To start the day …. “BRIT Awards: David Bowie Tribute …. “!!

~~February 26, 2016~~

David Bowie’s death stunned all of those aware of his career.

He was a member of the British culture but he was a citizen of the world. As such, his work played a major role in the world’s music scene.

His loss is huge.

Even though, it was known that he was ill, the news traveled the world faster than the speed of light.

We ALL lost a master at his trade, an incredible musician and performer, a wonderful father and an unique human being.

It’s only fitting … this tribute.

The video is a bit long but it’s worth a watch.

Fare thee well, Starman!

We ALL are connected through MUSIC!!

~Emotional tribute to David Bowie~

Annie Lennox

“On the 10th of January this year, the world was stunned and shaken by the news that David Bowie had suddenly passed away. I suspect that everyone is still trying to process this sadly unexpected event. Even if they didn’t know him personally, many people must feel as if things will never be quite the same again. He had that special kind of significance.

“For me, it’s almost impossible to mention Bowie’s name in the past tense. Everything he represented as an artist was, and always will be, vital and incredibly present. As a cutting-edge artistic genius, he continues to live on through his music. David Bowie is deeply embedded in the heart of British culture, as a fixture within our collective inner psyche, influencing every decade from the moment he first appeared on the airwaves with ‘Space Oddity’ in 1969 right up to the present day.

“The Brits Icon Award is only presented to unparalleled artists whose writing, recording and performance set them apart as having made a lasting impact on the nation’s culture, recognizing the very highest level of British music achievement. To accept the award, I’d now like to invite David’s dear friend Gary Oldman to the stage.”

Gary Oldman

“We are all coming to terms with the magnitude of David’s passing. The Jones family lost a husband and a father. Those closest to David lost a dear friend and the world lost a man, an artist of transcendent talent. As Annie so gracefully said, David’s contribution, his influence on popular music – on culture itself – has no equal. He was the very definition, the living embodiment of that singular word, ‘icon’. I am so deeply touched and honored to be here tonight to accept this award for David and his family.

Honoring the “Charleston9” …. “Confederate Flag comes down Capitol grounds, Charleston, SC”!!

~~July 10, 2015~~

As the confederate flag is taken down from the Capitol grounds of Charleston, South Carolina, it’s important to honor the “Charleston9”.

This event shouldn’t be remembered by the perpetrator.

The nine victims should be honored and remembered … by name.

“On the evening of June 17, 2015, a mass shooting took place at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, United States.

Nine people were killed, including the senior pastor, state senator Clementa C. Pinckney; a tenth victim survived.

The congregation is one of the United States’ oldest black churches and has long been a site for community organization around civil rights.

I’ve been seeing way too much coverage of the terrorist rather than of the victims, which isn’t right, so I made this. Went more realistic to get more of a resemblance, and all information is based off what I could find on the internet. Hopefully it’s all accurate, if something isn’t, please tell me.

Such a horrible event.”

Honoring B.B. King …. “The King of Blues”!!

~~May 15, 2015~~

The Thrill is gone

Blues legend B.B. King died peacefully in his sleep Thursday night, May 14, 2015,  at his home in Las Vegas. He was 89. King won 15 Grammy Awards, released more than 50 albums, sold millions of records worldwide and was inducted into both the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. King performed more than 100 shows a year into his 80’s and was a mentor to countless musicians including Eric Clapton.

He’s perhaps best known for his song “The Thrill is Gone.”

Mississippi’s own B.B. King

Riley B. King (September 16, 1925 – May 14, 2015), known by his stage name B.B. King, was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist.

Rolling Stone ranked King number 6 on its 2011 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time (previously ranked number 3 in the 2003 edition of the same list). He was ranked No. 17 in Gibson’s “Top 50 Guitarists of All Time“. According to Edward M. Komara, King “introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that would influence virtually every electric blues guitarist that followed.”

King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

He is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname “The King of the Blues“, and one of the “Three Kings of the Blues Guitar” (along with Albert King and Freddie King).

King was also known for performing tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing at more than 200 concerts per year on average into his 70’s. In 1956, he reportedly appeared at 342 shows.

In 1990, King was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President George H.W. Bush. In 2006, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential blues guitarists of all time, inspiring countless other electric blues and blues rock guitarists.

Born and raised by underpaid public school teachers in Sanford, Fla., Andy Marlette graduated from the University of Florida and became staff editorial cartoonist at the Pensacola News Journal in 2007.

Marlette received a priceless editorial cartoon education while living with his uncle and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Doug Marlette in Hillsborough, N.C.

Doug’s tragic death in July of 2007 made evermore poignant the elder Marlette’s fierce and faithful devotion to the art form of editorial cartooning as a cornerstone of American free speech. With this in mind, Andy works daily to learn and uphold the disciplines and values passed on to him by his late uncle.
