SACRED BURIAL GROUNDS

Just put yourself, for one second, in the situation described above.

What is the difference between Arlington Cemetery and the Native American Sacred Burial Grounds??

Really, truly … what is the difference?

Can anyone venture and tell me there’s a difference?

Where’s the outrage, the scrutiny and the mainstream media coverage?

The Recognition of Native American sacred sites in the US could be described as:

“specific, discrete, narrowly delineated location on Federal land that is identified by an Indian tribe, or Indian individual determined to be an appropriately authoritative representative of an Indian religion, as sacred by virtue of its established religious significance to, or ceremonial use by, an Indian religion”.

The sacred places are believed to “have their own ‘spiritual properties and significance'”. Ultimately, Indigenous peoples who practice their religion at a particular site, they hold a special and sacred attachment to that land sacred land.

NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH

I’m 13 years-old and as an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, I’ve lived my whole life by the Missouri River. It runs by my home in Fort Yates North Dakota and my great grandparents original home was along the Missouri River in Cannon Ball. The river is a crucial part of our lives here on the Standing Rock Reservation.

But now a private oil company wants to build a pipeline that would cross the Missouri River less than a mile away from the Standing Rock Reservation and if we don’t stop it, it will poison our river and threaten the health of my community when it leaks.

In Dakota/Lakota we say “mni Wiconi.” Water is life.

Native American people know that water is the first medicine not just for us, but for all human beings living on this earth.

The Dakota Access Pipeline has faced months of resistance from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and members of nearly 100 more tribes from across the U.S. and Canada.

Amy Goodman and Democracy Now! producers were on the ground Saturday, September 3, when the pipeline company attacked Native American protesters with dogs and pepper spray.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe filed evidence Friday that the proposed Dakota Access pipeline route falls directly on sacred Sioux sites.

Hours later, Goodman and Democracy Now! producers witnessed unexpected construction at one of the sites.

“This was a Labor Day weekend.

The bulldozers don’t work on the weekend,” Goodman tells Joy-Ann Reid.

“But this weekend, the day after they gave over that information, they’re there bulldozing over those sites.”

I'm originally from Puerto Rico. I was born in Santurce and raised in Rio Piedras. I currently live in Florida - since 1999. I have a doctorate degree in Medicine; completed in 1976. My Internal Medicine specialty was completed in 1979. Worked for Puerto Rico's health system until 1985. At this time, I'm happily retired after working for the federal government for almost 28yrs. I also worked for the government of Puerto Rico from 1979 through 1985 .... for a total of almost 40 years as a physician. I want to offer any knowledge that I have to anyone "out there" who is interested. My views are liberal in almost every sense. My knowledge is "eclectic" - a bit of everything. Music and reading are my passion. Blogging has also become a very interesting endeavor. Metaphysical topics attract me. I'm interested in news - reporting human issues like injustice, discrimination and abuse - the "wrongly" affected. My intention is to bring this knowledge to an understandable level and to help anyone in need. I'm open to questions and will answer them to the best of my ability.
