NOVEMBER BEFORE DECEMBER

HELLO NOVEMBER

Halloween is done. “El Día de los Muertos” is also done.

It’s time to start stocking up for Christmas, at least in the mind of almost every Puerto Rican.

This is a fridge.

You see “coquito” and “pasteles”.

These are staples of any Puerto Rican Christmas.

It’s a type of eggnog drink (with alcohol, of course) and a typical cooking confection made with green bananas and other root plants.

‘Pasteles’ are somewhat like ‘tamales’.

Nothing like the original!

WHAT IS THAT?

Remember that Puerto Rico is a colony of the mighty United States.

All of the celebration dates have, by cefault, been adopted and embraced by many Puerto Ricans.

Halloween is no exception.

Puerto Rican kids look forward the costumes and the ‘trick or treating’.

The one thing that I didn’t do as a child was carve a pumpkin.

And, proud to say, that I did last year.

It was daunting but then I got the hang of it.

Not that I want to do it again.

I have always written about Puerto Rican creativity.

Well, this might as well be another example.

The pumpkin has been replaced by a breadfruit!

BREADFRUIT

Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a species of flowering tree in the mulberry and Jackfruit family (Moraceae) originating in the South Pacific and that was eventually spread to the rest of Oceania.

British and French navigators introduced a few Polynesian seedless varieties to Caribbean islands during the late 18th century, and today it is grown in some 90 countries throughout South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean, Central America and Africa.

Its name is derived from the texture of the moderately ripe fruit when cooked, similar to freshly baked bread; it has a potato-like flavor.

Two Latina Sisters Trolled Eric Trump on the Campaign Trail in the Best Way Possible

Donald Trump loves to talk about how much he loves “the Latinos” but that “appreciation” apparently doesn’t extend to actually learning Spanish, as sisters Annie and Ceci Cardelle can attest.

These two new American treasures (and Hillary supporters) heard Eric Trump was campaigning for his dad in their town of Salisbury, North Carolina, and decided to show their displeasure on their shirts, on which they wrote in black sharpie,

“Latinas Contra Trump.”

The pair, who are second-generation Cuban-Americans, told Buzzfeed that they ” were protesting the Trump campaign’s particular treatment of Hispanics and Latino immigrants in this country.”

Because of the current political climate, Latinos are fully at the forefront of the national discourse.

However, one partivular candidate and many of his followers may equate ‘Latino’ to ‘Mexican’.

Take a note, the Mexican flag is representative of their country.

Yet, there are as many other flags as there are countried in Central and South America.

A can opener (in North American English and Australian English) or tin opener (in British and Commonwealth English) is a device used to open tin cans (metal cans).

Although preservation of food using tin cans had been practiced since at least 1772 in the Netherlands, the first can openers were not patented until 1855 in England and 1858 in the United States.

These early openers were basically variations of a knife, though the 1855 design continues to be produced. The first can opener consisting of the now familiar sharp rotating cutting wheel was invented in 1870 but was considered too difficult to operate for the ordinary consumer. A breakthrough design came in 1925 when a second, serrated wheel was added to hold the cutting wheel on the ring of the can.

This easy to use design has become one of the most popular can opener models.
