ENDURING LEGACY

It is so comforting to hear this voice associated to the topic that President Obama is speaking about.

The tone, the sense of protection, the equanimity, the strength.

All that we need to go on. 

We must stand tall.

There’s no going back.

We will do so to honor those who came before us, for our generation and for the younger generation coming up.

Millions around the world took part in parades and marches in honor of National LGBTQ Pride Month, but these celebrations may not have been possible if not for a group of LGBTQ activists who 48 years ago stood up in a local New York bar and fought back against hate.

On June 28, 1969, when New York City police began again harassing LGBTQ patrons of the Stonewall Inn simply for congregating, those patrons decided they’d had enough. They began bravely fighting back against the consistent oppression and brutal intimidation they faced. From those early demonstrations grew a modern social movement determined to rid the nation of discrimination against all LGBTQ Americans.

Exactly one year later, the first Pride marches took place in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles to commemorate the anniversary of the historic stand against injustice at Stonewall.

The significance of the events at Stonewall, and their influence in shaping the national conversation surrounding LGBTQ equality in America, cannot be overstated. Last summer, then-President Obama acknowledged the historic contributions of the events of 1969 by designating the Stonewall Inn as the country’s first LGBTQ national monument, a place essential to telling the story of the LGBTQ community’s struggle for equality.

“We can’t rest, we gotta keep pushing for equality and acceptance and tolerance, but the arc of our history is clear,” said Obama.

“It’s an arc of progress and a lot of that progress can be traced back to Stonewall.”

The LGBTQ community hailed Obama’s announcement, which recognized what many consider the birthplace of the LGBTQ movement, providing a public acknowledgement of Stonewall’s much-deserved place in history.

I was a teenager at this time.

I was barely 18 going on 19.

I wasn’t sure about my sexuality yet I knew I was different. I was living in Puerto Rico and cut away from these happenings in New York.

With time, I have come to learn about the importance of this uprising and I honor those who came before me and cleared the way that allowed me to accept and cherish my sexuality and live a fulfilling life, the way I am …

The Stonewall Riots (also referred to as the Stonewall Uprising or the Stonewall Rebellion) were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay (LGBT) community against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

They are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States.

ONE YEAR AGO TODAY

Tragedy struck in the early hours of the night

It was a night of fun and celebration at a Latin even at Pulse, a local LGBTQ night club in Orlando.

Most victims were Latino and Hispanic.

It was Pulse’s Latin Night. 

It was a horrible situation. It was a huge hit for the Latino and Hispanic communities. It was reported that 90% of the victims were Latino/Hispanic with 23 of the victims from Puerto Rico.

The transgender community, (the “T” in LGBT), hasn’t had an easy existence

There was plenty of hope during the recent years when rights for the LGBT community were recognized as basic human rights, including transgender rights.

However, the Drumpf administration has taken it upon themselves to start the dismantling of these human rights.

From Melanie Nathan, a blogger I follow  …. “Today, February 22, that transphobic homophobe the putrid Trump AG, Jeff Sessions, did exactly what we thought he would do the moment he assumed office – AND so hand in hand with that other homophobe and transphobic piece of work Pence – as well as an apparently forced Betsy DeVos Of the Department of Education – announced that Title IX will no longer be enforced to protect transgender students equally in all school facilities, including restrooms.

Title IX guaranteed students the right to a safe and supportive learning environment regardless of gender and protects them from discrimination.
There is no reasonable basis for them to do this except spite and hate of a community that deserves protection and recognition.”
So disgusted!!

I think this is the beginning.

Like the #MuslimBan, the LGBT community is in the cross-hairs now.

Who is Gavin Grimm — and why does Hollywood’s most high-profile transgender actress want you to learn about him?

Grimm is a 17-year-old high school senior in Virginia whose fight against the local school board will be argued at the Supreme Court on March 28. The transgender boy’s long road to the highest court in the country started at age 15, when he was forced to endure a series of school board meetings at which adults debated whether or not he should be allowed to use the boys bathroom at school.

ACLU attorney Josh Block told NBC News that Grimm’s case has taken on a new significance with President Trump now overseeing federal agencies like the Department of Education.

For the last 20 years the overwhelming majority of lower courts have been holding that out civil rights laws against sex discrimination protect transgender people,” said Block. “Gavin’s case is the first time the Supreme Court will consider the question and reaffirm that transgender people are protected. With a presidential new administration, these protections are more critical than ever.”

But the case, “Gloucester County School Board v. G.G.,” stands to impact every transgender teen and child in the nation: the Supreme Court will use it to decide whether Title IX protections on the basis of sex can be interpreted to include gender identity, and whether Obama-era guidance from the Department of Education can be considered the law of the land.

Meryl Streep Responds to Drumpf Calling Her “Over-rated”

Meryl Streep likes to load her dishwasher. She likes to sit quietly and read. She likes to garden. Most of all, as she told the audience at the Human Rights Campaign Greater New York Gala on Saturday night, February 11, she likes to “stay the fuck home.”

But the actress, who, along with late-night host Seth Meyers, was the recipient of the HRC Ally for Equality Award, left the house to stand in support of her LGBTQ friends in the Drumpf era.

She said all of this during her speech without even mentioning the president’s name.

The legendary actress, who previously delivered a fiery take-down of Drumpf at the Golden Globes (also without saying his name), told attendees at the HRC gala that in the end, the current administration could serve as a valuable wake-up call.

“If we live through this precarious moment . . . if his catastrophic instinct to retaliate doesn’t lead us to nuclear winter, we have much to thank this president for, because he will have woken us up to how fragile freedom really is,”

she said to the crowd gathered at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

Streep experienced Drumpf’s famously thin skin after her Globes oration in January when he tweeted that the actress was “over-rated.”

The actress and honoree also had a response for Drumpf’s claim.

“Yes, I am the most overrated, over-decorated, and currently, over-berated actress . . . of my generation,” she joked.

“But that is why you invited me here! Right?”

In honor of President Barack Obama’s final day in office, Ellen DeGeneres took a moment out of Thursday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show, January 19, to pay tribute to him and First Lady Michelle Obama.

“I want to personally thank him for changing my life,” said DeGeneres. “I am a legally married woman because of him, and so is my wife.”

She continued: “His courage and compassion created equality for everyone. He moved us forward and made more happen in the past eight years than I ever dreamed possible. I love him. I love Michelle.”

Then, DeGeneres showed a video compilation of her time with the Obamas over the years. The touching send-off featured everything from Barack’s first appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2007 to Barack honoring DeGeneres with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November.

I woke up this morning with a sense of dread.

I realized the date!

It’s been ‘only’ six months ago, yet it feels like an eternity.

Since then, life has changed in plenty ways for many of us.

Life ended for 49 human beings that fatal night.

Let us not ever forget!

On June 12, 2016, a 29-year-old security guard, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in a terrorist attack/hate crime inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, United States. He was shot and killed by Orlando Police Department (OPD) officers after a three-hour standoff.

Pulse was hosting Latin Night and most of the victims were Latino.

It was both the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter and the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in United States history. It was also the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since the September 11 attacks in 2001.
