prevention demonstration that will take place on March 24 in Washington DC.

Platt’s extraordinary gift for vulnerability and vocal sublimity are on display here, as is Miranda’s once-in-a-generation passion.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SCREWING PUERTO RICO

NOTHING NEW

I must confess that I didn’t really know the complex history that exists between Puerto Rico, my country, and the mighty imperialistic U.S. of A.

I’m truly ashamed to say that I didn’t find out about this history until 2015 when I found out about and read the book written by Nelson A. Denis “War Against All Puerto Ricans‘.

I need to say that I grew up under the shadow of the ‘greatest country in the world’ and believed every word I was programmed with. The information provided in the book, very well written, researched and totally documented, wasn’t taught in the private school that I went to.

I went to a Catholic school in Río Piedras, somewhat a suburb of San Juan, ran by American nuns and priests.

Samantha Bee takes a humorous look at a synopsis of this history in light of the humanitarian disaster caused by Hurricane María and the response by the American government lead by the “Moron-in-Chief“, Drumpf.

The American government’s slow response to the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria is actually nothing new.
On Wednesday’s “Full Frontal,”, October 4, Samantha Bee explained that the way Drumpf “helped” storm-ravaged Puerto Ricans followed a 100-year-old pattern.

“If you’re shocked by this, then you are not Puerto Rican,” said Bee.

“Truth is, we’ve been treating them like the unwelcome nephew under America’s stairs for more than a century.”

Aided by “Hamilton” star Javier Muñoz, who has family on the island, Bee then dissected the island’s history of “getting screwed with their pantalones on by the United States.”

A recent episode of This American Life featured a song written by Sara Bareilles and sung by Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr. imagining what President Barak Obama might be thinking about Donald Trump and the current election.

Now, there’s a video to accompany it. 

The four minute visual shows Odom Jr. in the studio with a band, delivering and impassioned performance as the lyrics roll out at the bottom of the screen.

Randy Rainbow Turned Mike Pence’s Disastrous Trip to ‘Hamilton’ into a Musical Skewering 

If you saw the #MikePenceGoesToHamilton fiasco unfold over the weekend, November 18, you knew it was only a matter of time before Randy Rainbow turned the entire incident into a very Hamilton musical.

In his latest musical parody of the election that came to dinner, Rainbow gives Mike Pence and Donald Trump some advice: don’t go back to Broadway–and grow up.

Set to the tune of “You’ll Be Back” (originally performed by Jonathan Groff) from Hamilton, Rainbow skewers both Trump and Pence. Referring to Trump’s Twitter meltdown over Pence being booed, Rainbow suggested, “don’t denounce a Broadway play when you won’t denounce the KKK.”

On Sunday, June 12, when Mr. Miranda accepted his award for best score for “Hamilton” at the Tony Awards, his second Tony win in this category, he said he was too old to freestyle.

So he wrote a sonnet instead, addressing his love for his wife, Vanessa Nadal, as well as the shooting massacre that left 50 people dead early Sunday in Orlando, Fla.

My wife’s the reason anything gets done
She nudges me towards promise by degrees
She is a perfect symphony of one
Our son is her most beautiful reprise.
We chase the melodies that seem to find us
Until they’re finished songs and start to play
When senseless acts of tragedy remind us

God bless you, Lin-Manuel. Pray for Orlando.Pray for an end to hate in all its twisted forms. And most importantly, pray for love.

I haven’t been fortunate enough to see Lin-Manuel in Hamilton (and I’m sure now I never will)… But the first time I saw him interviewed, I became a huge fan. And my love for him grows more and more with every public statement he makes.
Passion for your art is a rare, beautiful, and precious thing. I’ve never seen anyone exude passion — and COMPASSION — as much as Lin-Manuel does.

This sonnet is (rightfully) getting worldwide attention, but you can find the same humanity throughout his work, and his life.
We so rarely reward art in its purest, most authentic form. For that reason alone, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s well-deserved success feels like a victory for artistic souls everywhere. I hope he never stops creating, and inspiring, and challenging us to do better.
