All eight recipients of the prestigious W.E.B. Du Bois Medal were honored in a ceremony held Thursday, October 11, afternoon by the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard “in recognition of their contributions to African and African American culture and the life of the mind.”

As requested by Kaepernick, his speech at the ceremony was not broadcast live (there was a live stream of the event available).

In his speech, Kaepernick encouraged further protests against racial inequality.

‘Crocodile Hunter’ Steve Irwin Is Remembered With a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

By CASEY QUACKENBUSH
Australian wildlife expert and television personality Steve Irwin, also known as the ‘Crocodile Hunter,’ was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Thursday, April 26.

Irwin’s widow, Terri, and their two children, Bindi and Robert, attended the ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

“Steve always said that he hoped his message of conservation would live on forever,” said Terri Irwin. “It means the world to us that Steve’s memory will live on in so many ways.”

Irwin was killed in 2006 by a stingray that pierced his heart while he was filming an underwater documentary, Ocean’s Deadliest.

Martin Luther King Jr., an American clergyman and civil rights leader, was shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.

He was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital, and was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m. CST. He was a prominent leader of the Civil Rights Movement and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who was known for his use of nonviolence and civil disobedience.

Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 through 1968.

He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights by using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.

King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and in 1957 became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). With the SCLC, he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham, Alabama.

He also helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

…. and the rest is history …

NINE MONTHS TODAY

On a day like today, 9 months ago, I woke up to the news.

It came with a deep, gut-wrenching feeling!

49 people dead, many injured, in a gay club relatively near my house, on Latin night.

I could’ve been there.

Some friends could’ve been there too.

Time goes by so fast!!

~~March 8, 2017~~

International Women’s Day

March 8 is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since in the early 1900’s – a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

International Women’s Day is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity.

No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day.

Many organizations declare an annual IWD theme that supports their specific agenda or cause, and some of these are adopted more widely with relevance than others.

bline

“The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights,” says world-renowned feminist, journalist and social and political activist Gloria Steinem.

Thus International Women’s Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action – whatever that looks like globally at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women’s Day has been occurring for well over a century – and continue’s to grow from strength to strength.

~Ellen DeGeneres thanks Barack Obama for ‘changing my life’~
CHANCELLOR AGARD

Posted on January 19, 2017

In honor of President Barack Obama’s final day in office, Ellen DeGeneres took a moment out of Thursday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show, January 19, to pay tribute to him and First Lady Michelle Obama.

“I want to personally thank him for changing my life,” said DeGeneres. “I am a legally married woman because of him, and so is my wife.”

She continued: “His courage and compassion created equality for everyone. He moved us forward and made more happen in the past eight years than I ever dreamed possible. I love him. I love Michelle.”

Then, DeGeneres showed a video compilation of her time with the Obamas over the years. The touching send-off featured everything from Barack’s first appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2007 to Barack honoring DeGeneres with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November.
