11-Yr-Old Kaylee Johnson has gained legions of fans since her recent appearance on “Little Big Shots,” when famous a cappella group Pentatonix joined her in singing a rousing rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

But what many fans don’t realize is that the little girl was diagnosed at an early age with mild autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. According to her teachers, Kaylee rarely spoke, much less sang, until just recently.

But that all changed last year, not long before she shot to viral fame with a Christmas-themed remake of “Hallelujah” with her choir at Killard House Special School in Northern Ireland.

INSPIRING STORY

With the year’s passing of beloved musician and composer Leonard Cohen, it only seems fitting that his timeless song “Hallelujah” should be going viral once again.

At the Killard House School’s choir concert in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, young Kaylee Rodgers sang a stunning version of Cohen’s most classic tune with modified lyrics. Kaylee’s voice is soaring and rich, but it’s her story that is perhaps most uplifting.

Kaylee happens to have autism and ADHD, and because she was so shy at school, she had a hard time participating in class.

The principal of Killard House, Colin Millar, explains that she

“wouldn’t really read out in class … so to stand and perform in front of an audience is amazing …

It takes a lot of effort on Kaylee’s part.”

Kaylee’s music teacher, Lloyd Scates, played a large role in helping her find the confidence to sing.

Her mother divulged that “she always loved singing, but it wasn’t until she started at Killard House School that she really came into her own. Mr. Scates is like her safety blanket – he’s amazing.”

As I researched about it to post today, I realized that this event took place 13 years ago.

We see that our world reality hasn’t changed since then.

If anything, it’s gotten worse.

Playing for Change is a multimedia music project, created by the American producer and sound engineer Mark Johnson with his Timeless Media Group, that seeks to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. Playing For Change also created a separate non-profit organization called the Playing For Change Foundation, which builds music schools for children around the world.

Playing For Change was born in 2002 as a shared vision between co-founders, Mark Johnson and Whitney Kroenke, to hit the streets of America with a mobile recording studio and cameras in search of inspiration and the heartbeat of the people. Producers Mark Johnson and Enzo Buono, traveled around the world to places including New Orleans, Barcelona, South Africa, India, Nepal, the Middle East and Ireland.

Using mobile recording equipment, the duo recorded local musicians performing the same song, interpreted in their own style. Among the artists participating or openly involved in the project are Vusi Mahlasela, Louis Mhlanga, Clarence Bekker, David Guido Pietroni, Tal Ben Ari (Tula), Bono, Keb’ Mo’, David Broza, Manu Chao, Grandpa Elliott, Keith Richards, Toots Hibbert from Toots & the Maytals, Taj Mahal, Stephen Marley.

This musical journey resulted in the award-winning documentary, “A Cinematic Discovery of Street Musicians.”

Music is one the greatest mechanisms for soothing the soul of a restless man. This life may be confusing at times. We are taught to love by the people who teach us to hate. We are taught to believe in what we are told, except for when we are not supposed to believe in what we are told.

Nineteen countries have approved the freedom to marry for same-sex couples nationwide (Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Argentina, Denmark, France, Brazil, Uruguay, New Zealand, Britain, Luxembourg, Finland and Ireland), while two others have regional or court-directed provisions enabling same-sex couples to share in the freedom to marry (Mexico and the United States).

In Slovenia, Parliament approved a marriage bill in March 2015 and is headed to the president’s desk. Many other countries provide some protections for such couples. As more and more countries and parts of the United States win the freedom to marry, we see that families are helped, and communities and countries made stronger, by protecting all loving committed couples.

BREAKING: Historic Victory for Marriage Equality in Ireland

Today, May 23, 2015, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, hailed the historic victory for marriage equality in Ireland.

Ireland is the first country in the world to pass marriage equality through a national referendum, and the 21st country to decide to afford same-sex couples full marriage rights.  

“Voters in Ireland had a rare opportunity to make their country and the world more just and more equal — and that’s just what they did,” said HRC President Chad Griffin.

“As these election results prove, momentum for equality reaches around the globe. HRC is proud to join our partners in Ireland in celebrating this historic victory which guarantees that everyone has the same right to marry the person they love.

Love can’t wait, not in the United States or in Ireland, and it is clear it won’t wait any longer.”

The referendum asked voters to approve language that updates Ireland’s constitution to state, “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with the law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.” Through an unprecedented voter registration campaign and voter mobilization effort by the Irish LGBT community, including the Yes Equality campaign, voters voted overwhelming for equality.

Voters in the Republic of Ireland are taking part in a referendum on legalizing same-sex marriage on Friday, May 22, 2015.

More than 3.2 million people are being asked whether they want to amend the country’s constitution to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

Polling stations opened at 07:00 British Standard Time with voting continuing until 22:00 British Standard Time and counting due to start on Saturday morning.
In 2010, the government enacted civil partnership legislation, which provided legal recognition for gay couples.

Google Doodle: St Patrick’s day marked with shamrocks playing fiddles

GOOGLE DOODLE

The fiddle-wielding shamrocks on the Google homepage are a reminder for those not already stationed at the pub with a glass of Guinness at their elbow – it’s St Patrick’s Day.

Named for the patron saint of Ireland who gaveth Christianity and tooketh away snakes, 17 March is a public holiday in Ireland but celebrated outside of work hours in the rest of the world, often with Guinness.

The Irish artist Eamonn O’Neill designed the animation after Google Doodle head Ryan Germick asked him to submit an idea about two weeks ago. He pitched four “simple” ideas, of which an animation of shamrocks playing traditional Irish instruments was chosen.

The Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology graduate told the Irish Times that it was the first time an Irish national had been asked to commemorate the holiday.

Why Google has given the shortest day of the year a doodle?

Google has marked the shortest day of the year with an animated Doodle on its homepage.
The Doodle depicts a cartoon Father Christmas helping two children to build a snowman before the children’s mother appears and produces a carrot from her shopping bag to use as the snowman’s nose.

The winter solstice occurs when the sun’s daily maximum elevation in the sky is at its lowest and the North Pole is tilted furthest away from the sun. This results in the least number of daylight hours and the longest night of the year. This astronomical phenomenon occurs in December in the Northern Hemisphere and in June in the Southern Hemisphere.

The event has been marked by many cultures throughout history with festivals, rituals, celebrations and the mating of animals, and even today people gather at Stonehenge to watch the sunrise and sunset. The ancient stones are carefully aligned on a sight-line that points to the winter solstice sunset, and it is thought that this event was actually more important to those who constructed the site than the summer equivalent.

Playing for Change is a multimedia music project, created by the American producer and sound engineer Mark Johnson with his Timeless Media Group, that seeks to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. Playing For Change also created a separate non-profit organization called the Playing For Change Foundation, which builds music schools for children around the world.

~~Origin~~

Playing For Change was born in 2002 as a shared vision between co-founders, Mark Johnson and Whitney Kroenke, to hit the streets of America with a mobile recording studio and cameras in search of inspiration and the heartbeat of the people. Producers Mark Johnson and Enzo Buono, traveled around the world to places including New Orleans, Barcelona, South Africa, India, Nepal, the Middle East and Ireland.

Using mobile recording equipment, the duo recorded local musicians performing the same song, interpreted in their own style. Among the artists participating or openly involved in the project are Vusi Mahlasela, Louis Mhlanga, Clarence Bekker, Tal Ben Ari (Tula), Bono, Keb’ Mo’, David Broza, Manu Chao and Grandpa Elliott. This musical journey resulted in the award-winning documentary, “A Cinematic Discovery of Street Musicians.”

“La Bamba” is a Mexican folk song, originally from the state of Veracruz, best known from a 1958 adaptation by Ritchie Valens, a top 40 hit in the U.S. charts and one of early rock and roll’s best-known songs. Valens’ version of “La Bamba” is ranked number 354 on Rolling Stone magazine′s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and is the only song on the list sung in a language other than English.

“La Bamba” has been covered by numerous artists, most notably by Los Lobos, whose version was the title track of the 1987 film La Bamba and reached #1 in the U.S. and UK singles charts in the same year. The music video for Los Lobos’ version, directed by Sherman Halsey, won the 1988 MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film.

Los Angeles – July 16th, 2014 – Playing For Change premieres “La Bamba” video featuring David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, Andres Calamaro and musicians across the world on Relix.com.

“La Bamba” is off the latest album Playing For Change 3 “Songs Around The World” which was released on June 17th, 2014. The CD/DVD is available both digitally and physically at all major retailers and via Starbucks in North America, and includes performances from Keith Richards, Sara Bareilles, Andres Calamaro, Toots Hibbert from Toots & The Maytals, Los Lobos, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Keb Mo, and Taj Mahal in addition to a song produced by Jackson Browne. Album is now available on iTunes.

La Bamba, off of our new release PFC3: Songs Around The World – available everywhere now! This CD/DVD set highlights the passion and talent of 185 musicians from 31 different countries.

We started this recording on a back porch in East Los Angeles with members of Los Lobos, and then returned to the roots of the song in Veracruz, Mexico. As we traveled, musicians everywhere mixed the traditional and rock ‘n’ roll styles of “La Bamba” into a new Song Around The World.
