Kate McKinnon Spoofs Justin Bieber’s Calvin Klein Ads on ‘Saturday Night Live’
Kate McKinnon took a swipe at Justin Bieber‘s new Calvin Klein campaign on the latest “Saturday Night Live.” The comedienne has received rave reviews for her spoof of the singer in the past, and she took it to a whole new level, mocking not only his CK jeans commercial, but also his CK underwear print campaign in three separate commercial parodies.
In the ads, McKinnon’s Bieber touts how grown up he is by admitting that he drinks, talking about how painful it is to get tattoos, and rubbing all over Cecily Strong, portraying model Lara Stone from the original Bieber ad.
Back to the video: it may be surprising how well this song translated into the New Orleans style.
Where the original song is a bit more somber in tone, this one is triumphant. It’s for anyone that’s ever needed to find the strength to move on, and wants to feel good doing it. Making this arrangement was especially fun for me, since the New Orleans sound is what drew me to jazz in the first place, and Sara’s bluesy voice is a perfect fit for the style.
With every video, she proves why she’s one of the great young vocalists of our times. It’s always a party when Lemar Guillary busts out the sousaphone, too.
The incredible Sara Niemietz joins us as we take Justin Bieber’s new hit, “Love Yourself,” way back in time to show how it would have sounded in 1920’s New Orleans. Oh yeah, and 2:15 happened …
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane (born September 29, 1994), known by her stage name Halsey, is an American singer and songwriter. She started songwriting at the age of 17. In 2014, she signed her first recording contract with Astralwerks and released her debut EP, titled Room 93. Her debut studio album, Badlands, was released in 2015.
Halsey was born and raised in New Jersey as Ashley Frangipane.
She is of Italian, Hungarian, and Irish descent on her mother’s side and African American on her father’s side. Growing up, Halsey played the violin, viola, and cello until moving onto the acoustic guitar when she was 14.
In one of her first interviews, Halsey stated she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder around the age of 16 or 17. When she was 18, Halsey encountered financial trouble and music became a way to pay her rent. She played numerous acoustic shows in different cities under various stage names.
She chose “Halsey” as her moniker because it is an anagram of her real name as well as a street in Brooklyn where she spent a lot of time as a teenager.
Halsey Covered “Love Yourself,” Swapped “Love” for the Word Bieber Actually Meant
By Laura Bradley
Don’t be deceived by the seemingly sweet and affirming title of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself”: the “love” has a very clear, not-so-sweet double entendre.
Now Halsey, the artist who lent her vocal talents on another Purpose track, “The Feeling,” has covered the song, with a few virtuosic flourishes.
Most notably, her chorus is a little more direct:
She went with “Fuck yourself.”
The cover has a gentle, smoky timbre, which makes the lyric change stand out even more. Halsey’s lyrics generally tend to be graphic and direct. And for those of us who have always thought “love yourself” sounds like a lame radio edit of what Bieber probably meant to say, this amendment was long overdue.
Halsey channels her inner-belieber in the Like A Version studio and covers Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’.
Like A Version is a segment on Australian radio station triple j. Every Friday morning a musician or band comes into the studio to play one of their own songs and a cover of a song they love.
SiriusXM premiers Karen Rodriguez’s brand new cover of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself,” entitled “Quiérete a Tí”.
Rodriguez tells SiriusXM,
“When I first heard ‘Love Yourself,’ it instantly became one of my favorite Justin Bieber songs – I loved the story he told!
Coincidentally, many of my Instagram followers requested that I cover it. After my Spanglish cover of “Hello,” my fans demanded full Spanish covers, so I began translating!
I realized how beautiful it would sound completely in Spanish, and knew my fans would love it. The songs original melody and structure is completely intact, but I changed the narrators perspective to my own and tell my own story.”
The video for “Quiérete a Tí” was recorded at SiriusXM Studios in New York. In an exclusive interview with Vivia, SiriusXM channel 763, the American Idol finalist talks about the phenomenon that has been her Spanish interpretation of “Hello” by Adele – which has more than 8 million views on YouTube – and what it’s like composing with the King of Bachata, Romeo Santos.
Hoy me despido, ve y quiérete a ti
Y si en verdad te vez mejor sin mi
Pues buena suerte, ve y quiérete a ti
Tú me decías que mi amiga no era fiel
Mis opiniones no querías saber
Hoy me despido, ve y quiérete a ti
Y si en verdad te vez mejor sin mi
Pues buena suerte, ve y quiérete a ti
Por cada vez me hiciste llorar
Y me llenaste de inseguridad
Fui vulnerable no me supe valorar
Pero tu amor me enseño a amarme más
Si la felicidad, nunca te di
Hoy me despido, ve y quiérete a ti
Y si en verdad te vez mejor sin mi
Pues buena suerte, ve y quiérete a ti
Cause if you like, the way you look that much
Then baby you should go and love yourself
And if think, that I’m still holding on
To something, you should go and love yourself
Oh baby, you should go and love yourself
Pues buena suerte, ve y quiérete a ti
“Love Yourself” is a song recorded by Canadian singer Justin Bieber for his fourth studio album Purpose (2015).
The song was written by Bieber, Ed Sheeran and Benjamin Levin, while production of the song was provided by Levin.
A promotional video was released on YouTube on November 14, 2015.
The video features Filipino husband and wife dancers Keone and Mari Madrid dancing their way through their house. They are later seen dancing on their phone screens. The video ends when the wife wakes up and finds a note on her husband’s pillow saying, “Love Yourself”.
“Love Yourself” tells the tale of a woman who’s clearly wronged Bieber by using his name to up her own profile, thinking too highly of herself and breaking his heart.
These are serious accusations, and one Bieber didn’t really even want to write about, lest anyone think he actually still cares about the girl it’s about, but sometimes it’s best to sing it out, I suppose.
