Meryl Streep Responds to Drumpf Calling Her “Over-rated”

Meryl Streep likes to load her dishwasher. She likes to sit quietly and read. She likes to garden. Most of all, as she told the audience at the Human Rights Campaign Greater New York Gala on Saturday night, February 11, she likes to “stay the fuck home.”

But the actress, who, along with late-night host Seth Meyers, was the recipient of the HRC Ally for Equality Award, left the house to stand in support of her LGBTQ friends in the Drumpf era.

She said all of this during her speech without even mentioning the president’s name.

The legendary actress, who previously delivered a fiery take-down of Drumpf at the Golden Globes (also without saying his name), told attendees at the HRC gala that in the end, the current administration could serve as a valuable wake-up call.

“If we live through this precarious moment . . . if his catastrophic instinct to retaliate doesn’t lead us to nuclear winter, we have much to thank this president for, because he will have woken us up to how fragile freedom really is,”

she said to the crowd gathered at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

Streep experienced Drumpf’s famously thin skin after her Globes oration in January when he tweeted that the actress was “over-rated.”

The actress and honoree also had a response for Drumpf’s claim.

“Yes, I am the most overrated, over-decorated, and currently, over-berated actress . . . of my generation,” she joked.

“But that is why you invited me here! Right?”

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award bestowed by the President of the United States and is – along with the comparable Congressional Gold Medal – the highest civilian award of the United States.

It recognizes those individuals who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors”.

The award is not limited to U.S. citizens and, while it is a civilian award, it can also be awarded to military personnel and worn on the uniform.

A PROCLAMATION

Since our founding, America has advanced on an unending path toward becoming a more perfect Union.  This journey, led by forward-thinking individuals who have set their sights on reaching for a brighter tomorrow, has never been easy or smooth.

The fight for dignity and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people is reflected in the tireless dedication of advocates and allies who strive to forge a more inclusive society.  They have spurred sweeping progress by changing hearts and minds and by demanding equal treatment — under our laws, from our courts, and in our politics.  This month, we recognize all they have done to bring us to this point, and we recommit to bending the arc of our Nation toward justice.

Last year’s landmark Supreme Court decision guaranteeing marriage equality in all 50 States was a historic victory for LGBT Americans, ensuring dignity for same-sex couples and greater equality across State lines. For every partnership that was not previously recognized under the law and for every American who was denied their basic civil rights, this monumental ruling instilled newfound hope, affirming the belief that we are all more free when we are treated as equals.

What the heck is happening to this country?

The doors of hatred, bigotry and persecution have opened.

Hate and discrimination are pouring down through opened flood gates.

This is the sad reality of our times.

What happened to:

The second paragraph in the Declaration of Independence states

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

Why this obsession about what people have between their legs?

Why this crap about security in bathrooms?

These seem to be demons that live in the psyche of very narrowminded people.

Scared people …. scared of what?

Vilify what you don’t know or understand.

I wonder about the demons/skeletons in their closet.

Today, HRC and Freedom Oklahoma, the state organization working to advance equality for LGBT Oklahomans, strongly condemned the introduction of a new anti-transgender bill in the Oklahoma State Legislature. The outrageous proposal would force schools to make accommodations for students who purport to have religious objections to sharing a sex-segregated space with transgender students. Going a step further, the legislation also strangely states that allowing students with religious objections to use a single-user facility is not an acceptable accommodation.

“To be clear, transgender young people are the ones being targeted. Legislators should be working to find solutions that ensure that they are safe and treated equally by their school, not stigmatized by the people elected to protect them,” said HRC Communications Director Jay Brown.

“Like so many of the anti-transgender bills we’re seeing, this is a solution in search of a problem that does not exist. School districts across this country have had policies in place for more than a decade with no safety problems at all. This does nothing more than demean transgender students and undermine their dignity.

If passed, Governor Fallin must veto this bill, which gambles with the lives and safety of young people.”

Despite claims to the contrary by anti-LGBT activists who have preyed on misinformation and ignorance, states with laws protecting transgender people’s access to public accommodations, including restrooms that accord with their gender identity, have seen no increase in public safety incidents.

Cities and states throughout the country have rejected similar attacks on the transgender community.

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard vetoed legislation that limited restroom use for transgender children in public schools earlier this year, and the sponsor of a similar bill in Tennessee recently pulled the legislation from consideration. Additionally, after immense backlash, the City Council of Oxford, Ala. rescinded an anti-transgender ordinance that imposed jail time and a fine on violators of the law.

At the end of this day, after Alabama started performing their first same-sex marriages, it’s time to reflect and wonder if the time for national marriage equality has arrived. 

I so hope that this is the case.

In the United States, same-sex marriage is recognized by the federal government and has been legalized in 37 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and 21 Native American tribal jurisdictions. More than 70% of the population live in jurisdictions where same-sex couples can legally marry.

In 35 of the states with legalized same-sex marriage, marriage is open to same-sex couples statewide; in three it is restricted. Missouri recognizes same-sex marriages from out-of-state and same-sex marriages licensed by the City of St. Louis under a state court order, though two other jurisdictions issue such licenses as well. In Kansas, marriage licenses are available to same-sex couples in most counties, but the state does not recognize their validity. In Alabama, at least two probate judges are not issuing licenses uniformly. In two additional states, same-sex marriages were previously legal between the time their bans were struck down and then stayed. Michigan recognizes the validity of more than 300 marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples and those marriages. Arkansas does not recognize the more than 500 marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples there.

The United States Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether individual states may constitutionally ban or refuse to recognize same-sex marriages.
