~Senate Has Passed the GOP’s Sweeping $1.5 Trillion Tax Reform Plan~

 Jubilant Republicans pushed on early Wednesday, December 20, to the verge of the most sweeping rewrite of the nation’s tax laws in more than three decades, a deeply unpopular bill they insist Americans will learn to love when they see their paychecks in the new year.

After midnight, the Senate narrowly passed the legislation on a party-line 51-48 vote.

On Tuesday night, December 19,  in the Capitol, any residual semblance of bipartisanship – and you would have been hard-pressed to find one in recent months – wheezed its death rattle. The Republican-controlled Congress passed a largely unpopular tax reform bill along strict party lines in both the House and the Senate; not a single Democrat in either chamber voted “yes.”

~~VERY PERSONAL THOUGHTS~~

I was born in an Island in the Caribbean, an island surrounded by water, big water. My country is, and will always be, Puerto Rico. I was born in 1950.

Puerto Rico became a commonwealth in 1952.

This means that I grew up under the shade and influence of the United States of America.

I went to a private, Catholic school from kindergarten through high school. That’s a total of thirteen years of learning, adapting and embracing the “American way”.

These were my ingrained perceptions.

It was my dream to come to the United States and live the rest of my life here. I was able to live my dream in 1999 when I moved to Florida. That year, my dream come true. As years have gone by, I have matured, aged, (if you will) and I have seen the American nature up close and personal.

I understand that there’s not a thing that is perfect, there’s not a nation that can claim to be the perfect place but the America that I was taught about throughout my formative years was the “best country in the world”. I believed that.

It was ingrained in my mind and my nature … I believed it all hook, line and sinker.

I must confess that I haven’t really been a political person. Politics started to creep a bit into my mind during the Obama presidency. At that time is was barely on the sidelines of my perspective.

It wasn’t until that questionably ‘memorable‘ day when HE descended the escalator and began his tirade about the Mexican people that I started paying close attention.

Much has been said since that moment. Many unsavory comments, actions, statements, bold-faced lies have I seen and heard from the individual who rode down that escalator.

Those sane Americans who have been paying attention, who have a shred of decency, morality, honesty know what I mean.

Today, as I write this, I am very sad to see where the American governance has descended to.

Republicans just declared war on the middle class, looted America wholesale, and pulled off the biggest robber baron heist in modern history.

Let’s call it what it is:

TREASON against their fellow countrymen.

DON’T YOU EVER FORGET THIS!

Today, my alliance is to my country, Puerto Rico.

Today the ingrained perceptions of America, which I’ve held for more than 60 years, have been shattered to smithereens by the actions of this ‘so-called president’ and the shameless enabling of the Republican members of Congress.

These enabling members of Congress have gone along with HIM because there are secondary personal gains for them.

THIS IS NOT THE AMERICA I KNEW, THIS IS NOT THE AMERICA I ADMIRED, THIS IS NOT THE AMERICA THAT I WANT TO BE A PART OF.

I came across the video included below yesterday.

Tears flowed on their own.

In my personal case, I wasn’t really aware about details related to the political status of North Korea. I knew only a bit.

In light of the prominence given to this country by the actions of the ‘so-called president’ as they relate to North Korea, I am paying more attention.

This is a ‘must watch’ video.

Even though the video was posted in 2014, most likely it still applies today.

Yeonmi Park has grown up to be a beautiful, free young woman!

North Korean woman, Yeonmi Park had a packed audience in tears as she relayed an account of her escape from ‘the darkest place in the world’ at the peace and conflict plenary session. The 21 year old said she was brainwashed by the propaganda of Kim Jong Il and three generations of imprisonment or execution was imposed on anyone that expressed doubt about the regime.

“North Korea is the only country in the world that executes people for making unauthorized international phone calls. North Koreans are being terrorized today,” said Park.

“When I was 9 years old, I saw my friend’s mother publicly executed. Her crime? Watching a Hollywood movie.There’s only one channel on TV. There’s no Internet. We aren’t free to move, sing, read, wear or think what we want,” Park continued. The repressive dictatorship led Park’s older sister to escape and gave Park and her mother no option but to escape themselves in order to find her sister. However as they escaped across the border, Yeonmi, at 13 years old witnessed her mother’s rape.

“I saw my mother raped. The rapist was a Chinese broker. I will never forget his face. The rapist had targeted me. I was only 13 years old,” said an emotional Park.

Park called on chinese One Young World delegates to speak out and petition china to stop repatriation, and called on everyone in attendance to support North Korean refugees that flee the country.

What followed was a standing ovation lasting over three minutes and many delegates leaving the auditorium red-eyed with tears, taking a moment to reflect on the atrocities of North Korea.

Joe Biden Defends Veterans After Donald Trump’s PTSD Remarks

Vice President Joe Biden defended veterans during an impassioned speech Monday, October 3, after Donald Trump’s comments about soldiers who suffer from PTSD.

The Republican presidential nominee was addressing PTSD and suicides among those returning home from war before a veterans group in Virginia when he said those in the room were “strong” and could “handle” the horrors of war.

However, “a lot of people can’t handle it,” Trump added.

Many took his phrasing to mean soldiers who can’t handle PTSD are weak.

Biden, who said he has been “in and out” of Afghanistan and Iraq more than 29 times, said Trump was not intentionally trying to offend but that the real estate mogul “doesn’t get it,” according to The Hill.

I don’t understand why Democrats are so nice and gracious.

Here is Vice President Biden excusing Trump’s comments, stating

“I don’t think he was trying to be mean. He is just so thoroughly, completely uninformed,” Biden said.

They are not nice or gracious.

They ARE mean, vindictive, incompetent and unreasonable.

Maybe it’s time to play by their rules.

THINK ABOUT IT

Almost as long as there has been life, war has been a part of it.

Mankind continues to wage war even though the consequences often breed nothing but misery.

However, when a person is called to defend his or her country, or protect other defenseless people, it is his duty to fight.

There is no question that there is evil in the world and we must not rest on our laurels and say it is none of our business.

We cannot stand by and watch while others are being persecuted.

It is the duty of mankind to uphold justice.

Terror and devastation everywhere

I don’t know what to say

Today we memorialize the death of Matthew Shepard, 17 years ago today. He died from injuries sustained in a hate crime several days earlier, having never woken up. He was left for dead, lashed to a fence in the bitter cold of a Wyoming winter.

What some people don’t know is this was not the first time this poor young man had experienced the horror of violent crime. Three years earlier, on a class trip to Morocco, he was beaten and raped. Almost to much to comprehend the torture this man endured during his short adulthood.

Today he would be just a few months shy of his 38th birthday.

Matthew Shepard

(1976 – 1998)

Since 1998, the legacy of this remarkable young man’s life has challenged and inspired millions of  individuals to erase hate in all forms. Although his life was short, it  continues to have a great impact on both young and old alike.

The story of Matthew Wayne Shepard begins on December 1, 1976 when he was  born prematurely to Judy and Dennis Shepard in the small city of Casper, Wyoming. Matthew attended school in Casper until his junior year of  high school when he finished his primary education at The American School in Switzerland. His experience abroad fueled his love for travel. He took the opportunity to explore Europe and learn multiple languages including German and Italian.

Matthew was an optimistic and accepting young man. He always put his  family and friends first and had a special gift of relating to almost  everyone. He was the type of person that was very approachable and always looked to new challenges. Matthew had a great passion for equality and always stood up for the acceptance of people’s differences. Throughout his life he expressed his love for acting by becoming very  active in community theater both on and off stage.

Matthew’s college career took him to a number of different  universities and later ended up studying political science, foreign relations and languages at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. He was extremely interested in politics and was chosen as the student representative for the Wyoming Environmental Council.

Shortly after midnight on October 7 1998, Matthew Shepard, met Aaron James McKinney and Russel Arthur Henderson in a bar. After Shepard admitted he was gay, they talked him into leaving with  them, at which point they drove to a secluded location outside Laramie, stole his wallet, tied him to a fence, pistol-whipped him senseless, and left him for dead in freezing weather. He was discovered 18 hours later, his unconscious body initially mistaken for a scarecrow.

Matthew died on October 12 at 12:53 am at a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. His entire family was by his side for the last few days of  his life. His funeral was attended by friends and family from around the world and gained the appropriate media attention that brought Matthew’s story to the forefront of the fight against hate.

Matthew was promptly made an example of by the Right Reverend Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, who claimed divine  retribution had killed Shepard for the sin of being a homosexual.  

Phelps and his flock picketed Shepard’s funeral on 17 October 1998,  holding signs proclaiming “GOD HATES FAGS” and similar slogans, later  installing a “memorial” on the church website which proclaims: Matthew Shepard has been in hell for 2102 days. Eternity – 2102 days = Eternity.

This tragedy helped the world wake up to the fact that hate and discrimination still lives in our communities, our schools and our  families.

Although his life was cut short, the impact of his spirit is great.

Created to honor Matthew in a manner that was appropriate to his  dreams, beliefs, and aspirations, the Foundation seeks to “Replace Hate  with Understanding, Compassion, & Acceptance” through its varied  educational, outreach and, advocacy programs and by continuing to tell  Matthew’s story.

To encourage respect for human dignity and difference by raising awareness, opening dialogues, and promoting positive change.
