‘SHE WAS WARNED. SHE WAS GIVEN AN EXPLANATION. SHE PERSISTED’

He may have gotten what he wanted

Mitch McConnell got everything he wanted
“It’s a win: He appeased the GOP base by attacking a woman, and the odious Jeff Sessions is now our attorney general.”

~GARY LEGUM~

On Tuesday, February 7, night Mitch McConnell stood up in the Senate and within the space of a minute or so managed to enrage Democrats, women, civil rights activists, the ghost of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, you name it.

By invoking the rarely used Rule 19 of the Senate to stop Sen. Elizabeth Warren from reading into the official record a letter penned by the late Coretta Scott King in 1986, in opposition to a judicial nomination of Jeff Sessions, McConnell created an immediate firestorm and gave the left a new martyr.

The general consensus of writers and political observers was that the normally careful McConnell had made a rare misstep. Not only did he silence a popular liberal firebrand, but in a way he also silenced the widow of civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr.

With Warren facing surprisingly low approval ratings in Massachusetts, he may have just given her 2018 re-election and a possible presidential run in 2020 a high-profile boost.

He may have even coined a slogan for both campaigns:

“She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

Thoughts for today, #427 …. “Your Vote …. Puerto Rican Voting Power …. “!!

~~October 24, 2016~~

PUERTO RICAN DIASPORA

I’m a proud member of the Puerto Rican diaspora.

I recently learned about its existence and even the meaning of the word.

I have proudly exercised my right to vote and will proudly do it again within this week.

I’m very proud of my choices.

A diaspora (from Greek διασπορά, “scattering, dispersion”) is a scattered population whose origin lies within a smaller geographic locale. Diaspora can also refer to the movement of the population from its original homeland.

Puerto Ricans, either born in the island or in the states, are American citizens. At 9% of the Latino population in the United States, Puerto Ricans are the second largest Latino group nationwide, and comprise 1.5% of the entire population of the United States.

Although the 2010 Census counted the number of Puerto Ricans living in the United States at 4.6 million, more recent estimates show the Puerto Rican population to be over 5.1 million, as of 2016.

~Puerto Ricans in Florida could pick the next President~

The presidential election could come down to Florida’s rapidly growing population of residents from Puerto Rico, a reality that has set off a political gold rush in the Sunshine State.

The Puerto Rican population in Florida has exploded in recent years as a result of the island’s bankruptcy crisis, which has wreaked havoc on the territory’s economy. More than a million Puerto Ricans now live in Florida, a number that now rivals the state’s Cuban population, a group that has long dominated Latino political power in the state.

A majority of recent new residents are resettling in the counties along the “I-4 corridor,” named after a major highway stretching across a swath of Central Florida, which is known as a crucial swing region for elections.

This new batch of potentially undecided voters has sparked an aggressive effort on both sides of the political aisle to register them to vote and make a good impression.

‘DWTS’ Season 23: Laurie Hernández Dazzles, Earns Perfect Score in Week 4

In a special show last night, October 3, competitors on “Dancing With the Stars” performed routines that were all inspired by various Cirque du Soleil shows, and they were even joined on the ballroom floor by Cirque’s acrobats and other performers.

At the end of the night, Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernández topped and Val Chmerkovskiy the leaderboard with 30 points – earning not only the first 10s of the season but the season’s first perfect score.

~High Scorer~

The Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast channeled her inner Michael Jackson for a sassy jazz routine that electrified the ballroom audience and judges and earned her three 10’s for the first perfect score of the season.

During the judges’ critique Julianne Hough initially made amazed faces without speaking, then said:

“I literally have nothing to say other than the fact that Michael Jackson may be the king of pop but you are the queen of the ballroom!”

redlineb

La Borinqueña is an original character created by graphic novelist Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez which debuted at the 59th Annual National Puerto Rican Day Parade.

The first full-length issue is in production under Somos Arte.

La Borinqueña is a patriotic symbol presented in a classic superhero story.

Her powers are drawn from elements and mysticism found on the island of Puerto Rico. The fictional character, Marisol Rios De La Luz, is a Columbia University Earth and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate student living with her parents Flor De La Luz Rojas and Oscar ‘Chango’ Rios Velez in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

She takes a semester of study abroad in collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico.

There she explores the caves of Puerto Rico: Ventana, La Cueva del Indio, Las Cuevas de Camuy, La Cueva del Viento and the caves at the Julio Enrique Monagas National Park.

At each of these caves she finds five similar sized crystals.

Atabex, the Taino mother goddess, appears before Marisol once the crystals are united and summons her sons Yúcahu and Juracan.

Yúcahu, God of the seas and the mountains gives Marisol her superhuman strength.

Juracan, god of the hurricanes gives her the power of flight and control of the wind.

La Borinqueña #1 will debut December 17 and 18, 2016 at the Comic Fest (Aguada Con) 2016 in Puerto Rico.

GRITO DE LARES

(The Lares Cry)

148 years ago today was El Grito de Lares

The smaller star on La Borinqueña’s costume is inspired by the Lares flag .

The Grito de Lares (English: Cry of Lares) – also referred to as the Lares uprising, the Lares revolt, the Lares rebellion, or as the Lares revolution – was the first major revolt against Spanish rule in Puerto Rico.

The short-lived revolt was planned by Ramón Emeterio Betances and Segundo Ruiz Belvis.

It began on September 23, 1868 in the town of Lares, for which it is named, and spread rapidly to various revolutionary cells throughout the island.

DANCING WITH THE STARS SEASON 23

I really wasn’t going to watch this time.

There are several reasons.

However, when I found out Laurie Hernandez was one of the competitors, I had to give in.

I don’t want to jinx her chances but when I saw her first time out,

I think we have a winner.

Here’s hoping.

Enjoy!

A Puerto Rican Moment …. “It Happens …. “The Young Lords …. Chicago …. “!!

THE YOUNG LORDS

Many real life Puerto Rican heroes like the Young Lords Party fought for social justice and inspired Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez to create La Borinqueña.

redlineb

The Young Lords began as a Puerto Rican turf gang in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago in the fall of 1960 and as a civil and human rights movement on Grito de Lares, September 23, 1868.

During Mayor Daley’s tenure, Puerto Ricans in Lincoln Park (the first hub of Puerto Ricans in Chicago) and several Mexican communities were completely evicted from areas near the Loop, lakefront, Old Town, Lakeview and Lincoln Park, in order to increase property tax revenues.

When they realized that urban renewal was evicting their families from their barrios and witnessed police abuses, some Puerto Ricans became involved in the June 1966 Division Street Riots in Wicker Park and Humboldt Park.

They were officially reorganized from the gang into a civil and human rights movement by Jose Cha Cha Jimenez, who was the last president of the former gang and became the founder of the new Young Lords Movement.

Puerto Rican self-determination and the displacement of Puerto Ricans and poor residents from prime real estate areas for profit became the primary focus of the original movement. Since there were few Latino students and no outspoken leadership at the time, the former street-gang transformed themselves, training leadership and organizing the broad community.
