‘Slavery in America’ …. “🤨 Didn’t End after the Civil War …. A New Form of Enslavement …. Still Permeates the American Psyche 🤨 …. “!!

SLAVERY ISN’T A CHOICE

It could never be!

Recently an American in the music sphere stated that ‘slavery is a choice’.

Interesting to note, he’s an African American himself.

The current political, social and cultural climate in America is such that it lends itself to this type of thinking. The mask is off. Racism, white supremacy, dominance, distortion of facts, ignorance of history or plain shameless self-serving.

You pick the reason!

I find it so difficult to wrap my mind around this type of thinking. I can’t fathom how this happens.

“When you hear about slavery for 400 years … for 400 years?

That sounds like a choice. You were there for 400 years and it’s all of y’all.

It’s like we’re mentally imprisoned.”

SlaveHands

Slavery might have ended on paper after the Civil War, but many white landowners did everything they could to exploit newly freed slaves well into the 20th century.

Thousands of black laborers across the South were forced to work against their will as late as the 1960s – a new form of enslavement that went on in the shadows of rural America.

On this episode of DAILY VICE, we traveled to Louisiana to meet genealogist Antoinette Harrell, the “slavery detective of the South,” who tracks down cases of modern-day slavery and abusive labor practices.

They talk to a man whose family was held on a plantation against their will into the 1950’s and Antoinette explains how she uses decades-old records to uncover how slavery was perpetuated long after the Civil War ended.

THE ODD COUPLE

Donald’s Beautiful Dark Fascist Fantasy

By Katy Waldman

What do Trump and Kanye West have in common?

Totalitarian aesthetics and disconnection from reality

On Tuesday morning, December 13, Kanye West became the latest eminence to cross the marble floors of the Trump Tower lobby. He wore a black sweatshirt and a slender gold chain, and arrived with a small entourage.

“We’ve been friends for a long time,” Trump told reporters after their meeting while West stood silent and unsmiling at his side. “We discussed life,” he added.

West, pressed to say something – anything – about his conversation with the world’s most powerful man, shook his head.

“I just wanted to take a picture right now,” he mumbled.

Making a Choice …. Always Difficult …. More So Now”!!

OnlyOne

~~March 10, 2016~~

WE ALL KNOW THEM

Britney Spears, Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Caitlyn Jenner, Ted Cruz

It’s all in good fun … yet, there’s always truth in jest.

I found this meme surfing through my Facebook Timeline.

I kept looking at it and looking at it.

I couldn’t really decide which one.

To tell you the truth I still don’t know.

Some I wouldn’t even consider.

Others …. they rank almost at the same level.

Until someone posted the graph posted below in the tread.

Can you make a choice?

~LYRICS~

I think I’ve had enough
I might get a little drunk
I say what’s on my mind
I might do a little time
‘Cause all of my kindness
Is taken for weakness

Now I’m FourFiveSeconds from wildin’
And we got three more days ’til Friday
I’m just tryna make it back home by Monday mornin’
I swear I wish somebody would tell me
Ooh, that’s all I want

Woke up an optimist
Sun was shinin’, I’m positive
Then I heard you was talkin’ trash
Hold me back, I’m ’bout to spaz

I’m FourFiveSeconds from wildin’
And we got three more days ’til Friday
I’m tryna make it back home by Monday mornin’
I swear I wish somebody would tell me
Ooh, that’s all I want

And I know that you’re up tonight
Thinkin’, “How could I be so selfish?”
But you called ’bout a thousand times
Wondering where I’ve been
Now I know that you’re up tonight
Thinkin’ “How could I be so reckless?”
But I just can’t apologize
I hope you can understand

If I go to jail tonight
Promise you’ll pay my bail
See they want to buy my pride
But that just ain’t up for sale
See all of my kindness
Is taken for weakness

Now I’m FourFiveSeconds from wildin’
And we got three more days ’til Friday
I’m tryna make it back home by Monday mornin’
I swear I wish somebody would tell me
Ooh, that’s all I want

FourFiveSeconds from wildin’
And we got three more days ’til Friday
I’m just tryna make it back home by Monday mornin’
I swear I wish somebody would tell me
That’s all I want

“American Oxygen” …. new song by Rihanna!!

Ri4

~~April 17, 2015~~

Is Rihanna’s American Oxygen an anthem for Eric Garner?

I became aware of this new song thanks to a very dear blogger friend, from across the ocean. I don’t really follow Rihanna but it seems to me that maybe the time of songs addressing social issues (like in the 60’s) could be coming back.

Thank you Miss Kitty.

If Rihanna was looking to make a splash with her new single American Oxygen, she exceeded expectations by creating a tsunami of talk and controversy. Commenting on the idea of the American dream (or lack thereof), the song simultaneously serves as both a biting commentary and patriotic anthem, and is a wild departure from her previous single, Bitch Better Have My Money.

This track is from a more “serious” Rihanna – a Rihanna that has something to say. To prove it, the video for American Oxygen features quick clips of footage from the most emotional moments in US history.

Intercut with images of the American flag, you see film of the burning twin towers on September 11, Ku Klux Klan horsemen galloping past smoldering crosses, and even a glimpse of Martin Luther King Jr’s corpse laying in a coffin. Also in the mix, however, is footage of patriotic accomplishments as well – whether it’s space ships rocketing into the air or the flag raising over Iwo Jima.

Put them all together and it’s hard to tell exactly what Rihanna is trying to say – but maybe that’s the point.

~~PARTIAL LYRICS~~

Breathe out, breathe in
American oxygen
Every breath I breathe
Chasin’ this American Dream

We sweat for a nickel and a dime
Turn it into an empire
Breathe in, this feeling
American, American oxygen
American oxygen

This is the new America
We are the new America

The layered meaning of American Oxygen is largely thanks to its two creative masterminds, one of whom is Kanye West; a man who instead of running away from controversy has a penchant to speed unflinchingly towards it. The other is Alex da Kid, the multitalented producer and songwriter behind hits as varied as rock anthem Radioactive by Imagine Dragons and BoB’s 2009 smash Airplanes.

He also happens to be the force behind one of the biggest hits of Rihanna’s career, her No 1 hit Love the Way You Lie. Sam Harris from rock band X Ambassadors, South African songwriter Candice Pillay, and Rihanna herself also share songwriting credits.
