11-Yr-Old Kaylee Johnson has gained legions of fans since her recent appearance on “Little Big Shots,” when famous a cappella group Pentatonix joined her in singing a rousing rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

But what many fans don’t realize is that the little girl was diagnosed at an early age with mild autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. According to her teachers, Kaylee rarely spoke, much less sang, until just recently.

But that all changed last year, not long before she shot to viral fame with a Christmas-themed remake of “Hallelujah” with her choir at Killard House Special School in Northern Ireland.

Sing is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical comedy film produced by Illumination Entertainment.

It was directed and written by Garth Jennings and co-directed by Christophe Lourdelet.

INSPIRING STORY

With the year’s passing of beloved musician and composer Leonard Cohen, it only seems fitting that his timeless song “Hallelujah” should be going viral once again.

At the Killard House School’s choir concert in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, young Kaylee Rodgers sang a stunning version of Cohen’s most classic tune with modified lyrics. Kaylee’s voice is soaring and rich, but it’s her story that is perhaps most uplifting.

Kaylee happens to have autism and ADHD, and because she was so shy at school, she had a hard time participating in class.

The principal of Killard House, Colin Millar, explains that she

“wouldn’t really read out in class … so to stand and perform in front of an audience is amazing …

It takes a lot of effort on Kaylee’s part.”

Kaylee’s music teacher, Lloyd Scates, played a large role in helping her find the confidence to sing.

Her mother divulged that “she always loved singing, but it wasn’t until she started at Killard House School that she really came into her own. Mr. Scates is like her safety blanket – he’s amazing.”

André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu (born 1 October 1949) is a Dutch violinist and conductor best known for creating the waltz-playing Johann Strauss Orchestra.

Together they have turned classical and waltz music into a worldwide concert touring act, as successful as some of the biggest global pop and rock music acts.

Rob Landes is an award-winning violinist who started playing the violin at 3 years in Orem, Utah. Born to a large musical family, Rob gave his first solo recital at 10 years old, performed in the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on the Disney Channel with the Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, and founded a piano trio that performed actively throughout his teenage years.

Rob has won first prize at numerous music competitions and has soloed with the Utah Symphony, Utah Valley Symphony, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, BYU Philharmonic, and BYU Chamber Orchestra. As a first violinist of the BYU Chamber Orchestra, Rob performed in more than twenty cities throughout central and southern Europe, and as concertmaster of the orchestra, gave a concert to a sold-out audience in New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Rob was awarded full scholarships to attend Brigham Young University and Rice University where he earned a Bachelor’s in Music and Master’s in Music, respectively. While studying at Rice, Rob began covering rock and pop music, and upon returning to Salt Lake City after graduation, bought a looper pedal and an amp which he uses to create intricate and stunning arrangements of today and yesterday’s most popular music.

Thank you to Aubry Pitcher for playing piano in this piece!

She is an incredible pianist and friend.

COHEN’S HALLELUJAH.

I’ve heard this song before.

Events have come together these past days that have brought it to my mind’s forefront.

I’ll never hear it again without the associated memory of Kate McKinnon playing it on Saturday Night Live as the somber way to end the skits about Hillary Clinton’s run for the presidency.

Here you have a cover by Pentatonix.

Angelika, my oldest grand-daughter, made me aware of this cover today.

Nothing about Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” – the original version of the song Cohen recorded for his 1984 album “Various Positions” – leads you to conclude that it would go on to become one of pop music’s most durable compositions.

Not the rinky-dink keyboard tone. Not the singer’s low, dry croak. And certainly not the lyric full of stark biblical imagery.

Yet in the years leading up to Cohen’s death this week at age 82, “Hallelujah” attained the kind of pop-cultural saturation we more commonly associate with songs by the likes of Justin Timberlake, to name one star who quickly mourned Cohen’s passing on social media.

A cappella group Pentatonix has dropped the music video for its powerful cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” which is featured on the vocal quintet’s new album, A Pentatonix Christmas.

Pentatonix chooses a subtle desert scene for the moving delivery of “Hallelujah.” The song is one of 11 tracks on the group’s latest LP, which was released on October 21.

After a world-historical terrible week like this one, how do you open a comedy show? Saturday Night Live opted for something spare and moving, putting Kate McKinnon on stage alone with a piano to perform a stripped-down version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” in full Hillary Clinton garb.

Singing the best-known song by the just-deceased singer-songwriter while dressed as the just-defeated presidential candidate sounds like a little much – and it is! – but it sort of works, not least because Cohen’s last verse, with lines like “I told the truth, I didn’t come to fool ya,” are surprisingly on-point.
McKinnon followed the song by looking at the camera, teary-eyed, and saying,

“I’m not giving up, and neither should you.”
